Indie Romance Convention Author Interview with Lori Brighton

Please welcome Lori Brighton!

~Tell us a bit about yourself
Well, I went to college to become an archaeologist. I’d seen Indiana Jones a few too many times but I realized pretty quickly it was a bit less adventurous than the movies made it seem; it’s more digging in the dirt than being chased by giant boulders. After college I landed a job as a natural science curator. I loved my job, but I’d always had a huge imagination and it just wasn’t fulfilling that aspect of my personality. So…I decided to try and write a romance! Seven long years later (and lots and lots of rejections), I sold two books to Kensington. The pay was crap, and they didn’t recontract me but fortunately self-publishing took off around this time. Now I can say I actually have a career as a writer, which honestly at times I never thought I’d be able to say! I love being able to tell my son that if you work hard and never give up, you can have the life you want!

~Who or what is your writing muse? And what is your favorite environment to write in or conditions?
Well, when I was sixteen I first discovered romance novels. It was a Julie Garwood historical called Guardian Angel. When I read that book I was in awe, I’d never read anything like it! So much romance, love, emotion and adventure! So, I guess you could say her historical romances are what made me want to start writing later in life, and they are definitely still my favorites. Good books are definitely my muse! As for where I write…I’m usually on my couch, but I have a beautiful, wonderful office that I’ve finally finished decorating, so I’m sure I’ll be there much more often.

~Who or what genre do you enjoy reading?
I’ll read any type of romance or young adult. Like my movies, I like romance and adventure and a happily ever after. Honestly, I don’t have much time to read but when I do, I’m usually reading self-help books! Makes me sound like a nutcase, but I’m addicted to them! I wonder if there’s a book for that…
~What are you working on right now?
A lot! I’m the sort of author who works on multiple books at once. If I get bored, or stuck, I switch to another! But at this exact moment I’m frantically trying to get my next historical romance for Amazon Montlake done…To Please a Lady; book 3 in my Seduction Series. I’m working on a short story to go with my self-published series, The Mind Readers. I’ve got two other paranormal young adult books in the work, as well as a young adult romance (no paranormal). And yes, I’m hoping to get them all out in 2013! Okay, maybe I am a nutcase.

Fun Questions:
Fave Band or singer: I don’t think I have a favorite. I’ll listen to anything from Tom Petty, to Enya, to Classical, to The Lumineers. My husband has Satellite Radio in his car and my favorite station is called Coffee House, so I suppose I tend toward Indie bands.

Dog or Cat: Honestly the best pet I’ve ever had was our dog who died last year
L But if I had to choose, it would be cats! Cats leave you alone! They do their own thing, which I appreciate.
Leather or Denim: The idea of leather sounds sexy, but honestly denim.

Heels or Flip Flops: Well, again I like the idea of heels, but let’s face it, I’m in my PJ’s most days so it’s Flip Flops for me.

Wine or Beer: Neither! I hate the taste of alcohol! I love pop (as we call it from the area in the Midwest where I’m from) but I’m trying not to drink it as it’s so bad for the body!

Mountain Top or Ocean Side: I love all nature! But definitely ocean! I love the mystery of the beach. You don’t know what you’ll see or find. In fact, we’re trying to move toward the beach now! Fingers crossed someday soon!

Boxer, breifs, or commando for your hero: Boxer-briefs!

Thanks so much for having me!

My Review:

In all fairness I have to say this before you read my review. I read this 548 page book on my computer and I normally stick with novellas or a book around 300 pgs. So because of the length I am afraid it has affected my reading and reviewing of this book. I can only sit on my chair and read for so long then I am antsy and want to move on, so please keep this in my while reading this review.

Wild desire is a very dangerous sexy adventure set in India. I found the story fell in the middle for me. I liked it yet, I didn’t like it. I really liked the adventure, the India setting and the paranormal elements in the story. The author also placed a few surprises along the way. What I didn’t care for was the back and forth relationship between the hero and heroine and the story did drag. Overall this is a good read, but one you can sit down and go back to later. I will say for those that loves emotional main characters problems, this will be right up your ally.

Beatrice leaves her castle to visit her cousin Leo and his new wife Ella. She never expected to be left alone with a madman Colin, He irritates her to no end and on top of that they have men trying to kill them. So she gets pulled in to an adventure that has all kinds of danger. She is scarred and tries her best to help. The thing is are they after him or her? He has special powers, but she has special blood. While these two are running for their lives they both find an attraction between for other. They just fight it the whole way.

Teaser
You fainted.
He scoffed, pushing up onto his elbows. Don‘t be ridiculous. I‘m a man and an American, we don‘t faint.
She lifted one dark brow and leaned back on her heels. Well, then you took a nap, a very deep, very long nap.

This book is brilliant, thrilling and hot. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough, I had to find out who was behind it all and why. I loved the way the author brings everything together it leaves you satisfied. This is an historical with a touch of paranormal. There is a nice happy ever after, but there is so much more to the story and I cant wait for the next book to read more about this adventure. You get a hot sexual tension, romance, mystery, excitement, and great characters, even the villains and non stop adventure once it starts.

I am not going to spoil much because this is such a great book you need to try it yourself. Ella’s different, she has a special gift that no one knows, her parents died while she was young. Now she has been hired to help refine Leo. The thing is Leo doesn’t want to be refined, he wants to find out who killed his parents.

Leo is damaged after living in the jungle of India at such a young age for so long. He still wants to catch his parents killer and now he has to deal with a woman that turns him on in ways he doesn’t want. How is he going to get through this with out compromising her innocence.

The paranormal part is Ella special gift even though it a focus part of the book it’s a part that sometimes you don’t even relies its there.

I loved both Leo and Ella. They both fit so well together and are destined to be together. I suggest this book to anyone who loves historical and paranormal romance.

Wild Desire will be released March 2011

Interview and giveaway with author Lori Brighton

Please welcome Lori Brighton author of The Ghost Hunter. I hope you guys enjoy the interview and please check out The Ghost Hunter I really enjoyed it.

Laurie-Lori, thanks so much for doing this interview. Would you please tell us a little about yourself?

Lori-Thanks for having me! I started reading romance when I was a teenager and I became obsessed! Not only with the wonderful emotional aspects of the books, but with the suspense and adventure. Wanting to do something just as adventurous, I went to school for Archaeology/Anthropology. I ended up working in a museum as a natural science curator. When we moved, I had to quit and museum jobs are hard to find. I’d always had a huge imagination and so with time on my hands I decided to try and write down one of those stories I’d been imagining. It took me over seven years to get published. Lot’s of rejection and heartache. But those stories wouldn’t leave me alone, so I continued to try.

Laurie-What has been the hardest thing to cross in writing?

Lori- Well, getting published is incredibly hard. For most people it takes years and many rejections. Publishers are very picky, and rightly so, about what they want. Now that more people are self publishing, forgoing publishers in New York, it’s more about promoting. A person can spend hours a day trying to figure out ways to get their book into the hands of readers. It’s rather exhausting. So after your book is published, you then have to worry about sales numbers and what your readers will think of the book.

But the hardest thing is trying not to let rejections and bad reviews get you down; to write for the joy of writing.

Laurie-Now that you’re selling books what’s become you favorite thing to do?

Lori-Well, when you see your book available there is an amazing feeling of accomplishment.

But best of all are the people I’ve met since becoming an author. Bloggers who take time out to help me promote, and readers who email to tell me they enjoyed my book. I’ve met so many wonderful people from all over the world.

Now I have had the privilege to read your Ghost Hunter and loved it. Laurie-What I really loved was your idea of an Angel warrior having to have a seer to capture the ghost, would you tell us more about this? And are you planning on writing more?

Lori-When you write a book there has to be some way to connect plot and characters, there has to be a reason for things. I needed a reason for Cristian (my hero) and Ashley (the heroine) to be connected on a deep level. Somehow I came up with the Seers and Angels working together; forced together really.

As for if there will be another book, I’d love to write a sequel with Devon (who is a secondary character) as the hero. But that will depend on how well The Ghost Hunter does.

Laurie-What prompted you to write a ghost book with a demon in the basement?

Lori-I came up first with the idea of a book about a woman inheriting a mansion that is haunted while on the Haunted Mansion ride at Disney World. As for the demon part, I can’t remember how that came about! Some writers plan, in detail, their books before they write. Others just write. I just write. So when something comes to me, it goes into the book. Somehow it all comes together in the end.

Laurie-What do you do for fun when you’re not writing?

Lori-I love television and movies! Fewer movies now that I have a child. Because I spend so much time on the computer, reading my own books, sometimes I’d rather watch T.V. than read. I know, terrible thing to say!

As a family we like to go hiking and traveling. We just got back from St. Augustine, Florida. It was amazing! A new favorite place.

Laurie-What are some of your favorite books?

Lori-I’ll tell you a horrible, horrible secret…

I’d rather watch the movie than read the book. lol. When I was a kid I loved Anne of Green Gables and Chronicles of Narnia books. Both have wonderful movies. I’d definitely rather watch either Pride and Prejudice movie rather than read the book. Same with the Harry Potter books, love them, but would rather watch the movie.

As for books that haven’t been made into movies…anything Julie Garwood. She was the first romance author I read and I love her historicals!

Laurie-Now that you have written historical and paranormal do you have a favorite? And was either one easier to write?

Lori-Historicals are more difficult because there’s usually more research involved. I don’t have a favorite. If I’m writing a historical I usually want to write a contemporary. If I’m writing a contemporary I’m longing for historical. lol. The grass is always greener…

Laurie-You have a book called Wild Desire coming out March 2011, can you share some of that story with us?

Lori-Sure! Wild Desire is the second book in a series. The first book, Wild Heart, is available on Amazon as an Ebook or printed book. It may also still be at some bookstores. But you can read Wild Desire without reading Wild Heart. Wild Heart is a bit darker while Wild Desire is more adventurous. Below is the blurb for Wild Desire:

In what feels like a moment, Beatrice Edmund goes from being a proper lady cooped up in a stuffy Scottish castle to traveling miles from anything she’s ever known, in the midst of the wildest adventure of her life. And at the center of that adventure is the most infuriating, puzzling scoundrel on earth. She cannot take her eyes off him.

Colin Finch cannot deny he’s drawn to Beatrice—but lust is all he could possibly feel for the sharp-tongued minx. Still, if there’s a chance she can help him stop the madman he pursues, he must withstand her obvious disapproval. Yet withstanding the longing he feels for her is growing more troublesome by the second… And Colin has never been terribly good at staying out of trouble…

Laurie-Can you tell us some of what to expect next?

Lori-Well, I have a young adult book that is with two editors. They’ve had it awhile. It’s one of the pitfalls of publishing, it can take forever to hear back from an editor if they want your book. If they reject it, I’ll publish it myself on Amazon Kindle. So in some format, it will be available.

Wild Desire will be in stores in March and I’m really looking forward to that.

As for what book I’ll work on next, I have plenty of ideas, but probably a contemporary paranormal romance I started awhile back. Like The Ghost Hunter it’s a bit more unique and different than many of the paranormal books out there.

Fun questions

Laurie-Do you have a favorite pair of shoes? And do you have a truck load of them or not? LOL.

Lori- stay home so I’m usually wearing no shoes or tennis shoes. lol. Pretty glamorous! I love heels, but on the rare chance I do wear them, they kill my feet because I’m not used to them. I love purses more. A friend of mine said that she loved shoes and purses because it didn’t matter how much weight you gained, you could still use them. So true.

Laurie-What is your favorite color?

Lori-Hmm, I don’t know. I love all colors. If I had to choose, maybe green? Just reminds me of life and lushness 

Laurie-Do you have any pets? If so what?

Lori-Yes, we have a dog and a cat. Years ago we lived out in the country and one day a Golden Retriever showed up at our house. After no one claimed him, we took him in. He’s awesome. A super sweet dog. Everyone loves him. Our cat belonged to someone else and she had to get rid of her, so we took her in. For the first three years, she wouldn’t come downstairs. lol. She hated our dog. Only took about 6 years and I think she’s finally accepting him… reluctantly.

Laurie-Do you have a favorite music band? And what song do you like best from them?

Lori-I don’t have a favorite band, I like a little of everything. In the city where I live they have a radio channel called Dave, after Dave Matthews and they play music along that lines. That would probably be the type of music I listen to the most. But I’m usually watching television rather than listening to music.

My Review

Lori Brighton is talented and creative writer. This one kept me on edge wanting to know what was going to happen next. I love all the paranormal she has going on in this book. I was very happy that is wasn’t like most ghost hunters I have seen on TV or read about. It was fresh and exciting. Here is what you get action, exorcism, spell casting sword fighting, body passions, twist and turns, surprises and a great cast of characters. I hope to read more about this cast in the future.

OMG, I have to say poor Ashley she never seen what was coming when she walked into her new owned old pub, she truly went for a exciting and deadly ride. If it wasn’t ghost it was the angel warriors messing with her, then add the rest of the towns witches, vampire, werewolf and the big demon that lives in her basement whew, like I said she never seen it coming. Ashley is strong and is ready to fight for what is hers.

Cristian is a angel warrior that helps passes ghost to the other side, but he has to have a seer to do so. He already knows Ashley and her family and wants to buy her out of her pub house, but she refuses. So he takes matters in his own hands and moves in.

My only downside was I really would have love to read more of Cristian
And Ashley working together instead of separated, it was like it took from the romance part for me.
