My Lasting Love for Historical Romance
by: Ally Broadfield

I was introduced to the magnificent world of historical romance at the age of twelve. I had already read all of the children’s books in our local library, but luckily a friend who babysat frequently had stumbled upon a stash of historical romances and shared them with me. I had always loved history, but it wasn’t until I read my first historical romance that I truly experienced it.

The book was The Storm and the Splendor by Jennifer Blake, and what made me stay up all night to finish it was the way the story transported me to another time and place. I was in the seventh grade, so of course I had already studied history, but I had never been able to envision what it was like to be in a particular place at a particular time. That’s what I love most about historical romance—I become the heroine, share her hopes, her feelings, her experiences. I struggled for air while her stays were tightened; I choked down nausea as she hid in her cabin on the ship; and most of all, I fell desperately in love with her hero.

Of course the sex scenes in the stories I read were quite scandalous for a twelve-year-old, but it was the escape to another time and place that I cherished. Though the stories transported me to different worlds, they weren’t completely alien. The characters’ thoughts, hopes, insecurities, struggles, and triumphs were just like mine.

Though I enjoy reading all genres of historical romance, as an author, I love to write Regencies. The genre is characterized by witty dialogue, wealthy noblemen, and strict social guidelines, all of which coalesce to create a framework that challenges an author to find a way to get the hero and heroine together. Of course, that’s not entirely a bad thing since it leads to lots of sexual tension. Stolen glances across the ballroom, accidental touches, a moment alone in the corridor, and the knowledge that being caught alone together could lead to a forced marriage or ruination for the heroine certainly keeps things interesting.

The other thing I love about writing Regencies are the heroes. They are the original alpha males that we find in contemporary romance today, but instead of athletes, actors, or billionaire businessmen, we have dukes, earls, and soldiers. They are dashing and powerful, and will not yield to anyone – except the heroine, of course. And since we’re talking about heroes, I’ll just come out and say it. Mr. Darcy and Captain Wentworth are, hands down, the best romance heroes ever written.

Do you agree? If not, who are your favorite romance heroes?

About Ally Broadfield

Ally has worked as a horse trainer, director of marketing and development, freelance proofreader, and a children’s librarian, among other things. None of them were as awesome as writing romance novels (though the librarian gig came closest). She lives in Dallas, Texas and is convinced her house is shrinking, possibly because she shares it with three kids, five dogs, a cat, a rabbit, and assorted reptiles. Oh, and her husband.

Ally likes to curse in Russian because very few people know what she’s saying, and spends most of what would be her spare time letting dogs in and out of the house and shuttling kids around. She has many stories in her head looking for an opportunity to escape onto paper. She writes historical romance set in Regency England and Imperial Russia.

You can find Ally on her websiteFacebook, and Twitter, though she makes no claims of using any of them properly.

Author Interview with Tamara Gill

I'd like to welcome Tamara Gill, author of A Stolen Season, to the blog today for a short interview.

What made you decide to starting writing – and why romance?
I started to write romance after walking past some books in a shop and a novel, with the most beautiful Empire style gown caught my eye. I bought the book, which happened to be a Stephanie Laurens novel. Wow. Fell instantly in love with the Cynsters and my love of romance novels was born. After that, stories of my own started to form in my mind, and I decided to write some of them down. It was the beginning of my own romance with writing, which will be a life-long love.
If you could visit any period in time when would that be?
The Regency period would have to be my favorite period in time. And it’s not because of what wars were won and lost in that time, who was on the English throne, or because of the scandals Lord Byron was causing, but because of the gowns. Since seeing the Empire style gown for the first time, I wanted to know what period had dresses like that. It all comes down to the fashion I’m afraid.
Do you find it difficult to write across several romance genres?  How do you get your mind to change gears?
I write across different genres, and I hope I do it well. I don’t find it difficult, but I do check facts when writing in historical periods, but not before starting the book, I do it during. I like writing across different time periods as it never leaves me bored. There is always something new to explore, different speech colloquialisms to use and of course, the hero’s are products of their time, so it makes for interesting conflicts with the heroine.
As a fan of historical sites – what are a few of your favorites?
I’m a huge fan of historical places. I love history and all its gory glory. My favorite place in all the world is the Tower of London. There’s something about that place that calls my name. Every time I’m in England I have to visit the site. Maybe it’s because the crown jewels are housed there. *grin*
Are there any popular historical shows that you just have to watch?  I’m currently addicted to Reign about Mary Queen of Scots.
I love Reign, in fact, I had to ban myself from watching it all the time as I was getting no writing done. I also love historical movies, Jane Austen ones especially. Outlander is a given, I’d marry Sam Heughan…oops I mean, Jamie tomorrow. The White Queen miniseries was fantastic, and I loved the play of families that show portrayed, and not always favourably either. If it’s an historical movie, of any era, I’m there.

Quickfire Questions.
Tomboy or girly girl?
I’m an Aussie. I’m a bit of both.
Cats, dogs or something else?
Cats
Leather or lace?

Now his brother is not only out for revenge, but he also has Sarah's device. Which means an entirely different approach.

Reading Historical Romance at a Paranormal Blog

Reading What?

I’ve read just as much historical romance as I have paranormal romance this past year.  (At least that is what the pie chart shows on my Goodreads stats.)  So you can see why I was a little bit leery when Laurie first asked me to become a reviewer for BBPR.

First of all, I was a rookie when it came to reading romance; I barely had my toes in the water.  Secondly, writing for me is like banging my head up against a wall; I get nowhere fast.  And the biggest one of all, I’m the slowest reader E.V.E.R.  Go ahead, ask Laurie – she’ll tell you.  I savor my books.  When everyone else has read three or four – yep, I’ve read one.  But I’ve made it one year here and she hasn’t kicked me out…yet.  *throwing confetti*

Getting back to the historical thing.  I don’t know what it is that attracts to me all of those eras:  Regency, Victorian, Highlanders, Georgian, whatever.  I’m sure there’s a list somewhere detailing which era fell within what time constraint.  (If you know where it is, could you please point me in the right direction.)  I’m sure it has a great deal to do with the awesomeness of the brilliant authors and the worlds they create.  Or maybe it’s what lies beneath all those clothes!?!

Then again, I’ve noticed with the historical romance I’ve read over the last few years, all of my favorite heroes are alpha men.  Well, there may a smidgen of beta, but not very much.  There is something to be said about a devilish rogue needing to be tamed.

I blame it all on the subliminal influences from the 1960’s.  Yes, My Lovelies, I am a child of the era and now known as a Baby Boomer.  Who knew that decades later I would fall in love with reading romance *those trashy* novels.  I’ll read just about all of the romance genres with historical and paranormal being the top two on my list and I owe it all two these two gems:

"Hungry for those good things........."

*sigh*

DAYUM, Mark Lindsey is fine!!

It has come to my attention that another fine, vampire, paranormal romance is being released very shortly and wouldn’t you know it, #shitdamnhellfire I’m four or five behind in reading that series.  And, AND, to top it off, my second most fav BDB, Tohr, is getting his book and I’m two behind there as well #shitdamnhellfireagain.  Well, I guess 2012 just might be the year paranormal outweighs the historical.

I just couldn’t help myself….a helluva way to end the year and start a new one.

Note to somebody:  Need to make a new Paul Marron video – many, many book covers to choose from!

Your presence is requested at romantic Twill Castle for the wedding of Miss Clio Whitmore and . . . and . . . ?

After eight years of waiting for Piers Brandon, the wandering Marquess of Granville, to set a wedding date, Clio Whitmore has had enough. She's inherited a castle, scraped together some pride, and made plans to break her engagement.

Not if Rafe Brandon can help it. A ruthless prizefighter and notorious rake, Rafe is determined that Clio will marry his brother—even if he has to plan the dratted wedding himself.

So how does a hardened fighter cure a reluctant bride's cold feet?
● He starts with flowers. A wedding can't have too many flowers. Or harps. Or cakes.

● He lets her know she'll make a beautiful, desirable bride—and tries not to picture her as his.

● He doesn't kiss her.

● If he kisses her, he definitely doesn't kiss her again.

● When all else fails, he puts her in a stunning gown. And vows not to be nearby when the gown comes off.

● And no matter what—he doesn't fall in disastrous, hopeless love with the one woman he can never call his own.

I think the opening scene pretty much set up the tone of this book as classic Tessa Dare. She is very good at "dare" I say, romantic comedy, but in a historical setting so to speak. Even though I must use the term Historical as say, more of and idea, than actuality within the premise of this book.

The opening scene has us seeing Clio as she walks in on Rafe, thinking he's ready to give up and hang himself when in fact, he's only setting up his boxing punching bag for training. The shenanigans don't stop there, they pretty much continue throughout the book, including a scene involving the dog, a ruby ring, and Rafe's trainer, Bruiser. Yeah it was really gross.

Miss Clio Whitmore, AKA Miss "Waitmore" as she has been dubbed, and Rafe have have been friends since childhood, in their youth Rafe always teased her and pulled mischievous tricks on her. Now he is wanting to "play" with Clio in a different manner all together.  Yet he is at odds because she is his brother's fiance. Rafe pretty much spends the entire book trying to convince Clio that she does in fact want to be married to Piers, and fighting the attraction that he has carried for her since his youth and yes the love he has for her.

Clio and Rafe had really good chemistry together, but Clio herself did not have much of a backbone. I blame that on her overly critical mother and her less than supportive family. Cleo's older sister Daphne is a witch, with a Capital B, a social climber and more than a bit annoying.  Daphne's soft in the middle husband Teddy is no better, with their crude remarks constantly about Clio's weight.  Her younger sister Phoebe was a nice break to watch although she was a bit quirky, with a touch of "Rain Man" about her, but I look forward to reading her story.

Recommended for fans of Tessa Dare, and anyone wanting a nice Romance, with a little bit of comedic flair thrown in, plenty of sexual heat that does not go unanswered, and if Historical accuracy is of no concern, well this book is for you.

I did enjoy the book, I enjoyed the progression of the relationship between Rafe and Clio very much. It was a quick read and certainly not one that's going to have your heart tugging and pulling at strings just to see the H/H get together, but it was pleasant. Even though the historical accuracy was really a joke, which usually does drive me insane, for some reason didn't really bother me that much.  A nice afternoon read overall.

My Review:

A quick sexy read, with a good story line, at 96 pages. I read it in one sitting, couldn't put it down. This is an erotic romance with a historical backdrop.

Yule does a good job of having her story set in 1889 England to illustrate the inequality of women and the treatment of anyone who deviates from the norm without allowing the historical aspect to overshadow the story. Historical romance fans may be disappointed by the lack of historical dialog but if so, the story makes up for it in other ways.

Lucy has a problem. Even though she's been running the family estate for the past couple of years while her father became more and more ill, he died leaving a will that is like a slap in the face but not totally unexpected. Lucy's father died leaving Lucy, an enlightened young woman, the only Levegne family member left except for a male cousin. He stipulated in his will she be required to marry by her twenty-sixth birthday, and to turn its management over to her husband" in order to inherit. The story begins with her only having three months left until the birthday deadline due to having to spend the past many, many months in mourning.

The Trio of Trouble, three friends since childhood, decide to crash Lucy's party with the intention of winning a wager to be the first to bed her. Paul "the adventurer poet", Jeremy "the level-headed one" and Kendall "the hothead, always spoiling for a fight" have no idea this party will change their lives forever when Lucy turns the tables on them and has the time of her life doing it.

Heed the author's warning! "Once you read about Lucy‘s liaison, one man may not be enough."

The chemistry between Lucy and the guys individually is electric. The ménage scenes between the four of them set are so hot I needed a tall glass of sweet tea to keep the temperature down. Who wouldn't want to be the focus of three very attentive men in bed at the same time especially when there is romance attached to each one? There is a quick F/F scene that has some heat itself.

I enjoyed this story utterly even though I figured out the novel solution to Lucy's predicament in advance. I think romance, historical romance and erotic romance fans will enjoy this.
