Creating the world of the Vampire Erotic Theatre romance series

It’s wonderful to be back here at Bitten by Paranormal Romance for the next stop in my Vampirerotique Summer Book Tour.

Today, I’m going to talk about creating the world of my Vampire Erotic Theatre romance series.

The thing I love most about writing vampire romances is that I get to play with a societal structure and I often get to really flex my world-building skills. I can’t help it. Whenever I write a vampire romance, I have to dream up a different sort of society, a world in which they live with laws they abide or break, people they either look up to or down on, and other fascinating aspects. It’s an intrinsic part of my vampire worlds and as important to me as what sort of vampire I’m writing.

Vampires are ageless. They live for centuries if not millennia, so it makes sense to me that they would have a very structured society that might seem antiquated to humans and perhaps a social divide too. You have to consider that they’re from a different time. When they were raised (or turned, but more about that later) it was probably in a very different world to our modern one, a time when humans had a very structured society too. The divide in modern human society is less noticeable than the one that existed a century or more ago. The divide in vampire society in this world isn’t.

What inspired the writing of Abigail Jones?

I had just finished writing Her Husband’s Harlot, the first in my erotic Regency series, and I was looking for a new creative challenge. While I am a historical reader at heart, I do love paranormals, and I thought, Why not combine the two? The two genres have a lot in common, I think, in terms of the world building and levels of eroticism (I like to read and write hot!); in fact, when you examine the "horrid" or "sensation" novels of the 1800's, with the emphasis on the gothic supernatural, the connection between the two becomes quite obvious.

So I drew upon one of my favorite gothic stories of all time, Jane Eyre, and created Abigail Jones, a sheltered young woman who is cursed with terrifying erotic visions. When her aunt dies, Abby goes to work at Hope End, a gothic castle, and catches the eye of its mysterious master, Lord Huxton … who just happens to lead a secret life as a demon slayer. As the passion between them blazes, Abby comes to a startling realization: her visions and his quest for vengeance are intricately linked, and they will have to battle the ultimate evil together if their world—and their love—are to survive.

Indie romance convention

I am excited to share some news with you I will be hosting an indie (what most people call self-publishers) romance convention next year. I have toyed with this idea in my head for over 2 years because I feel the indie world needs something for them and their readers. I had the privilege to share this idea to Gabrielle Bisset, Tina Flosom and Danielle Blanchard this year and they really liked it. So I decided I would give it a try. I am in the process of getting everything together.  As of right now I have the date, hotel, blog and a few authors. You’re more than welcome to join the blog and follow the progress, but the site won’t officially launch until October.
