When Maya Smock writes her first novel, everything seems to go her way. Her book practically writes itself. She marries her gorgeous agent. Her name is on all of the best seller lists. Billionaire author Jay McCallister takes an interest in her meteoric rise to fame and invites her into his world of alien-believing celebrities. Her life changes forever when he tells her that they were both created inside of a laboratory. These authors are embedding an alien genetic code within the pages of their novels that originated from Nazi Germany because...

The time has come. They are here.
 Brilliant and Creative Writing!

A Sci-fi Conspiracy theory that leaps and expands into new boundaries.

What a Perfect book for those who love an excellent thought provoking, conspiracy twisting, and mind boggling turns of drama that will have you questioning every legend, tale, or heritage you think you knew.  How pure of a human are you – Angel, Demon, or Alien? Ever thought why some individuals are smarter and more successful than others – how it came naturally for them and harder for others?  Where did our race really originate from – God, Angels, Aliens, or how about a man made tube where genetic modification was used by mad scientist – example: Hitler / cloning for perfection / Alien abduction?  Actually, how did our ancestors really get on earth – really from dust to dust or was it time travel? These are just a few of the scenarios weaved into this awesome story along with romance, hatred, jealousy, murder, madness, psycho plots, and the unthinkable possibilities that make this one hell of a drama and a thrilling suspense you won’t be able to put down.

I was hooked from the first paragraph.  Dina Rae has a way of creating characters that draw you into their world and have you memorized with every word or action they make.  The plot seems to start out small but as you read towards the end and think you may have it figured out – wrong! No, you find there is a much bigger plot to be told and revealed.

Maya Smock character is a sweet and smart young lady and I loved how even though writing came second nature to her she was still down to earth and knew how to get what she wanted – especially the way she got Claude to listen to her manuscript – LOL  Claude on the other hand, I didn’t like him very much in the end especially how he uses his wife, brother, and ladies of the night.  What a real psycho! Then there is Erick O’Reilly – what a sweetheart and I’m still hoping for a Happy Ever After for him and Maya.

Jay McCallister was more than what I expected and I only wanted to know more about him.  His true identity and relationship with Maya was mind boggling.  Was disappointed at the end, however, I’m hoping we get a great surprise involving him in the 2nd installment of this series.

Another part of this story is about the Nazi scientist along with our government’s secret agenda of creating the perfect and powerful human race and their involvement with an Alien species, how a new species was born, and how they are among our society today just totally kept me intrigued. Though the story doesn’t get to the point of how this ties in with Jay McCallister and Maya, I’m looking forward to the revealing truth of the two plots becoming intertwined to one big one.

Overall, this was a fantastic story. There were many exciting and thrilling episodes all throughout the book.  Truthfully I was shocked that the story didn’t come to an explosive end, no it is left open for a bigger plot and for the characters Maya and the mad scientist to finish telling their stories.  Yes it is leaving me hanging and now I’m jonesing for the next installment.

Addie thinks she is a boring Archeologist with a quirky gift. One that will get her the biggest find of her life is she plays it right. But Addie gets more than she bargained for when she discovers a hidden treasure. Now, faced with making a decision to leave her world and travel to another with the three brothers who are her mates, or so they say. Addie has to make the hardest decision of her life, or wake up form the dream she is having. But the men are hot and the sex hotter, why wake up? HeVan is a world trying to find their lost Queen. When they send out their best men to travel to find her, they find more than they ever dreamed of. HeVan has been dwindling in populations since the loss of their Queen, they need her back and they also need her descendants. Finding them will be the easy part, convincing them they are from another planet will be the hard part.
I really loved the society and history Lucy Kelly has created in this story. She has gone to great lengths to give the reader a new and different world that is just similar enough for us Earthlings to relate to. When the Hevanthians injured queen crash lands on Earth, her only thought is to keep her people alive and well, and part of that involves procreating with the natives.

Generations later, Addie stumbles upon a find that will completely blow her mind - and she is suitable shocked. It's a pet peeve of mine when characters accept things a little to easily, but Addie handles this sudden change in her life realistically and bravely. Although I'm sure the fact that her discovery includes a boatload of hot guys that all seem to adore her helps a little. There are some side characters (which I'm assuming come into the story more later) that accepted a little too easily for me, but Kelly did a good job of trying to explain why and most of the time I believed her.

The romance was a little sudden - but I tend to see that a lot in fated mates type of stories. And at times things tended to jump around a little too much with not a lot of transition from one issue to another. This was a great start to a series with a solid base for many more happy couples (triples? quads? I'm not sure what to call them) in future books. The men needed to have a little more backbone at times. They caved a little too easily to Addie's demands at times and a nice conflict of differing opinions is a great way to show some personality and how the characters think. I hope to learn more about HeVan and what's happened since the queen left. It sounds like a fascinating place.

Now that she’s one of his new recruits, it’s imperative he stop thinking about her in that way.

Especially now that the Knox has been secretly infiltrated by the enemy.

Mia Wolf’s new commander is icy, no-BS, and completely gorgeous. His glances send heat searing through her. Neither of them can afford to make this mistake, yet desire takes hold, consuming them. For the first time, Leigh’s iron sense of honor falters as his heart fights for love… and against an enemy trying to destroy everything they hold dear.

Purchase your copy of DAMAGE CONTROL:

Excerpt:
Leigh didn’t want to examine exactly why he felt the need to make Mia his responsibility. Yeah, he couldn’t ignore how intelligent and daring—and if he were being completely honest—how goddamn sexy she was, but he’d never done anything in his life for any other reason than duty. And, he assured himself, that was what this also came down to—his obligations. She’d almost been killed under his watch. He had to find the traitor and protect his people, even if that meant going outside the regulations to achieve his ends.

“I’ve put a lot of thought into what you did,” he started, choosing his words carefully. “And the way I see it, you have nothing left to lose. So the classified information I’m about to tell you cannot be repeated; otherwise I will see you buried.” Her eyes widened a touch, and his conscience kicked him with a vicious jolt of guilt at threatening and possibly scaring her. This could get them both killed or dishonorably discharged and dumped in prison.

“I’ve been given reason to believe there’s a mole in the fighter-pilot squadron.”

“So it’s true? I heard rumors, but I didn’t believe—”

“It’s true.” A small swell of dismay washed through him that apparently gossip about the moles had spread so far already. “There could be as many as a dozen on the ship.”

She crossed her arms, expression somber. “Why are you telling me this?”

“Instead of reporting what you did this morning, I want you to use your specializied skills to help me find the mole in my squad.”

She took a deep breath, seeming to process what was no doubt an unexpected request.

“Accessing the systems one time for an hour was a risk. But this will require me to spend hours searching all kinds of data and accessing all kinds of stuff. It will increase the chance of getting caught by an infinite amount.”

“I know, which is why I want you to use my datapad. If someone does pick up the activity, it’ll come back to me.”

A cynical half smile tilted her lips up. “And will anyone believe that you had the necessary skills to do something like this?”

He shrugged. “I’m sure they won’t. But they won’t ask, and I won’t tell. There’s a chance I’d be able to use my years of service to get out of it lightly, whereas you would take the fall. But that’s only if we get caught.”

Being a cyborg was so much better when all his parts worked. Avion’s nanotechnology stopped functioning after some experimentation done on him by the military. They broke him and now, Avion is no better than a human, even more annoying, he’s dying.

But at least he completed his final mission. He saved, One.

Mysterious and alluring, Avion isn’t the only person who wonders what surprises this woman hides. The human military and their alien allies fear what she’s capable of and will stop at nothing to destroy her. However, the one thing they didn’t take into account is that the cyborgs always protect their own, and they aren’t afraid to use deadly force.

And no one could imagine the depths One will stoop to in order to protect the man she loves.
Avion has been in the story line for the past two or three books now. Injured and near death, the cyborgs return to Earth to try and find the origin of their tech to see if they can jump-start his system with some new nanos. But they run into a lot of bumps along the way - including a strange woman who calls herself One.

One is a very intriguing character, and as I found out more about her, she grew on me even more. She has a strange dual personality that she's contantly wondering which is really her. She brings up tons of interesting dynamics that really throw the Cyborgs for a loop. If what she says is even partially true, then the Cyborg world will be changing drastically.

One and Avion make an odd pair at first, but they are connected in a way that seems to defy logic. Their's isn't a traditional romance, but they aren't very traditional characters either. From the very beginning they just seemed to fit together and it was so much fun watching them teach each other exciting new things.

While many of the earlier books in the series can be read as stand-alone romances, in order to truly enjoy this one, you will want to read the previous books. Otherwise there will be parts you just won't understand.

Grand Master's Game by Aurora Springer - Cover Reveal and Excerpt

Title: Grand Master's Game (Grand Master's Trilogy #2)
Author: Aurora Springer
Genre: Sci-Fi Romance
Release Date: July 14, 2015

BONUS!!! Aurora Springer will be part of our upcoming Sci-Fi September Tour of the Universe event!!!

Spin across the galaxy as Violet and her Grand Master hunt their enemies.

Cracks in the portal web threaten galactic civilization, and suspicions fall on the mysterious Grand Masters with their immense psychic powers. Once, there were twelve Grand Masters, humans and aliens, on the Council. Now there are eleven. One was killed when the young pawn, Violet, rescued her Grand Master, Athanor, from the Red Queen’s dungeon. The Red Queen fled the fight and now she lurks out of sight, regenerating her energies.

Athanor devises a risky plan to expose his enemies on the Council and force the Red Queen into the open. His strategy will employ Violet’s empathic skills as his secret weapon. Meanwhile, she wrestles with her erratic talents and doubts about their unequal partnership. In their search for revenge, they contend with the portal crisis, psychic traps and hostile aliens. In the inevitable battle of Grand Masters, Violet and Athanor each will face their worst nightmares. What is the sacrifice for victory?

Excerpt from Grand Master's Game:
Violet gazed at Athanor’s grim features, and asked, “Why are you worried about the danger?”

Lowering his gaze, he sighed. “I felt my death was near when I was chained in Morrigu’s prison with my powers damped to nothing. She wanted to torture me before she killed me.”

“Oh Athanor, we rescued you in time!” Violet hugged him tightly. “I’m sorry I doubted your intentions.”

“There is something you can do for me if you are willing to face the peril. Your youth makes me reluctant to ask.”

“I’m twenty two, legally an adult!” she cried indignantly. “What can I do?”

He took a deep breath and his brows joined in a dark frown. “Tingu told me to protect you. Yet, nowhere is truly safe. Even if I established you on some remote planet, you would be defenseless if they found you.”

“I could retreat to the dragon lords on Sythos,” she suggested. The planet of Sythos was the safest place she could imagine.

“Sythos is not safe!” he grunted in contradiction. “The dragons love to fight. You would be safe merely as long as your friend, Ythris, retains his status and his eyrie.”

“Well, I’d prefer to fight at your side and defy the danger.” She pressed her knuckles against the side of his harsh face.

He covered her small hand with his large one, and kissed her fingers, trickling psi energy. “Yes, I know your mettle. I plan to employ your acute senses in my campaign, and I promise to protect you with my life.”

“Of course I’ll help! My goals are the same as yours. I want a safe and peaceful galaxy.” Thrilled by their closeness, her face brimmed with mischief and she said, “Shall we see if the bed will break?”

His psi power zinged around them, he clasped her tightly and growled, “An irresistible offer, my delectable pawn.” He breathed in her ear, “Where is your landlady? I don’t wish to cause harm by exposing her to my full power.”

On Earth, when a rebel cyborg leader is drawn into a search for answers, he doesn’t
expect things to blow up. And he’s not just talking about his house. Somehow his heart explodes, too, with the last thing he ever expected—love.

Adam survived the great cyborg purge because the military made a mistake, a mistake they lived to regret. They crossed the line when they decided to take away his free will and turn him into a machine. They erroneously thought him a slave they could command. However, their biggest screw up of all was when they didn’t terminate him at the first sign cyborgs were regaining sentience.

As the rebel cyborg leader on Earth, Adam is doing everything he can to rescue others of his kind. Part of his current, undercover mission involves infiltrating a top secret military facility where he comes in contact with a human scientist. A sexy scientist whom he’s ordered to protect.

What should have been an easy job turns into a fight for his life because it’s not just bullets and hit squads he’s got to worry about, but his heart.

How can one fragile female mean so much? It’s almost too much for a rational-minded cyborg to understand. When the choice is given, escape or let her die, he lets his heart decide, and after that, things start to explode—literally.
A very exciting addtion to the Cyborg series, but I think this book really needs to be read after you have read the others. While pervious books could stand alone, this one brings in some politics and history that you may not fully grasp without having read the previous books.

Adam is a rebel leader for the Cyborgs and has infiltrated a secret military base to try and figure out what they are doing and to rescue any captured Cyborgs while he is there. Here is meets a really fun scientist. I so loved her internal dialog. It really had me cracking up, and her curiosity sets off a chain of events that appears to carry through into the next book as well.

A lot of the Cyborgs we met in past books make an appearance, and they are very important players in the story - which is why you should read the previous books first. There are a few times when Avion, the main character in the next book, steals the show from our main couple here. But I really can't wait to read the next book because of it either!

There is tons of action, explosions (of multiple definitions), and it was an amazing story. I just wish it had concentrated on Adam and his girl a little more.

Best of 2013 - the Last Hour of Gann by R. Lee Smith

Amber Bierce had nothing left except her sister and two tickets on Earth’s first colony-ship. She entered her Sleeper with a five-year contract and the promise of a better life, but awakened in wreckage on an unknown world. For the survivors, there is no rescue, no way home and no hope until they are found by Meoraq—a holy warrior more deadly than any hungering beast on this hostile new world…but whose eyes show a different sort of hunger when he looks at her.

It was his last year of freedom:

Uyane Meoraq is a Sword of Sheul, God’s own instrument of judgment, victor of hundreds of trials, with a conqueror’s rights over all men. Or at least he was until his father’s death. Now, without divine intervention, he will be forced to assume stewardship over House Uyane and lose the life he has always known. At the legendary temple of Xi’Matezh, Meoraq hopes to find the deliverance he seeks, but the humans he encounters on his pilgrimage may prove too great a test even for him…especially the one called Amber, behind whose monstrous appearance burns a woman’s heart unlike any he has ever known.

From R. Lee Smith, author of Heat and Cottonwood, comes an epic new story of desire, darkness and the dawn that comes after The Last Hour of Gann.

The Last Hour of Gann caught my attention while I was waiting for the newest Tracy St. John book to release. I thought, 'Well, I'm waiting for a sci-fi romance, so I'll pick this one up to pass the time.' Little did I know that my random book buy was going to take me on one of the most thought provoking, odd, and memorable rides of my life. EVER.

It's f
uture earth and the population is out of control. After her mother's death Amber and her sister are being evicted from their home. Their resources and choices are limited.
They can:
1. Prostitute themselves
2. Sign up for the country's welfare system, where they'll work for menial wages and be housed in dorms with 100's of other women.
3. Be part of the first voyage to a new planet to colonize.

Amber makes, what she thinks is the best choice, and signs her sister and herself up to be pilgrims to a new world. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned and the ship crashes on an unknown planet. (Thus starts the 'human' story in this saga)

Uyane Meoraq is a certified bad-ass ordained by God. (No joke. The guy gets to kill people based what he feels is 'god's word') The whole planet are religious to the point of being zealots. It hasn't always been that way. There are ruins of cities and towns much like the Earth that Amber and her fellow humans left. An unknown amount of years ago the sin and debauchery of his people brought on the 'Wrath of God'  heralding in the Hour of Gann. After seeing a great fire in the distance Meoraq sets out on a pilgrimage to the holiest of cities. (where he's been told he will actually get to speak to God in the flesh)
Along the way he meets up with Amber and the other human survivors. When he sees the strange, flat face, hair covered beings he decides it's God's will that he take them along on his pilgrimage.
It's a long, and arduous journey that the modern day humans are NOT prepared for. Lack of food, stress, disease, and *really evil* raiders are  a few of the things they encounter along the way.

That's where I'm going to end my summary. Honest truth? That's not even a 10% of what happens in this book.

So where do I start on my actual review?
I LOVED this book. It's been a week since I finished. I wasn't going to write a review, BUT The Last Hour of Gann dug it's way into my subconscious. I just kept thinking about it. If a book can resonate with me like that I feel like it needs to be talked about.

It's not an easy book to read. There are far more unhappy moments than there are happy. (I do want to say right now that there IS a HEA! So don't be afraid!)  BUT getting to it? WOW!

Let's start with the humans:
UGH, Amber couldn't have been stuck with a weaker, more annoying, and conniving lot. She and Meoraq worked their butts off for them, but they never showed a smidgen of gratitude. The best I can figure is that it is a representation of the extreme entitlement that everyone seems to have acquired over the years.

Amber and Meuraq's relationship:  It's VERY slow to build. And heck, it should be. They're alien to each other, literally. Neither one finds the other attractive. But there is a spark that slowly builds. When it finally culminates you can tell it's actually love. Not lust. And it's a beautiful thing.

The setting: Fairly early on I started to realize that the planet used to be much like earth. The cities are almost identical with their towering structures and robots . After the Wrath of God, it's forbidden to live in the cities or to use the machinery, but they are still there. Ghost towns (today) are creepy enough, but imagine that on a city scale with half-functioning robots roaming around. Very scary

The raiders: I'm not going to throw punches. These guys are EVIL! They work outside of the word of God. They rape, kidnap, and murder. This book is realistic. The main characters are not shielded from these evils. It can be hard to read, but is necessary to the story.

The end: I'm not going to spoil anything, but once again I want to point out that there is a bitter-sweet HEA. I don't think it could have ended any better than what the author gave me. I was on pins and needles for the entire book to find out what the holy city and the 'meet up' with God was going to be like. It was just as amazing! Definitely not something I will forget for a long time.

So, obviously, I loved this book. While thinking of writing this review, though I started to have doubts if everyone would share my optimism. I'm going to sum up my thoughts easily enough so you can make the choice:

Pros:
Fantastic world building

Wonderfully written characters. Whether you love them or hate them you will feel something for these people.

Thought provoking plot. (No way you'll walk away from this without questioning our way of life)

Great romance

Realistic circumstances (It's a hard world and that's not hidden)

Here are the cons that I think might turn some people away :

Length: This book is LOOONG. I read fast. I usually devour a 350 page book in a day. The Last Hour of Gann took me four days to read.

Content: Scenes of rape and violence.
And, obviously, there is different species sex going on. While similarly built there are differences that may be a bit shocking to some.

Religion: There are many questions and answers about religion in this book. Let me clarify it is not 'preachy', but it is there and a very large part of the story.

The best summary I can think of is that this is a very heavy book. Metaphorically and literally (if I had this sucker in hard back it would probably be big enough to knock someone out with. lol)
This isn't a 'light beach read'.
It does not fall in the erotic 'mars needs women' troupe.
I can honestly say The Last Hour of Gann stands by itself.
I've never read anything like it and I doubt I will again for a long time.
Simply put: It was absolutely wonderful.

Review and Excerpt: Close Remembrance by Anna Zaires

Title: Close Remembrance (Krinar Chronicles, #3)
Author: Anna Zaires
Source: Author
Genre: Sci-Fi Romance
Length: Novel
Release: Sept 4, 2013
Reviewer: CaroleDee

The stunning conclusion to the critically acclaimed series that has won thousands of fans!

When a ruthless enemy finally strikes, Mia and Korum will face the biggest test of their relationship yet. But it’s Korum’s own secrets that may ultimately tear them apart.

From the beaches of Costa Rica to a planet in a distant galaxy, theirs is a love story that may change the world . . .
*Warning: This book contains strong sexual content and explicit language and is not suitable for readers under 18.

Close Remembrance was a fantastic conclusion to all of the trials Mia and Korum have been through.

Through the two previous books we've seen Korum be slightly manipulative and, let's be honest, selfish. In book three, when faced with losing Mia forever, I saw a different side to the alpha that was much softer. Of, course, he's still a K, so he's got his swagger, but watching him work to win Mia's love for a second time was so much fun to read :)

Ah, and let's talk about our sweet, naive Mia....well...she is no more! The chick has finally embraced her sexuality! HOORAY! Watching her character develop has been so great. It just brings a realistic vibe to an, otherwise ('cmon it is Sci-Fi), unrealistic situation. There may be aliens, and a very different earth, but a early 20 something girl having problems brings it home.

I'm going to stay away from a book summary on this review, because I don't want to ruin any of the fun. Just know that our loving couple get their HEA, and the ride to get there is a wild one!

Tuesday was a day off in Lenkarda, and it was also Maria’s birthday. The vivacious girl had sent her a holographic message over the weekend, formally inviting her to the party on the beach at two in the afternoon. Mia had gladly accepted.

“So I don’t get to come?” Korum was lounging on the bed and watching her get ready for the party. His golden eyes gleamed with amusement, and she knew that he was teasing her.

“Sorry, sweetie,” she told him mockingly, twirling in front of the mirror. “No cheren allowed. Charl only.”

He grinned. “Such discrimination.”

She wore the necklace he’d given her and a light floaty dress with a swimsuit underneath – just in case the party involved any swimming in the ocean.

“Yes, well, you know how that goes,” she said, grinning back. “We’re too cool for all you Ks.”

She loved that she could banter with him now. Somehow, almost imperceptibly, their relationship had assumed a more equal footing. He still liked to be in control – and he could still be incredibly domineering on occasion – but she was beginning to feel like she could stand up to him. The knowledge that he loved her, that her thoughts and opinions mattered to him, was very liberating.

“All right,” she said, bending down to give him a chaste kiss on the cheek, “I have to run.”

Before she could pull away, however, his arm snaked around her waist, and she found herself flat on her back on the bed, pinned down by his large muscular body.

“Korum!” She wriggled, trying to get away. “I’m running late! You told me yourself it’s an insult to be late –”

“One kiss,” he cajoled, holding her effortlessly. She could see the familiar signs of arousal on his face and feel his cock hardening against her leg. Her body reacted in predictable fashion, her insides clenching in anticipation and her breathing picking up.

She shook her head. “No, we can’t . . .”

“Just one kiss,” he promised, lowering his head. His mouth was hot and skillful on hers, his tongue caressing the inside of her lips, and Mia could feel herself melting on the spot, a pleasurable fog engulfing her mind. Before she could completely forget herself, however, he stopped, lifting his head and carefully rolling off her.

“Go,” he said, and there was a wicked smile on his face. “I don’t want you to be late.”

Frustrated, Mia got up and threw a pillow at him. “You’re evil,” she told him. Now she was extremely turned on, and she wouldn’t get a chance to see him for the next few hours. The only thing that made her feel better was the fact that he would suffer equally.

“Just wanted you to hurry back, that’s all,” he said, grinning, and Mia threw another pillow at him before grabbing Maria’s gift and heading out the door.

Review: Roman's Gold by Ann Gimpel

Title: Roman's Gold (Underground Heat #1)
Author: Ann Gimpel
Source: Self Purchased / Author Request (I bought it then got the request before I started)
Genre: Paranormal/Sci Fi Romance
Length: Novella
Release Date: June 10, 2013
Reviewer: Jasmyn

Once respected members of society, shifters are running for their lives.  In a futuristic world where resources are scarce, Kate uses her human form to work as a sex surrogate.  Furious at what looks a lot like genocide for her people, she joins the shifter underground.

Devon's been a cop for a long time.  He has shifter blood, but not enough to change into anything; at least not until the police department insists on a series of infusions to make him better at tracking shifters so they can be imprisoned - or killed.

Devon's latest assignment is Kate.  From the moment he sees her, he can't get her out of his mind.  The line between hunter and hunted thins, blurs, and finally disappears.  Kate and Devon defy the odds.  Will their passions save them or doom them forever?

Roman's Gold has just enough sci fi (hover cars and fancy watch gizmos that do everything) to help set the futuristic stage, but not so much that it takes away from the paranormal romance aspect.  Kate has been living in hiding for years - disguising her shifter heritage to save her life, and protect the underground shifter movement.  Devon is sent by the police to determine if she is a shifter or not, but he can't seem to complete the assignment - it seems like love at first sight.  When Devon realizes the injections that helped him track Kate down also boosted his shifter blood, he realizes he may be on the wrong side of this fight.  But it will be up to Kate to try and push him into changing sides.

Kate is a fiesty little mountain lion (I love cat shifters) that hides refugees for the underground shifter movement.  The only thing I disliked about Kate (and also Devon) is that the beginning of the book has them having sex with other people.  While it is normal (they hadn't met yet) it just sits a little wrong when that happens, but I got over it when their sex was soooo much hotter. There is also some sex that happens while they are shifted.  Ann Gimpel handled this very well, and the scenes are written to show how powerful their love for each other really is.

The story of the Underground Shifter Movement is fantastic.  As more and more shifters are imprisoned and their rights are stripped away for being "non-human" the shifters have decided to unite and try to fight back.  This goal is contantly hovering in the background driving the story forward with the romance helping it all along the way.

ARC Review: Never Deal with Dragons by Lorenda Christensen

Title: Never Deal with Dragons
Author: Lorenda Christensen
Source: Netgalley
Genre: UF/Sci-Fi Romance (Dragon shifters)
Length: Novel
Reviewer: CaroleDee
Pub Date: July 22, 2013 by Carina Press

Consoling a sobbing dragon and serving pig buffets are just part of the job for Myrna Banks. Working for a mediation firm, it's her job to get humans compensated for damages caused by the dragons who now rule. But her "typical" day is interrupted by Trian Chobardan, an old flame who sneaked out of her bed two years ago, taking her heart and a handful of classified documents with him.

Myrna would love to show Trian the door, but he's been sent by North America's reigning dragon lord for help negotiating a truce with a powerful rival to avert war. Myrna agrees to help, even though she'll be stuck with Trian as a partner.

As the two work together, Myrna finds Trian to be surprisingly supportive—and still irresistibly attractive. Though her brain tells her not to forget his betrayal, her body feels differently. When they learn the enemy dragon lord is planning something no one could have imagined, Myrna has to learn who she can trust before she loses not only her heart, but her life.

Ahh, I'm a little confused. Usually stories with misunderstandings drive me absolutely batty. Add the fact that one conversation probably could have fixed 90% of Myrna and Trian's problems and I would usually be pulling my hair out. So why, oh why did I love this book so much? I think it was a mixture of being completely original, pretty darn funny, and it had tons of realistic action.

What do I mean by realistic action? Well, our heroine isn't a trained bad-ass, so while she gets her knocks in (like most heroines in UFs) it's not because she's turned into a ninja master overnight ;) She even uses a few non-conventional weapons along the way. *Don't mess with Myrna. She's deadly with a pen. lol*

Trian, the hero, is all mystery. He sort of pissed me off at the beginning, but you quickly realize that there's more going on with him than meets the eye. Is he the perfect hero at first? Nope. BUT his growth and eventual honesty with Myrna makes their final HEA that much more satisfying.

Never Deal with Dragons is as pretty nifty mix of UF Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and dystopia with a romantic twist. Since there are Dragons some people might want to label it as PNR. BUT there is a very science based beginning for these dragons. Sorry folks, no magic here. I think that the use of Science Fiction as a beginning of our dragons is one of the main things that kept the story fresh. Definitely not something I've read before and thank goodness for that!

If you're looking for something fantastically outside the box pick up Never Deal with Dragons.

Review: The Species Intervention #6609 series by: J.K. Accinni

Series Title: The Species Intervention #6609
Author: J.K. Accinni

About the Author

Everyone asks authors what motivated them to write their latest book. They usually receive a variety of answers. Some wild, some boring, some obvious and some that feel an overriding passion. So I'm going to take a minute to tell you why I wrote the series, Species Intervention #6609.

Let me caution you...this is not to intentionally gross you out. In pursuit of wildlife conservation, I have traveled around the world exploring my passion. Unfortunately, I can no longer deal with the pain that accompanies my exposure to the creatures I love so much. Do you know someone like that? Your friend that refuses to listen when you relate the news how some scum bag across town shot the neighbor's dog in the head and buried him in sand up to his neck. How a 21 year old girl had an argument with her roommate and took her 3 week old kittens and slammed them up against the wall, killing them? I know.... you don't want to read this. And this is mild!

Shockingly, the world across the ocean is even worse. And the Internet has served to acerbate pleasure killings. Now you and your 17 year old ignorant buddies that caught the little monkey, can skin him alive, put him in a pot and proudly show the photos all over the Internet to prove what big boys you are. It's not much different than the big game hunters that travel to South Africa (Or Texas in the good ole USA) to pay $85,000 to shoot a rare white lion and bring its head home to show what big men they are. The perpetual "who has the biggest penis contest." I think that's enough of the atrocity stories. Believe me, I can tell you things that happen in my own state of Florida that will not allow you to sleep at night. Sigh...
There is very little that a single person can do to change Man's evil behavior toward Earth's innocent creatures that have so little...merely their lives. Unreasonably, Man feels the justification to steal that from them too.
Enter Species Intervention. My own way of getting even and exercising some of the pain I feel, hopefully raising awareness and entertaining at the same time. Baby and Echo are my adored enigmatic creatures. My characters all have lives that will intersect in book four, Hive. It will be there that my theme starts to truly emerge to shock and intrigue you. (I sure hope.) It will only be at the end of my current book in progress that "God " will ask himself, "Perhaps it's time to turn this new world I have created over to women to care for."
Would the softer, gentler of our species do a better job? I wonder. What would happen to the men? And what challenges and shocks does the new world present to the survivors of the old one? Pick up this well-reviewed series and discover yourself!
I am a doggy mommy, wildlife nut and supporter, writer, author, world traveler, political junkie and a Survivor wannabe...hear that Jeff Probst?

J. K. Accinni was born and raised in Sussex County before moving to Randolph, New Jersey, where she lived with her husband, five dogs and eight rabbits, all rescued and currently resides in Sarasota Florida. Mrs. Accinni's passion for wildlife conservation has led her all over the world, including three trips to Africa, where ten years ago she and her husband fell in love with a baby elephant named Wendi that had been rescued by the incomparable David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Wendi is the inspiration for the character Tobi , the elephant featured in her fourth book titled Hive.

The character of Caesar is inspired by a real life iconic tiger from Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary in Sarasota. A portion of the proceeds from her third book, Armageddon Cometh, will be donated to the sanctuary in support of the enormous expense required to house and feed the displaced wildlife in their care. Mrs. Accinni invites her readers to visit bigcathabitat.org to view the astounding facility and plan a visit with your family.
Mrs. Accinni also invites you to visit her web page at http://www.speciesintervention.com , where information on The Big Cat Habitat and Gulf Coast Sanctuary can also be viewed. Readers are encouraged to comment about the book or your own creature experiences.
