Inherited Damnation Series by Claire Ashgrove - Guest Post and Giveaway

Redeeming the Unredeemable

Hi all!  Thanks for having me here today and listening to a little about Marked for Death, the last book in the Inherited Damnation series…and my absolute favorite book of them all.  If you’re just catching this series, you can check out the first book free – Cursed to Kill.

So, around book four, my editor said to me that I was going to have a hell of a task in redeeming Taran, the darkest sibling of the bunch.  To give you an idea what she felt I was up against, here’s what he’d done so far:
pretty much attacked one of the heroines
  • he killed innocent animals
  • he hates his entire family
  • he was stalking some woman in France

Quite the daunting task, honestly.  But hey, I’m always up for a challenge!

As I piddled along, the answer to how I could pull this off was to give him a reason for being so dark and so loathesome.  Which meant something pretty nasty had to push gears already in motion, into full-tilt baddness.  The answer?  His curse.

You probably know by now that the entire family is cursed to kill whomever they give their hearts to. And Taran fell head over heels for a witch and suffered the worst fate—she died by his hand.  In that death, in the torture he suffered over knowing he killed the woman he loved and couldn’t stop himself, I found the sympathetic thread.  Which I believe is the core of redeeming any darker character.

Can you imagine what it must feel like to be unable to stop yourself, to have no physical control over what you know is rationally wrong and horrific, and to murder the one person you can’t envision living without?  Then, to top it off, there’s no death for you.  No jury or life sentence.  No suicide.  You must continue on, because you’re immortal.  And you can’t escape.

Unless you get your hands on one of your mother’s ancient scrolls that will force you to stand before the ancestors, who will judge whether you return to life or die eternally.

So who the heck wouldn’t do everything under the sun to insure you weren’t coming back to relive that moment, that utter loss, day in and day out?  I sure would.

I think this added another level of depth to Taran.  Previously, we never saw his thoughts; only his actions, and several of his actions we heard about second-hand.  For those of you’ve who’ve been following along, as you get into Marked for Death, you’ll be able to look back and see those scenes in a different perspective.

And then there’s one character who sort of marries the entire concept of being alone.  A cat Taran very much cares about, but who can’t stand him.  That poor cat is Taran’s judge, jury, and executioner.

Of course, it’s never quite as simple as one element.  There are many other smaller areas where Taran’s past influences him.  The issues with his family run deep and definitely scar.  I’m sure some of you will relate to the struggles he faces with his siblings, curse aside.  And I’m pretty sure there are some twists and surprises that you won’t anticipate.  All of which were amazingly fun to write and develop.

I hope you’ll check it out.  Meanwhile, please leave your thoughts below:  what would you do in his position?  How would you cope with the horror you created?

I really loved Fintan.  Perhaps it is because of his academia side with his scrolls and knowledge of history, but he was just a really great character. Beth isa great match for him. Both were incredibly well developed with history and emotions that really ran deep. Beth is denying herself and what she really wants to follow a dream that isn't hers. But Fintan is willing to try anything to make her see what's really there and embrace it.

The ties to the Selbovae Celt past were a very nice touch and really helped give me a better understanding of the family history. Beth history is a very important part of the story and it was a bit of a surprise to see just how much it affected her. We have a nasty sibling living with Fintan that really does her best to ruin everything - and actually comes very close! They had me worried for awhile about how it was all going to work out right!

I think this couple may have been my favorite so far, and the setting was just about perfect.

I love when a "bad guy" falls in love.  They make such a great story as they learn to be better people and come to grips with their past.  Belen is not your traditional bad boy.  He really does do some bad things, and one of those bad things sets off the chain of events that leads to his eventual redemption.

Belen was a very interesting character.  He chooses to follow his darker side.  He thinks his lighter side is tainted by his mother's abandonment and he walks away from it.  When this decisions puts Faith in danger because of his actions, he begins to second guess everything he's done.  The catch, he really doesn't want to be a better person at first.  It was great!

Seeing Belen with Faith was like watching a different person than when he was with everyone else.  She really was his angel and showed him how powerful good could really be.  He is determined to walk away from it all, but when his love puts her life in danger, he needs to make the final decision of whether or not her life is worth his immortality.

There was quite a nice little twist in this story that only made it work even better.  Again, I loved the fact that it wasn't love or lust at first sight.  The characters had a history that the story really built on and it adds a layer of reality to a paranormal that makes it work so well.

I am still very much loving the concept behind theses stories.  The perfect mix of good and evil captured in 8 siblings - each having to choose which way they want to go.  Rhiannon has chosen the good.  She's a healer and tries hard to avoid situations that may allow her darker side to emerge.    But you can't really avoid falling in love.  I like that the characters are falling in love with people that are already a part of their lives.  It makes the love seem more true and long-lasting than if they were love at first sight.

I had a harder time connecting to Mick.  He was just too "hard" for my taste.  Not that he wasn't well written - he has an amazing story and it's very well developed - he just wasn't my type.  I think his reaction to some of the events that happened during the "camping trip" were fantastic.  His outrage and disbelief were so believable and I really felt his confusion and betrayal.

This seemed a bit darker than book one - but I can't put my finger on why.  I really enjoyed getting to know another sibling, and we get a fairly good look at another, as well some visitors from book one.  I think as the series goes on and the father gets more pissy things are going to get very interesting.

If Miranda is to survive, she must uncover the truth and free his darkened soul.

I loved the premise behind this series. This history of Cian (which is a really cool name) and his sibling was interesting and I loved learning more about all of them. Cian would do anything to protect the woman he loves from himself. The evil side of his nature constantly battling with the good - with Miranda's life on the line.

When an ancient spell is uncovered that could potentially release him from this curse, he finds himself at odds with his demon father and even a few of his brothers and sisters. There was a lot of internal struggle in the book - which was a nice change of pace for a paranormal. It wasn't all physical fighting and battling and I enjoyed every minute of his mental struggle.

The ending was beautiful. My only complaint was that I wish I had understood more about the family dynamics. While we get to meet his siblings, I did not get a chance to really know them. As a result, many of them blended into one. I'm hoping that in future stories I get to know them better because they all sound fascinating.

We would like to welcome Claire Ashgove and her new book Before the Storm - recently reviewed on Bitten by Romance HERE.  She's here to share with us just what makes a hero.  To visit more stops on her tour see the tour schedule HERE.

What Makes A Hero?

Hi everybody!  Thanks for letting me stop in today and share my new Urban Fantasy, Before the Storm!   I thought we’d talk heroes for a minute or two.

Three Things That Define A Hero

1.  Noble – This doesn’t mean he hails from royalty.  But at the heart of what he is, the decisions he makes are noble.  Usually this involves some degree of self-sacrifice, and that only makes him more appealing.  Particularly if that sacrifice somehow ties into bettering the heroine.

2.  Courageous – He may not be physically fighting off the bad guys, but he’s unafraid to tackle life head on.  He doesn’t wait for the world to act upon him, rather he acts upon the world.  He’s unafraid, but not foolishly risky.  He believes he can conquer any obstacle, and at the very least, he’s willing to give it a try.  Even better, when he’s defending the heroine, be that from the creepy creature intent on tearing out her heart or killing the spider that’s in her bathtub.

3.  Handsome In His Own Right – He doesn’t need to be model perfect or turn every feminine head.  But there’s something about him – maybe it’s his manner of acting, or the simple light shining in his eyes – that is irresistible.  Even his scars can be attractive when tempered with the right attitude.

So all that said, here’s a quick list of my Top 5 Favorite Fiction Heroes.  I’d love to know your thoughts (and your five!) if you’d share them in the comments below!

            a.  Dr. Ethan Powell (from Instinct, played by Sir Anthony Hopkins)
            b.  Kvothe (from The Name of the Wind, by Patrick Rothfuss)
            c.  Aragorn (from LOTR)
            d.  Hatter (from Alice, miniseries)
            e.  Ranulf Fitz Hugh (from Defy Not the Heart, by Johanna Lindsey)

Thanks again for having me today!  I can’t wait to hear your responses.  There are so many amazing heroes in romance, and fiction, it’s bound to be entertaining.

There is a whole lot of good stuff going on in this book.  Halle has been on her own for years - ever since she called down a storm and killed her father.  She is a very hard person with quite a huge chip on her shoulder.  At first I didn't really like her - but after she met Kale and realized that she wasn't some big freak of nature, she became more of a person that I really enjoyed.  Her past attitude was quite understandable as more of her history becomes clear.

But her new family isn't everything they are making themselves out to be.  So when Halle realizes it she is far from happy.  With powers that no one seems to completely understand, she strikes off on her own only to find herself in way over her head.

I loved the lore that was built into this world.  With such a deep history at its foundation it was very easy to love it.  There was tons of action that got really exciting and tense - both magic and physically.  This book had a taste of everything I look for in a good paranormal.  I only wish I had liked Halle better the beginning,
