Review of Savage (Daughters of the Jaguar) by Willow Rose

Savage (Daughters of the Jaguar #1)Savage by Willow Rose
Douglas's rating  4 of 5 stars

Author: Willow Rose
Source: Author Requested Review
Genre: Paranormal Romance (Shifter)
Format: E-Book; Novel Length

After finishing Savage (Daughters of the Jaguar) I had to sit back and kind of soak in what I had read. This is Paranormal Romance by genre but it was actually something a bit more as it tends towards trying to impart the author’s sense of morality to the reader in a very general sense. Let me be clear, if I feel an author has decided to get on their soapbox and tell me how to live/vote/make a “better” world in a book I read for entertainment, I usually follow that with a trip to the trash can. I read this genre for entertainment not enlightenment, with that said this book did it subtly enough for me to overlook most of it and enjoy the story.

Christian is a recent arrival in the USA from Denmark; he is brilliant and shallow at the same time. His life, in addition to his academic prowess due to a photographic memory, has been a tale of women attracted to his good looks and cast aside due to his lack of ability to feel much on an emotional level due to facts that the book will provide. The book starts slowly, giving background and making you wonder if this book was accidentally placed in the wrong genre because it is pretty much story of a medical student going to live/work in Florida on the charity of others. Then things change after a near death experience followed closely by meeting the “crazy” people next door and finds them to be much more than anyone suspects (no I am not going to tell you, read the book). The title should give you enough hints but you should NOT expect the usual paranormal boy meets girl story, to quote some of my Alabama relatives “this ain’t it”. This starts down a road of romance combined with urban fantasy that you think you know where it is going and you will be wrong, I can safely say that this story kept surprising me in the directions it would take off in that you could not see coming. The story revolves around a myriad of things not the least of which are Christian trying to get a medical degree, not getting shipped back to Denmark, getting the girl (or not), trying to figure out why a wild animal saved him (yes that is a teaser), supernatural gift he has no idea how to embrace, and in what could have been left out IMHO a bit of what I would describe as “the Meaning of Life mixed with World Peace). Fortunately that last bit was subdued enough for me to enjoy the story.

Readers should be aware that for the most part this novel is character driven rather than action packed (although there is enough of that to keep my interest) and the romance though heartfelt is somewhat low-key and rates probably closer to PG than R in that respect.

BOTTOM LINE: While a bit slower than I prefer it held my interest, the editing in the first 25% needed some help but whether it got better or I got wrapped up in the story and blew right through it I could not say (I think that is a good thing either way) . Christian embracing his gift a bit more would have helped the book, some better follow-through on a side story or two would have helped, I got the feeling the author was less interested in telling the story than her desire to enlighten me (no I DON’T like that). Finally, the ending was no ending at all, it was like she just stopped writing and I assume there will be more books in this series which will answer a few questions. The premise and characters in this story have a huge potential that was not realized in this first book, but which do get its hooks into you enough to make you want more, I shall look forward to the next book. Overall rating – 3.5/5 Stars – Maybe more if you are a starry eyed dreamer that is striving for “The Meaning of Life” but for those common folks like me who are selfish and just want a good story with a bit of action and romance, 3.5 is as good as it got.

Imaginary Worlds—What’s Not to Like?

I write fantasy and paranormal romances. Both are popular genres and have dedicated fan bases. Readers are always clamoring for another chance to step inside a vampire’s castle or be whisked away in the magical arms of a wizard. And in every story, there is a unique world to be explored that explains why these romances are so well-loved.

Step outside reality and enter a place where the night is magical. Yes, dark creatures exist in those dangerous forests but so do vampires who will do anything to protect the woman they love, shapeshifters who unite with their mate for life, and werewolves that save mere mortals from certain death.

Imagine living in a world where anything is possible because everything is fantasy. You could see two moons on the same night or feel the universe surround you as you’re lifted off the ground in the arms of your vampire. You could watch plants grow and surround you as you walk, hear a bird actually call your name, and feel the ripples of the water as you glide across a lake that wasn’t there moments before.

And forget about the everyday boredom of commutes, time clocks, and grocery shopping.
In these worlds, you can explore with confidence, knowing you’re going to find something unique.

There is no doubt in my mind that, in spite of the dangers, I’d choose a fantasy world any day. Where else would you find the undead sexy or the glowing eyes of your wolf comforting? Certainly not in the real world.

Virtual blog tour of The Wicked series by Calina B. + Giveaway

Paranormal Lovers from the Wicked Series by Calinda B
Most guys think they are pretty good in bed and the characters from the Wicked Series are no exception. When they entered the paranormal, however, they discovered techniques and sensitiveness inside of them that they found both amazing and bewildering to comprehend.  Let me tell you a bit of what they discovered.
Cameron Delaney Tyson, one of the main characters in the Wicked Series, is an Earth guy. A blond, 6’1” muscular man, he lives for climbing rock walls or shooting down the rapids in his kayak. If it has to do with Earth and adventure, sign him up. Earth guys don’t do paranormal, though. He’ll be the first to tell you. He freaked when his girlfriend started to glow like a frigging Christmas tree, all lit to Sunday. He learned to deal, however – he had to. He loved her too much to let her go. But when a cat-like creature from another galaxy known as a star dreamling started stalking him in A Wicked Beginning? That put him over the top.
But now he finds that he kind of likes the effect the star dreamling has on him. For one thing, he can keep up with his Galaxy Dancing lover, finally. He’ll tell you – it really unmanned him when she had more sexual drive than he did. He did not like that, not one little bit. But now, he’s more feral…wilder…when he gets really excited and smells his lover’s arousal, these long, cat-like fangs erupt from his gums. When he bites his lover on the neck and smells her blood, he goes bat-shit crazy with love and lust. And when he enters her? Holy hell, it’s like riding down a Class 6 rapids.
His girl cooks with energy. She’s like a mega-watt electricity station when she gets turned on. She becomes this streaming, God almighty torrent of electrical impulses that spark and crackle all around him, enveloping his shaft with light and heat like you wouldn’t believe. And when they come, it’s mind blowing. It’s even better than a drop off a waterfall ledge in his tiny kayak. Yeah…when they come he explodes, detonating into fragments and slipping into the ethers until he can find his way back to consciousness again. Frigging unbelievable…
Having begun to master his own abilities, Cam was all too happy to assist his longtime friend Kai Williams come to grips with his abilities in Wicked Whispering. Kai is this 6’5” green eyed scuba diver with a wild mess of brown, red and blond hair. He’s as sensitive as they come but doesn’t show it. He fronts as an aloof, standoffish guy, refusing to give his heart to anyone. Sex for him is just do your thing, take your pleasure, give some in return and get the hell out of there.
When he starts to open up his heart and accept his abilities, however, Holy Batman…he discovers that he can move and surge with the rhythm of the sea. His pleasure and the pleasure he can give increases with each new encounter. His bronze skin ripples in a perma-glow of twirling, sparkling lights. And whether he’s tripping in the cosmos or grooving on Earth, he enjoys sexual exchanges in committed love with unparalleled enthusiasm. If he’d known sex and intimacy could be this good, this unbelievable, he would’ve embraced his abilities long ago.
As for Kayden, the cosmos hopping Man of Mystery with black hair that falls over his shoulders like a cascade of nightfall? You know, the 6’4” stallion of a guy who wears “peel and press” skin tight attire that hugs his perfectly ripped body? I wouldn’t dream of sharing his story. He’s far too arrogant to let me in on his secrets. You’ll have to read the books to find out.

Guest post Moira Rogers

Please welcome Moira Rogers!

Hello there!  I’m Bree, one half of the paranormal romance writing duo of Moira Rogers, and I’m on a wild and crazy blog tour talking about dangerous men and the women who love them. And I’m not just talking about their heroines—I mean all the women who love them, including those of us who read & write about them!  That’s why I’m here with an excerpt from Keeping Company With Bloodhounds, a book that gives all the dirty details about those dangerous warriors. (Even if it only exists in the fictional world of the Bloodhounds.)

Keeping Company With Bloodhounds is a fictional book of fictional gossip, and in the Bloodhounds universe, I imagine it would only be the first of its kind. When you have a lot of independent minded genetically modified super soldiers with base instincts and unnatural lusts, you're bound to get a good story or two out of it. Or ten.  Or a hundred.

“Behind THE DELPHI BLOODLINE by Donna Del Oro”:  Interview of  Athena, the Modern-day descendant of the Bloodline

THE DELPHI BLOODLINE: A smart, romantic thriller about an ancient bloodline of psychic women, the ruthless tycoon who wants to enslave them, the mysterious man who wants to protect them, and the modern-day descendant who must fight to stay alive and free!

Interviewer: You’re twenty-six, a lovely young woman and an acclaimed artist. Has it been difficult to maintain a low profile as a gifted psychic and heir of the Delphi Bloodline?

Athena: Oh yes! After I was attacked by the brother of a rapist I helped the San Francisco Police Department put away, I left the city and fled to the high desert of Nevada.

Interviewer: Is that where your brother, Chris, and Kas Skoros found you?

Athena: Much to my surprise, Chris shows up with this stranger, this Greek-American whose mother is a distant cousin to my own mother. After Mama disappears, they feel I am now at risk. At first, I don’t trust him—he’s too handsome, too slick, too…well, aggressive.

ARC Review Demon Hunting in the Deep South by Lexi George

Title: Demon Hunting in the Deep South (Demon Hunting #2)
Author: Lexi George
Source: Netgalley
Genre: Paranormal Romantic Comedy
Length: Novel (336pgs)
Release Date: July 31 2012 from Kensington Publishing Corp

The warrior and the wallflower . . .
Shy, self-conscious Evie Douglass tries to stay under the radar, especially when her nemesis Meredith Peterson, aka The Death Starr, is anywhere around. Meredith and her bitch posse of skinny girlfriends have tormented Evie since the seventh grade, calling her names like The Whale and Thunder Thighs.
Evie tries to stay invisible, but that’s not an easy thing for a plus-sized gal to do in a small town like Hannah, Alabama. She finds it doubly hard to avoid Meredith’s wrath once she takes a job at the lumber mill. You see, Meredith’s husband is Evie’s new boss. Translation: more torture time for The Death Starr.

Evie thinks things couldn’t get much worse until the morning she finds Meredith’s bloody body sprawled across her desk. Typical Meredith, she gets herself dead mere days after a very public scene in which Meredith accuses Evie of having an affair with her husband. Worse, the murder weapon is found in Evie’s car.

Suddenly, Evie is the Number One suspect in a sensational murder case. But she’s got bigger problems. Hannah is infested with demons—soul sucking, body snatching creatures of evil—and, for some reason, they want Evie. The only thing standing between Evie and death or possible possession is a hunky blond demon slayer named Ansgar.

Ansgar is a Dalvahni warrior, a supernaturally gorgeous race whose sole purpose is to hunt down and capture rogue demons.

Evie could almost swear that Ansgar is interested in more than demons. He seems interested in her. Ridiculous, of course, because he’s sex on two legs and she’s…

Well, she’s Whaley Douglass.

To add to Evie’s troubles, Meredith doesn’t even have the decency to stay dead. She shows back up as a ghost and she’s more of a beyotch than ever. Meredith has deathnesia—she can’t remember who killed her—leaving Evie to solve the mystery herself, or go to jail for a murder she didn’t commit.

Fans of Kerrelyn Sparks and Molly Harper will devour Demon Hunting in the Deep South.
It had everything I love in a paranormal romance plus fantastic comedic relief.

Evie's character has had it rough.  Mother died young, dad turned into a drunk, kids making fun of her weight through school and beyond; you'd be right in assuming she doesn't have the greatest self esteem.  Now, don't get the wrong idea, she's not simpering in a dark room wailing about her life, but she's not having a great time either.  She's just coasting through trying to stay under, around, AS FAR away from the radar as she can get.  Be polite and unmemorable seem to be her philosophy in life.  All that changes and she's thrust into the limelight when the town's long standing queen-bee shows up dead in her office.

After thousands of years of existence the supposed emotionless Ansgar can't understand why he's so drawn to Evangeline Douglass. He's tried everything to get her out of system since meeting her.  He erased her memory of him and went back to his own dimension but just can't get her out of his mind.  He finally decides to return to Hannah but with Evangeline being accused of murder, his own feelings of unworthiness, and that pesky problem of demons trying to abduct her he may never get to explore his new emotions, including love.

Demon Hunting in the Deep South's story was great, but what really made it for me were the citizens of Hannah, Alabama. They have to be some of the craziest characters I've ever read.  Even the pets have huge personalities!  From the Mayor's pet possum Priscilla, to Frodo the finger munching, alligator-chihuahua. You just can't get away from the hilarious imagination of Lexi George.

I can't recommend Demon Hunting in the Deep South enough.  Angsty romance, self realization, kick-butt demon hunting, and enough hilarious hijinx to keep you laughing all the way through.  I also suggest reading this one with a partner.  There are soo many funny lines that you'll want to laugh out loud with someone else!

Guest romance author Sara Daniel

Please welcome romance author Sara Daniel!

Thanks for having me here today. I’m Sara Daniel, and I’m excited to talk about the magical, paranormal world where the Wiccan Haus series is set.

The Wiccan Haus intrigued me from the moment I heard Musa Publishing was developing a magical world that was open to submissions. When I saw the cover for the first book in the series, I couldn’t look away from the intense, rugged hero. I bought my copy of Shifting Hearts by Dominique Eastwick as soon as it was available and read it that night. I fell in love with the quirky cast of characters that inhabited this island off the coast of Maine, accessible only by a single ferry boat a week.

The world building is consistent between each book in the series. The island is run by four siblings, each with unique powers and fascinating personalities. The rest of the cast of continuing characters are just as quirky and memorable. I fell in love with each one as they took turns pushing my wounded military hero and his ex-girlfriend to grow, heal, and recognize their love for each other.

Best of all, I get to revisit the inhabitants and their quirks when I read Kate Richards’ An Apple Away and Dominique Eastwick’s Siren’s Serenade!

He has nothing left to offer. She's determined to show him just how much he's worth.

Shot by a member of his military team, Justin Lawson retreats to the Wiccan Haus. Holly Walters refuses to accept her boyfriend's out-of-the-blue rejection without an explanation, even if getting the answers forces her to be trapped on a bizarre island for an entire week. She's going to use every minute to work Justin out of her system once and for all. Justin's body and spirit begin to heal under Holly's loving ministrations. As she talks about never seeing each other again, he realizes he never wants to let her go. But the rogue assassin who had gone after Justin before is after him again. Before he can fight to make Holly believe in their love, he'll have to fight for both their lives.

Excerpt:

“How did you hurt your knee?” Holly asked.

“Occupational hazard,” Justin muttered.

That wasn’t very comforting, considering he was in the military and always going off on missions that he couldn’t give her any details about. “Did you fall and break it?”

“Bullet shattered it.” His words were clipped.

She flinched, wanting desperately to reach for him, hating to think of the pain he’d been in, the pain she’d known nothing about. “And how long before or after this happened did you send me an eight word break-up text?”

“About seventy-two hours after.”

She immediately knew she’d been right not to take his text at face value. The self-destruction of a client and the week of lost work were worth it. She’d needed this explanation. More than that, it proved there was still hope for them. “So you conceivably could have still been under the effects of anesthesia.”

“I wasn’t.”

“But you were on pain medication for sure.”

“Don’t make excuses for me. I was an ass. I broke up with you, and you deserve better.”

Why Did I Choose to Write an Unconventional Paranormal?

Let’s talk about paranormal romance. Sit with me for a while and I’ll share what I love about the various types, and why I chose to make Dark Daze what I call an “unconventional paranormal”.

Why I love Vampire novels

A hot and powerful man who wants only you.
One who has waited not just a lifetime, but several lifetimes, to be with you.
With strength, paranormal sex appeal, and deadly fangs, he is the ultimate bad boy.
He’s usually a loner and often taciturn, yet he shares himself with you. (As much as he’s able, with the tortured past and all.)
There are so many wonderful vampire characters, from Lestat to Dracula to Edward and everything in between. Need I say more?

Why I love Werewolf novels

Another wonderful example of the sexy and dominant hero.
He’s the best of the “best friend” hero. He’s going to nuzzle you like a cuddly, furry lapdog and protect you like a fierce wolf.
The pack mentality brings a level of loyalty to the romance I find appealing.
Sexy and strong werewolf characters abound as well, from Jacob to Lachlain. And who could forget Michael J Fox’s teen wolf. (Kidding.) Seriously though, there are some sexy and loyal wolves out there waiting to fall in love.

Why I love Unconventional paranormal novels

This encompasses all the other types of paranormal romance, from witches and trolls to psychics and those with telekinetic abilities. These novels can have a wide range of times, places, and hero/heroine types, and the versatility appealed to me. You never know what you will find when you open one of these books. Ghouls, Ghosts, the Easter Bunny, they can all pop out at you. Your hero or heroine can possess any number of powers and have any kind of past.

Why I chose Unconventional for this series

A little background on my writing process. When I write a novel, the characters come to me fully formed and show me why they should be the hero/heroine. Then the story forms out of how those characters interact and react during the situations thrown at them.
When I began the process of writing this book, I’d just heard about the end of the Mayan calendar (12-21-2012) theories. Some said it would bring the end of the world, and others suggested it would mean a major change. I also recall hearing something about a rare planetary alignment. All these changes begged for a story.
Then I wondered, “What if the world could end without ending? Better yet, what if scientists explained it away, as they have so many unexplained things, and life went on as usual?” The basic idea formed.
Then I looked to see who might step forward as my hero and heroine. I was pleasantly surprised to see the wounded yet strong Ian and Brie step forward. Their pasts and the things they were trying to hide fit perfectly into my scenario and sparked off each other.

I hope my rather unusual explanation helps you to understand what I love about unconventional paranormal romance. I do hope that one day a sexy vamp or a loyal werewolf will find their way into my stories, but until then, I’m happy to write tales of my flawed yet courageous humans and the powers they find themselves in possessing.

Leave a comment and tell me why you love paranormal romances, (any type) and be entered to win a copy of Dark Daze.

Blurb -

On Dec 21, 2012, at 2:12pm, the sky went dark all over the world, and people's lives changed in ways they feared to admit. Thousands died in accidents while others claimed to have seen demons and found themselves locked up in their local psychiatric ward. Scientists explained away the phenomenon, and things seemed to return to normal.

After a decade of trying to conceal a power she never expected or wanted, Brie Duval was used to being alone. When life—or more appropriately, a meddling friend, sends her on a blind date with Ian Connors, she discovers she wasn't the only person to gain powers that day.

They find themselves falling in love while on the run from a creature with eyes that suck in light and a force that controls their wills, but Brie can't help but fear their love is a side effect of the menace. In order to survive, they must put aside their fears and embrace the gifts they've fought so hard to deny.

Creating the world of the Vampire Erotic Theatre romance series

It’s wonderful to be back here at Bitten by Paranormal Romance for the next stop in my Vampirerotique Summer Book Tour.

Today, I’m going to talk about creating the world of my Vampire Erotic Theatre romance series.

The thing I love most about writing vampire romances is that I get to play with a societal structure and I often get to really flex my world-building skills. I can’t help it. Whenever I write a vampire romance, I have to dream up a different sort of society, a world in which they live with laws they abide or break, people they either look up to or down on, and other fascinating aspects. It’s an intrinsic part of my vampire worlds and as important to me as what sort of vampire I’m writing.

Vampires are ageless. They live for centuries if not millennia, so it makes sense to me that they would have a very structured society that might seem antiquated to humans and perhaps a social divide too. You have to consider that they’re from a different time. When they were raised (or turned, but more about that later) it was probably in a very different world to our modern one, a time when humans had a very structured society too. The divide in modern human society is less noticeable than the one that existed a century or more ago. The divide in vampire society in this world isn’t.
