Guest romance author Danica Winters

Please welcome Danica Winters!

Happy New Year!

This week is the week for resolutions and new beginnings.  I have a series of resolutions (as I always do) I will write more, weigh less (writing is not easy on the waist line), and I will spend more quality time with the family.  I am like every other woman—filled with goals, aspirations and dreams to be the most perfect version of myself (and men wonder why we are so hard on ourselves).

I know I will fail at some of my goals, I tend to allocate for a little regression.  I may not lose the five (alright, fifteen) pounds I would like to lose, but I have accomplished one of my dreams.  It has taken years and there has been hidden pits filled with self-doubt and self-pity.  There have been days filled with so much greatness it’s hard to believe it is my life.  In the last few years I have become a published, and somewhat well-known, author.

And it all started with a simple goal—one little resolution changed my entire life.  It was simple, write a little bit every day and see if I could write a book.  I wasn’t an English major, a librarian, or a teacher (though I envy all of those educational backgrounds); instead I have my degree in Anthropology (with an emphasis in Archeology).  I was just a normal woman, looking for a change, and filled with a dream.

This has in no way been an easy undertaking (like I said it has taken years—and will take many years to come).  There have been many more rejection letters than fan letters and acceptance letters combined.

This week marks a momentous occasion in the life of an author—this week (December 31st) my sixth book was published entitled, The Nymph’s Labyrinth through Crimson Romance.  I couldn’t be happier.  This book is the first in The Nymph Series, a three+ book collection.  I am in the editing stages of the second book entitled, Montana Mustangs, which will be available later this year.

The Nymph’s Labyrinth is the book that was in my heart.  The book I had to write because of my Archeology-loving background.  To me there are few things more fun than sitting in the bottom of a hole, dirty, sweat-covered, and searching for things that haven’t been seen or touched for thousands of years.

The shadows of her past could destroy their future.

Green Pines, Book 1

Eden Green can’t remember a time she didn’t believe in monsters—her cousin was born one. Her family’s dark past casts a long shadow, making it hard to make friends and harder to commit to a lover. She lives a quiet life in small-town Clover, Tennessee, but she’s always waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Tired of the city packs’ corruption, yet too alpha to be a subordinate in a sanctuary town, Jay Ancheta satisfies his need to protect by serving as Clover’s Chief of Police. As much as he’s drawn to Eden, he can’t offer forever to a woman who doesn’t know what he is—or trust himself to let her go after one taste.

When Eden’s cousin and his battered pack stagger into town, their tormentors hard on their heels, Eden is bitten in the chaos. Now Jay not only has a traumatized pack to deal with, but a newly turned wolf with enough hungry alpha power to consume them both.

With their combined strength, they can create a new sanctuary—if their passion can survive the ghosts of the Green family’s legacy.

Warning: Contains a newly turned werewolf heroine who enjoys a little rough dominance in bed and a badass alpha wolf hero who’ll fight bad guys, ghosts and even the past to protect what’s his. Be prepared for violence, death and heartbreak on the way to a happily ever after.

Character Interview with Sam Cheever characters Draigh and Ardith

Draigh and Ardith Interview

Good morning! I'm Sabrina Michaels, Paranormal News Network. Today, I'm really excited to be interviewing the two people who are going to save the world from being overrun by horrible, nasty zombies. And with the possibility that the apocalypse might be coming any day now, Ardith and Draigh may turn out to be good people to know. How are you two today?
Ardith: Great, awesome really.
Draigh: I'm fine. I'd be better if I were out doing my job. That witch is creating more zombies for her army as we speak.
Oh, okay we'll talk fast. First off, can you tell me about your two organizations. You're both witches of a sort, is that correct?
Ardith: I'm an Epoch Mage, actually. We're able to travel through time to manage magical situations.
How exciting. The Epoch Council was started right after the Salem Witch Trials, right?
Ardith: Yes. Our job is to make sure nothing like that mess ever happens again. When someone steps out of line we bring them in and put them on trial in front of the council.
I see. How about you, Draigh? You're a Sorcerer?
Draigh: I'm a Sorceri Bounty Hunter. We hunt down magic users who break the law and take care of them.
Um, when you say take care of them you mean…?
Ardith: They kill them. Ruthlessly. Like animals. No questions asked.
Draigh: Shut up woman! You have no idea.
I take it you two often find yourselves at odds.
Ardith: snort
Draigh: Obviously you have an advanced degree in understatement.
What exactly is the problem between you two…I mean…erm…your two organizations?
Ardith: It's simple. Epoch Mages believe everyone has a right to have their side of the story heard. The Sorceri believe everybody has a right to do things the Sorceri way, or die.
The two women look at Draigh. He shrugs.
Draigh: I actually agree with the witch on that one. Except I'd add that the Epochs are incredibly naïve and hopelessly inefficient.
How about the two of you? I'm sensing real tension between you. Can you tell me why you dislike each other so much?
Ardith: How much time do you have? The man's a beast. He's massive and bulging and overbearing…
Draigh: She dresses like a whore and she's bossy…
Ardith: As you can see, he's uppity and judgmental…
Draigh: She thinks she knows everything…
Ardith: He doesn't listen…
Draigh: She charges blindly into situations with no care at all for her own safety…
Ardith: He hogs the shower…
Everybody blinks…Ardith's face turns red…Draigh shifts in his chair.
Alrighty then… So what's next on the docket after you two finish this job? Will the Epoch Council and the Sorceries Authority work together again?
Ardith: Doubtful. We really don't work together very well.
Draigh: Grunts, nodding.
What makes this assignment special? Why did the powers that be decide you needed to work together on this one?
Draigh: Because this rogue witch is dealing in death magic and she needs to be stopped.
Ardith: Apparently many Hunters and Mages before us have tried to capture her. Nobody has been able to do it.
Draigh: She's a tricky bitch.
So your bosses must think highly of you…to give you a job nobody else could accomplish?
Ardith: Snorts
Draigh: I think they're just running out of suckers.
Okay, well good luck in your search for the rogue. I really hope you get her. I don't relish having the world overrun by zombies. (Shudders.)
Ardith: I'll get her. Don't worry.
Draigh: You'll get her? Come on witch, you can't even enter a lust bar without starting a brawl.
Ardith: Ha! At least I'm not afraid of heights like a sissy girl!
Draigh: Scowls. Maybe not, but you are afraid of being underground aren't you? You get all clammy and twitchy like a hell hound in a church if your feet even sink a few inches into the ground.
Ardith: You're an ass!
Draigh: Cold hearted, skank dressing…
Sounds to me like you're a perfect match…
Ardith and Draigh: Shut up!
(Flinches.) Until next week, I'm Sabrina Michaels, Paranormal News Network. We scribe, you decide! Have a good one everybody!

January 2013 discussion of the month. Series reading: Is it worth it to you?

Series reading: Is it worth it to you?

Series reading can be a wonderful thing, but sometimes it can become a pain in the butt. As we all know most series have a huge world built and if you pick up a book in the middle of the series you’re just out of luck at knowing what is really going on. I have seen many readers end up hating an author and a series because of this. I feel, as a reader, you are responsible for making the decision as to whether a book can be read out of order. With places like Goodreads and Shelfari, there is no excuse. Check the book out before you buy it. Heck, I have even asked my friends on Goodreads to make sure a book can be read as a standalone before jumping in. I’m one of those who is OCD when it comes to reading books in order. I have to know where every character comes in and why. An author can say that their book can be read as a standalone and I can still pick at it to death knowing the whole time I shouldn’t have listened, and should have started at book one. I learned my lesson about this pretty quickly. I believe that paranormal romance series tend to focus more on world building than other romance sub-genres, so that can be one of my downfalls.
One thing I love about reading series is being able to get to know the characters and watching them grow through each book. I feel like I really get to know them before they appear in their own book. I also love it when something is not completely explained in one book, but the next book clears everything up. Sometime you can even tell that the author was surprised at how it all turned out.
I know some authors will write a series as standalones, but most don’t. The reason is most of the time authors write things that have not been completely plotted out. As a result they too get shocked at how the story takes a life of it own and grows before their eyes in directions they never suspected. Therefore, it becomes necessary to read several books before something of major importance is opened up and settled. I have seen this in several great authors’ writings, but this can be a problem to readers because they have to keep buying in order to keep up. Odds are, if you’re like me, you have so many series going that you can no longer keep up. So, you end up either letting some fall by the way side or just give up on finishing that series.
Sometime when you are reading a series you find yourself anxiously waiting for the next book only to be disappointed when it never arrives. Why does this happen? Usually the explanation for this is either the author's inspiration disappears or the publisher quits the series because of sales. I really hate it when this happens and it is happening more and more these days. What kills me the most is some authors will just leave you hanging and never admit what really happened. I have never understood why they can’t just write a simple statement saying what really happened. If the series is cut by the publisher the author has other avenues they can pursue in order to keep writing. Sometimes they just need a little encouragement to try non-traditional means of publishing. This is again where a reader can promote the series like crazy before it gets the plug pulled.  If the plug gets pulled, by all means email the author and see if you can encourage them to indie publish or at least try a smaller press. One thing I have learned is it never hurts to ask.

What type of books do we review?
The reviewers at Bitten by Romance review romance.  You MUST have a happily ever after or happy for now to call your book a romance.  If you are unsure if your book qualifies as a romance, see our post on genres by clicking HERE.

We generally do not review outside of the romance genre.  You may occasionally see a non-romance review from an author we have previously read if that author also writes romance.

This is an adult site - we do not review young adult or teen romance.  We do review new adult.

We are accepting authors for review requests.
Please see our review request guidelines before submitting a request

Are your reviewers editors?
No, each of us here has a passion for reading and sharing that love of reading, but we are not editors. Some of us here do have more education or experience in editing then others, but basically we are just readers.  I’m saying this because you will find some things not grammatically correct here on the blog. I have had some authors fuss about this to others. I will be straightforward with you. If you have a problem with us not being editors and not having our posts grammatically correct then go find another blog. We try out best to make our reviews look professional and we each try to conduct ourselves in a professional manner, but I will get to the point here. We are all doing this for free and we don’t need to be criticized for grammatical issues. Our followers never complain, therefore, I feel you, the author, shouldn't either. Since this blog has been around for so long and has established a rapport with many authors, negative comments that are said around the loop get right back to me. So please keep this in mind when you send us a request, because once word gets back to me that an author has been trashing myself or one of my reviewers about grammatical issues, that author's request will go right into the trash box.

Labeling system:
We are now using a labeling system for our reviews. Each review is labeled with the author's name, the reviewer's name, the rating, the sexual rating, the genre and key words that describe the main characters (i.e. vampires, angels, etc.). We use a sexual rating system because readers need to know the level of sex they are going to be reading. Some like them hot while others likes them on the mild side.

Book tour host

I regret to say but we do not accept any blog tour hosting. The only way we will is if, it's one of our regular authors and that author will need to email us.

Vampire mythos classic vs. modern

Serena Zane

Over the centuries the mythos of the Vampire has both fascinated and disgusted us. Like a car accident, we just can't look away. The thought that something so beautiful could be so dangerous is almost irresistible for the human race.

As a person, I have a love of all things paranormal: vampires, werewolves, witches, etc... As a writer, the history of each has taken on a sort of morbid fascination for me. Due to the fact that there are so many different legends that have been created about the Vampire, I took what I loved most about each and then added my own twist on the vampire vs. werewolf wars of legend.

Zaniac vampires, as I like to call them, are created. In their own sub-culture, a priestess in Egyptian times fell in love with a young warrior. However, he spurned her affections, and as a curse she created the first vampire. Each vampire after that was created from this first 'original'. Zaniac vampires can shape-shift, fly, have heightened senses, mind-control, and telepathy. Silver can kill them. As is traditional, they cannot be exposed to sunlight, are affected adversely by Holy Water, and a good old fashioned stake will take them out. While they can 'fall in love' and do so intensely, there is no such thing as a 'lifemate' unlike in my favorite novels by Christine Feehan.  They do have a marriage ceremony that ties them for life and vampires do not believe in open relationships once married. Adultery is punished by death. However, before marriage, they are rather promiscuous. Zaniac vampires are immune to drugs, or disease, and are of course immortal.

The legend I have created to make this my own is a twist on the old vampire vs. werewolf wars. In Zaniac history werewolves were held as slaves by the vampire race. Werewolf blood is like a drug for vampires, creating a sense of euphoria. It is highly addictive. The werewolves rebelled back in the Middle Ages and a great war was started creating a rift between the two species. In the Dark Warrior series, vampire Damon Blake falls for Nikki Adams, who is part-werewolf. This creates numerous issues that Zaniac's can experience throughout this ongoing series. My newest release, Bane, explores how old grudges and beliefs can effect one's life. In my Hunter Diaries series, the vampires are very traditional and follow the old school form of vampire legend. In my release Insidious Whispers, Phoenix is endowed with a magical ability that will surprise you.

Just for fun, I have included a comparison chart below of some of my favorite vampire legends. Check it out, and let me know what you think!

Interview with Historical romance author Wendy Vella

Please welcome historical author Wendy Vella!

Laurie: Hello, Wendy, I hope you’ll be comfortable in the mist of us paranormal romance lovers. I swear to you some of us here do like historical romance), besides, we don’t bite hard. LOL.  So, please make yourself comfortable and tell us a bit about yourself.

Wendy: Thanks so much for having me here Laurie and can I say that paranormal is one of my favorite genres to read, I just have no clue how to write it! All that world building constantly amazes me, that takes real talent.

I was born and raised in the North Island of New Zealand in a small rural town that has since grown considerably. Married for 28 years to a wonderful man who puts up with a great deal from me and my two children he has often said that I should harness my ability to talk incessantly for the greater good!  My family is English and from them came my love of reading. I started on Georgette Heyer ‘These Old Shades,’ and from there my love of the Regency Era grew. I really didn’t start writing until I was 18 when I penned my first contemporary which will never be seen by the naked eye. I then wrote my first historical at 20. I joined RWNZ and started entering competitions and it was only then that my writing started to develop. The knowledge in these organizations is invaluable and it was at a conference I met my editor. She asked for a partial and then the full and then I got the offer, and yes there was plenty of happy dancing and far too much champagne.

Ryan Harrison lost his wife in a plane crash five years ago. To cope with the pain of her loss, he dedicated himself to his job and to raising their daughter. Two lives about to converge.

As Kate begins to dig into a past she doesn’t remember, evidence leads her to San Francisco and puts her on the path toward Ryan, a man who sees in her the woman he loved and lost.
