Caves – Some of the World’s Most Naturally Creepy Places

Paranormal romance fans understand creepy.  They like creepy.  A little bit, anyway.

But creepy, in paranormal terms, is something that is manufactured by ghouls, goblins, demons and spirits…and authors with very good imaginations.

Caves, though…caves in their natural state are the creepiest and most frightening places you can find, and you don’t need a souped up scary movie soundtrack to enhance the sensations.

Cavers – people who like to climb down into the bowels of the Earth – or Potholers, as they’re also called – have got nerves of steel and a brain that is wired slightly differently from the average human.  They have to have, because caves are not pleasant places.

Let me explain.

There’s possibly a good chance you’ve been in one or two caves in your lifetime.  Tourist locations open to the public, where you can walk in and have a look around at the stalactites and stalagmites, while a tour guide or self-guided presentation tells you about how old the cave and the fossils found inside it are.

It’s fascinating and chilly and you’re pretty glad to get out into the sunshine at the end.

Fair summary?

These sorts of caves that have been opened to the public are the MacDonalds version of caves.  They’ve been retailed and tamed to the point of inoffensiveness.  Access to the cave is paved over, made safe and accessible to all.  Lights are strung up and in some cases, air conditioning pumped in.  The cave floor itself is swept smooth, and paths and steps built and poured, while hand rails are constructed to ensure you have something to cling to as you climb up and down.

If there are any pockets of offensive or dangerous gas, noxious water, hot water, or too cold water, they’re removed or diverted.  Tourists are kept away from unstable areas where cave-ins are possible, or the floor is simply too difficult to walk across (until concrete paths can be poured).

The flip side to all the guiderails and paths and lighting is that while the human tourists are being shepherded carefully along narrowly defined routes, the impact on the natural flaura and fauna is being kept to a minimum.
But what humans don’t see, with all that careful shepherding, is what a cave is really like, without its make-up on.

You might tend to think of a cave like you see them in the movies and on TV; with conveniently flat, sandy floors, and tunnels that run horizontally to provide access to the main chambers.

Caves are nothing like that in reality.  They’re pitch black, unlit spaces in the earth where shifts in tectonic plates left gaps and holes in the rock and earth.  Time, water and erosion did the rest, and what you’re left with is fantastically shaped spaces that often have no identifiable “floor” at all, or walls, or a roof.  When you make your way through them, you begin to understand how the continents were formed and are still shifting and shrugging every now and again…and how truly insignificant humans are, with all their surface activity.

The toe of land at the bottom of Western Australia (where it says Cape Leewin on the map) is riddled with caves.  Some of them have been commercialized just like I described at the beginning of this post.  Some of the caves are well known only the local pot-holers.   But there are more areas deep inside the cliffs and earth of Margaret River than have ever been discovered.

It’s that raw opening in the centre of the earth feeling that I tried to convey in Terror Stash.  There is one scene in particular where the three main characters face what is called a “tight squeeze” in caving terms.

See if it creeps you out.  And not a ghost in sight.

~Tell us a bit about yourself:

Love to dance and do it all the time, while I’m walking, cooking, playing with my dogs, love rock n roll and hot country music.
As far as who am I as an author, well, I have been an author for over 25 years, and have published over 40 mass market bestsellers for Random House/Ballantine, Zebra and Doubleday.

After we moved to NC from NY, I took some time off, a whole lot of time off, while we played with our horses and got
Involved with other ventures.

Because a writer, at least this writer, will write no matter what other things I was doing, I wrote for myself and shelved it.
Got interested in paranormal and my Legend series was born. This time, a new world existed—the world of ebooks, and I decided to go Indie.

~Who or what is your writing muse?
And what is your favorite environment to write in or conditions?

Rock n Roll is my muse. Sends me off into another world where ideas bombard me. I like to
write in my office without any distractions as I enter the world I create and interact with my people.

~Who or what genre do you enjoy reading?

I love paranormal romance, especially, Karen Marie Moning. Also love Patterson and his Alex Cross. Love Koontz and S.King and Nora Roberts. I’m all over the board. Oh, and yes, I loved the Twilight series, and Harry Potter.

~What are you working on right now?

The continuation of my Through Time Series and it is called Through Time-Slamming.

Fun Questions:

Dog or Cat?    well, that is hard. If I have to choose, it is a dog, but I love cats and always had a cat until we lost our old Patchy and he was over twenty years old when he called it quits.

Leather or Denim?  again, depends on the time and the place, cuz I so love leather and lace!

Heels or Flip Flops?  neither, ha, sandals.

Wine or Beer?  Wine for me, and pina colada, and chocolate martini!

Mountain Top or Ocean Side?  Mountain top with Ocean a close second.

Boxer, breifs, or commando for your hero?   my hero, hmmm most of them like to go naked, but when they wear underwear, it is black boxers.

Milesian immortal Chancemont LeBlanc is determined to avenge his sister’s death at the hands of Dark Prince Pestale, who remains free after the war between the Seelie Fae and the Dark Fae. Nothing will stop Chance from fulfilling his mission of vengeance, not even the time barrier.
The queen of the Seelie Fae has other ideas, however, and she sends Princess Royce to make sure Pestale is captured, not killed. Royce would rather spend time with the human family she has grown to love, but she has broken the rules one time too many, and Queen Aaibhe wants her to grow up and act like the Seelie royal she is!
Royce doesn’t want to be part of Chance’s team. He most definitely doesn’t want her on his team, and from the start—fireworks.
Chance has Pestale on the run, but after seeing the beautiful princess with the flaming red hair, Pestale has decided Royce must be his.

Of course, the more Nexi runs toward revenge, the more she needs Kyden’s aid, and as she grows into her power and confidence, so does his desire to protect her. The only problem? She’d rather he dropped dead.

But when a vampire paints a bull’s-eye on Nexi’s back, she’s hard-pressed to deny Kyden and the help he’s offering. Even if it means getting her revenge will be a little bit harder. At least it will still be as sweet.

It's her wedding day and there is no groom in sight.  But why should Amelia Brice be surprised?  Hiram, Lord Friar is known for having no gentleman's honor to speak of and his jilting her on their wedding day makes it official.

Ejijah Banks cannot allow his childhood friend to continue to be shamed this way.  It's more than an hour past the time the wedding was to start, and that bounder still hasn't shown up.  Unable to sit still a second longer, Elijah does the only that that seems logical from where he stands: kidnap the bride and take her to Gretna Green in order to escape this scandal with one far more forgiving for a young lady's reputation.

So then why does his new bride seem angry with him and rebuff his advances?

Elijah is the gentleman she'd always hoped to marry, but though he was merely the third son of a baron and she the daughter of an earl, she'd never felt worthy of someone like him.  Especially now.  Try as she might, she cannot find the words to tell him of her situation and ruin the good fortune that has befallen her, but neither can she keep the truth from him.

But when Lord Friar threatens to reveal her secret, it's up to Elijah to save her from public humiliation once more by revealing a few of his own...

His Jilted Bride was a fun walk through Regency era England.  Amelia is a vibrant and beautiful character that believes she has a deep secret  - one that she must find a way to tell Elijah.  Elijah is not only her husband now, but has been her friend for as long as she can remember.  I very much admire Amelia for her morals and sticking to her beliefs - and even though she struggles to tell her secret, it's obvious that she wants to and just doesn't know how.

Young Elijah ran from Amelia and her feelings as a boy, and now regrets every single minute of it.  When he sees the woman Amelia has become, he knows that they were meant to be together.  But he has a secret as well - one that he can't reveal just yet.

Watching the two characters become comfortable around each other was a wonderful experience.  The best way I can think of to describe this book is "fun".  There is a bit of excitement, a lot of romance, and many enjoyable pages.  It is not necessary to read the first two in the series in order to have fun reading this one.

About Vampire Forgotten:

Forgotten in the mountains of Romania. Forced to live a life he didn't choose. Suffering the daily pain of loneliness. Spending an eternity without the touch of a woman's hand.
Though damned as a vampire, Rhad Valentine has been given what some might call the gift of psychic sight. He sees it as a constant reminder of real life going on without him - a life he cannot live.
Mischa Bonovich is on a desperate mission to find her missing sister, Rianna. Led to the mountains of her homeland by the faint call of Rianna's voice, Mischa needs Rhad's gift and his strength.
Wild hunger, both foreign and welcome, drives Rhad to his knees. He'd never held a woman so soft. Kissed one so responsive. And in spite of his inner protests, he'll do anything to help her. Anything to feel just one more touch of her hand.
In the dark forests of Romania, Rhad's desire won't be quenched until he tastes what only Mischa can offer, but first, he must save her from a man who has nothing to lose. A man who holds a deadly secret that could tear Mischa from Rhad's arms before love can happen.
About Rachel

I started writing years ago, and my first attempt was a contemporary romance that will never see the light of day. I think I may even have thrown it away by now. It was absolutely horrific as I knew nothing about well…anything to do with writing.
After that, I started writing fantasy romances about wizards and wizards, and once those took off, I segued to paranormal romances (hello, vampires and ghosts) and romantic suspense. I also write articles for various magazines, including The Writer’s Journal, Writer’s Magazine, Writer’s Weekly, Writing for Dollars, Absolute Write, and Funds for Writers.
I’m fortunate to make my home in historical Charleston, South Carolina. Beautiful city. Beautiful people. When I’m not writing, I love to read, create videos, keep Target in business, play visitor in my city, and drink lots of coffee.

In Honor of Henry Ford

In honor of Henry Ford who gave us the assembly line and the muscle car.

SALUTE!!!!!!!!!

Henry Ford dies and goes to heaven. At the gates, an angel tells Ford, "Well, you've been such a good guy and your invention, the assembly line for the automobile, changed the world. As a reward, you can hang out with anyone you want to in Heaven."

Ford thinks about it and says, "I wanna hang out with God, Himself." The befeathered fellow at the gate takes Ford to the Throne Room and introduces him to God. Ford then asks God, "Hey, aren't You the inventor of Woman?" God says, "Ah, yes." "Well," says Ford, “You have some major design flaws in Your invention:

l. There's too much front end protrusion
2. It chatters at high speeds
3. The rear end wobbles too much, and
4. The intake is placed too close to the exhaust."

"Hmmm..." replies God, "hold on." God goes to the Celestial Supercomputer, types in a few keystrokes, and waits for the result.

The computer prints out a slip of paper and God reads it.  "It may be that My invention is flawed," God replies to Henry Ford, "but according to My Computer, more men are riding My invention than yours."

A few helpful tips on reviewing

Reviewing: I wanted to post some helpful tips to start readers out in reviewing. I keep seeing so many that thinks re-telling the story is reviewing. Remember you’re not doing a book report as you did in school; you’re doing a critical analysis on what you just read.

Here are a few helpful things you can address when you’re reviewing a book.

The whole story: Did you like it or not? Why did you like it or not?

POV’S? Was it first person, second persons or third persons? You’d be amazed some people don’t like reading first persons POV.

Who is the attending audience for the book?

Would building: Was it easy to understand or not?

The characters: Did you like them or not? Why did you like them or not?

Tell some about how you pictured the hero and heroine. Like were they strong, sloppy, or just mean?

Other characters: Did you like them or not? Why did you like them or not?

Was the sex hot or not? What did you like about it or not? Was it too much and why was it too much. Was there taboo things in there you know others won’t like or will like.

Did the setting draw you in and why?

Was there too much story being told and not enough romance?

Make sure you keep your word count down as much as you can. Good rule is under 500 words. Just keep in mind people doesn't have all day to read a book before they get to the book.

Villains: I love a good evil villain, so tell me some of what the villain was like without spoilers.

Would you recommend the book or not?

Most of all, please don’t give out spoilers unless it’s necessary.

You don’t have to do everything listed above but this is a good start. Basically you need to sit back and think about the book you just read and then start writing your feelings. Now, if it’s a book you really hated, than I do suggest thinking about it a few days before you write the review because sometime things will settle in your mind and you just might start liking the things you hated, if not just be kind. Remember to have respect while you write your review,  you have no clue how many hours or how much money that author put into that book, besides someone else might just like it. I have bought a many books others didn’t like and loved it.
