Guest paranormal romance author Joanne Kenrick

TITLE: The perfect setting for a ghost story…

Photobucket
“The shuddering became violent, and sounds of rattling glass bounced off the walls. The French doors burst open, encouraging the white veiled curtains to dance in the ocean wind, and crystal chandeliers to rustle eerily.” Snippet - When A Mullo Loves A Woman – JoAnne Kenrick

I have a thing for old, black and white ghost movies, can you tell? I adore how they focus more on building atmosphere, rather than force-feeding you effects and gore. Well, they had to back then, due to lack of said effects. A new ghost movie is released from time to time that, even with the gore, manages to build tension as well as the oldies used to. Say, The Grudge, for instance. But mostly, they don’t scare me like the old ones do. I like to be on the edge of my seat wondering what horrors await, or what the unseen creature/ghost looks like.

Watching those older ghost tales, for me, is like cozying up with my favorite book. I adore the language used, the intricate twists and turns, and the settings; almost always a house on a cliff surrounded by an angry ocean. The opening scenes to these movies are poetic and spooky. *shudder*

I’m sure my love for these movies, and their setting, is apparent in my new release ‘When A Mullo Loves A Woman’ which is set in Monterey Bay, surprise, surprise. What a perfect place to hold a séance -- an empty house on a cliff top with views of an angry ocean. Any haunting scene wouldn’t be complete without it, in my opinion. Monterey Bay lends it’s self beautifully for that purpose, with its rocky shores and foggy days. Don’t get me wrong, my book is no old fashioned spook-tacular. We’re talking family secrets and an ancient legend of the undead (Mullo), past lives and yes, it wouldn’t do to have a ghostly setting without a haunting, or two. And then there’s the romance!

I think my love for the classics began when I saw the 1944 version of The Uninvited. I had already endured a few unexplained experiences when I saw this. It was my first ghost movie, if you like, and the first time I realized this sort of thing existed…for real (hey, as a child, a movie is real. Leave me alone!). It served as confirmation that I wasn’t crazy, but I was also scared out of my wits; I remember the sleepless night that followed that viewing. It wasn’t nice.

Rebecca,Du Maurier,Hitchcock,Movie,1944,Ghost,HorrorRebecca is another favorite of mine, again set in a mansion on a cliff top. I can see why the best ghost movies use that setting for a ghost story. There is something so very dangerous, and unsettling, about a beautiful, yet empty, house with beautiful views of the ocean. The ocean is a wild thing; unpredictable and horribly effective in setting up a spooky scene.

“My sight locked onto the bleak, never-ending ocean crashing against the rocky shore. There was something transfixing about the fluidity of the movement and the meeting of elements, water and earth.” Snippet -- When A Mullo Loves A Woman – JoAnne Kenrick

The souls of ancient predators crouch within the Eleven. Primal instincts and barely contained savagery drive them. But in a modern world threatened with chaos and darkness, they are…Gods of the Night.

But she needs help dealing with the shadowy power guiding the escalating slaughter. Utah would be her last choice for a partner. Once a deadly foe, he now becomes her ally and protector. Loving him will be more dangerous than anything she’s ever done. Because when Utah releases his soul, the ultimate predator will once again stalk the earth, and death will walk with him.

Danger has never been so sexy, come and read a twist in the shape-shifting world and meet some hot dinosaurs. I felt this book was way better than the first two. Nina Bangs creativity for the end of this world Mayan prophecy is just outstanding on how she brings everything together, I just can’t wait for the big finish. I found this one to be an emotional ride with all emotions present. You meet a few new characters the most important is Kione he is a prince of the faes.

This book was so emotional. I will have to warn anyone who is not tolerate  of the mentioning of m/m rape, but if you can please try. I found myself crying at a few points and let me tell you that’s hard to do I’m not a normal crier period.  Anyway there is two scenes in here that I just lost it. One is when Fin is taking in Kione’s pain and Utah and Lia steps in to help. The other is when  Kione is sharing his past, it was just horrible.  Its always nice to read when others step in to help no matter what happens.

Lia and her mother was in the second book. As you know Lia is a human at least for now and she is set out to take down Utah for killing so many vampires. She became his driver. The first thing she told Utah was to “pull over, you prehistoric jerk.” Lia was fun to read. I found her strong or soft when needed. She sure was witty and full of sarcasm when needed.

Utah is a Utahraptor. As you read in book two he lost his brother and these type raptors run in a pack, so he is now on a killing spree and wants nothing more than kill all vampires. Will he kill the one woman that is destined to be a vampire? It’s a sexy ride to find out.

This series is best to be read in order, but can be standalone.

Guest author Sela Carsen and giveaway

Please welcome author Sela Carsen!

Introducing yourself to people who only know you through what you write is always a little difficult. If you met me in person, you'd think, "There goes another mom."
And you'd be right. I'm mostly another mom. One of the many millions out there. We all have common experiences. We make sure the kids get to school and activities and dentist appointments. We make sure there's dinner on the table every night and that the homework gets done. We make sure the bathrooms get cleaned on at least a semi-regular basis. We have our own styles and schedules, but daily life is daily life.
But during the day when I should probably be folding laundry, I'm writing. Putting pieces of myself on the page not just to get the voices out of my head, but to give other people a smile during their day.
People assume that they know who writers are because they've read our words. They project about what our lives must be like. And to a certain extent, that's true for me.
You'd probably be able to decipher that I'm Southern. A Texan, to be specific, but I've not written a specifically Texan heroine.
You'd probably figure out that I like to eat. I like sushi and Sonic drive-ins. I drink wine and have been known to bake muffins by the hundredweight. All of my characters eat what sounds good to me when I'm writing. Pizza, pasta, steak, creamed spinach and sweet potato fries have all made appearances. (This close after Thanksgiving, though, I'm still too full to read that sentence without a stomachache.)
It would be a no-brainer for you to assume I like to read, based on some of my books. One of my heroines nearly swooned when she walked into the hero's library. In my head, it was like the library in "Beauty and the Beast," or more accurately, like the one in Robin McKinley's glorious book, "Beauty: A Retelling of Beauty and the Beast." In another book, my heroine was a librarian.
All of these things are true, yet I work to make sure that my heroines really aren't that much like me at all. I mean, if I met a werewolf in the dark, I'd probably pee myself and faint. If I turned into a Selkie, I'd sink. If a vampire chased me through a graveyard at midnight, I'd be exsanguinated in the time it would take me to spell "exsanginuated."
But not my gals! They're not just little bits and pieces of my experiences. They start out as a few words on a page or as faint images or sounds in my head, but by the end, they've become so much more. They've become fully realized individuals, separate and distinct from each other and very definitely distinct from myself.
So sure, they may read the same books I read and they may like sweet potato fries as much as I do, but they are entirely themselves -- and fun to get to know on their own!

Carolina Pearl is second in the Carolina Wolf series. Ok, so there are really only two books total. There might be a third someday if I can get it to come out right.
The truth is, I never set out to write a series. I always thought a series had to be something that was planned and plotted and outlines and...I don't. At all. The very thought gives me hives.
I wrote Carolina Wolf for a call for submission that Samhain was doing for paranormal romantic comedies. I'd already written two para-rom-coms (it takes a while to write it all out), so it was right up my alley.
It ended up in an anthology called Tickle My Fantasy and people seemed to like it. After a few months, my fellow anthology-buddies came up with the idea that it might be fun to try it again. Since I'd never planned for there to be another story, I struggled with writing Carolina Pearl.
I knew I wanted to keep the town a central part of the story. There were secondary characters who needed to make more appearances, and there was more life in this little town than could be contained in just one novella.
So I did a Google map search of the real-life Congaree Swamp in South Carolina. And there's a house there, just on the edge of the swamp. All by itself. The satellite image shows it to be pretty old and run-down, but the idea of it was all I needed.
Now, my husband is a real DIY kind of guy. I've spent more hours watching HGTV and Bob Vila and "Holmes on Homes" with him than I can count. I've lived through one major kitchen gutting, one minor kitchen remodel, and at least three entire bathroom re-dos since we've been married.
Now I had my town and I had my house. I closed my eyes and saw a man replacing siding by himself, standing on a scaffold and cussing in frustration. Voila! A hero is born! Ok, so maybe not too heroic, but he only needed the right woman.
I saw an opportunity for tying this story in with Carolina Wolf right off the bat, though. I loved writing the prologue for Wolf -- it encompassed so much sensory detail and really dropped people smack into the setting. So I used some parallels and my heroine appeared.
It sounds almost hokey when I write it out like that, but those were the sparks I needed to get the story going. Now it's the in the hands of the readers to decide if I did it right!

A family legend could lead to a treasure more precious than pearls…or get them killed.
Between babysitting her very pregnant sister-in-law and fending off her mother’s nagging about her marital status, Blair Moreau is going insane. Her only hold on sanity is her daily walk for a guilty peek at her crush, the sexy neighbor who’s fixing up the old Cotesworth place.
Conn Lucas, the bastard son of Culford’s leading family, got way out of town a long time ago. When the only relative who didn’t despise him leaves him her 250-year-old house, Conn plans to refurbish it, flip it, and get back to Connecticut as soon as possible. Until a local beauty with a rare talent for DIY gives him a hand with some stubborn siding.
When he makes her mad enough to swing a two-by-four at his head, he realizes Blair is better than perfect. Especially when his efforts to keep her from killing him explode into an erotic rush of adrenaline that unleashes desires they’ve both kept hidden.
Breaking through Conn’s tough shell isn’t as difficult Blair’s next hurdle—telling him she’s a werewolf. First, though, they’ve got to deal with meddling ghosts and a bad ol’ boy cousin who isn’t above taking what he wants at nail-gun point…
Warning: This book contains a smokin’ hot werewolf chick with serious DIY know-how and a man who thinks that’s sexy; illegal use of nail guns; things to do in a claw-foot tub; pirate references; piddling Dobermans and meddling ghosts. Which is better than meddling Dobermans and piddling ghosts.

This is a sexy fast pace novella. I love to read short and exciting books and I really love it when there is treasure in it. I enjoyed the wolf shape shifter being the female roll with the human as the man, I don’t think I have read one like it. I enjoyed both Conn and Blair and I love how Blair was submissive to Conn. The sex between them is D/s and very tasteful and hot. These two have an adventure with some ghosts, a villain, and treasure. I know I will be reading more from this author.

This is erotic author Ashlyn Chase first book in her new light paranormal romance series. I found this a good start for sexy humors series. Life is never dull in this apartment building full of paranormal creatures. You get one noisy Aunt, one nasty ghost or I should say one ghost that may get on your nerves and more. Then you throw in one snoopy reporter that could spell disaster for the whole building.

Merry never knew what she was getting into when she moved into her new apartment. She not only got an apartment full of paranormal creatures, but a few new surprises along the way one in particular would be the hot new landlord named Jason who happens to be an all-star pitcher. What could possibility happen by just having a fling with the hot all-star pitcher anyway? Well you have to read and find out;)  Both Jason and Marry were very enjoyable to read.

This is a nice light read with a hot romance. There is plenty of sexual tension between Marry and Jason and of course you get the hot sex to go along with it.

This is a good paranormal romance story and a great start for a series. There is a fallen angel, humor, action, evil, demons and naked hot men. This is one of Stacey Kennedy’s sexier series, so if you like it hot here you go. I found an excellent storyline and its easy explained. I loved the ideal of a seeker having to be paired up or mated with an watcher to find the evil demons.

I had a hard time getting in to this one at first. The reason is the H/H are the type that thinks the other hates the other, so there is argueing back in forth. I really enjoyed the book after Paxton finally blows and opens up to find out why Knox disliked her so much. This is I know a turn off for some, but I have learned we all have insecure issues and its going to show up in books.

Paxton has a gift that she believes is a curse, she can see people being killed by another human, but what she doesn’t know is that the one that’s doing the killing is not human at all. Her close friend Tate has never known she has this ability and blows. When she meets a man named Knox their world as they know it will never be the same

He was a master of seduction - but no match for the magical allure of the woman he wanted most...

Carys knew from the moment she first spied on Maximus in his naked barbarian glory that he was a dangerous Roman centurion - his taut, battle-scarred flesh marking him as a fearless warrior. But her desire for him was as undeniable as it was illicit.

Charged by his emperor to eliminate a clan of powerful Druids in Britain, Maximus never expects his mission to be thwarted by the clan's ethereal princess, Carys, his daring voyeur. Falling under her spell, he doesn't realize her true heritage - until he captures her heart as well as her body.

As Carys's loyalties are twisted, and freedom is no longer her single-minded obsession, an avenging former lover threatens to crush Maximus's people into oblivion. Now Carys and Maximus must overcome the devastation of war and face the ultimate sacrifice if their forbidden love is to survive.

Sexual

A nice change of pace from the usual historical romance offerings: A Roman Centurion, Maximus, and a Druid Princess, Carys. Two lovers caught on opposite sides of a war. What a delicious set up for a romance!

And what opposites they are. Carys - A Druid Princess from a matriarchal line. A cultural that holds women in high esteem, honors their Goddesses above all, doesn’t believe they need a man’s permission. Maximus - Roman, alpha, protective, possessive, sees women as property, patriarchal. It’s these differences that Ms. Phillips puts to work….overtime.

He towered over her, his wood nymph, his Celtic lady, his Carys. “Why do you never do as you are bid?”
“Because”--Carys gasped as she flexed her thighs and dug her heels into his backside--“I’m not your slave, Maximus. I’m your woman.”

Maximus and Carys truly care and love each other, regardless of the consequences or conventions of what their peers and social standing require. They will do whatever is necessary to protect each other from the ravages of war.

I’m not a big fan of magic, and I felt at times it was excess baggage. One incident occurred when Carys entered into a drug-induced dream state to commune with her Goddesses. Another was during the destruction of the “spiral”: Was this an explosion or an implosion? I know Druid magic is an integral part of the story line and Carys’s way of life, but I just couldn’t wrap my mind around some of this.

And because of that, I was really undecided on a 3 or 4 howl. Oh - The roman bath scene. Okay, a 3.5 Howl!

Interview with paranormal author Nina Bangs and giveaway

Please welcome my one of my favorite authors Nina Bangs.

Laurie- Would you please tell us what inspired you to write about dinosaurs?

Nina-I was searching for a new series idea. When I looked at all the wonderful paranormals already on the shelves, I decided that I needed something different, something that hadn’t been done yet. I knew I wanted my heroes to be the ultimate alpha males, but what could be more alpha than a wolf or vampire? Then I thought of Jurassic Park. Do you remember the scene where the tour car was stuck on the muddy road, and the boy inside watched the water in the two glasses ripple as the ground shook from distant footfalls? Boom, boom, boom, the footsteps came closer and closer. And when the T. rex finally broke from the trees, it was a wow moment. The predator’s size and ferocity took my breath away. I wanted my heroes to have that kind of impact—sensual and gorgeous in their human forms and savage ancient hunters in animal form.

Laurie-How did the 2012 Mayan end of the world prophecy come in to play with this awesome series?

Nina- I love listening to “Coast to Coast AM” when I can stay awake long enough to enjoy the show. Over the last few years, George Noory, the show’s host, has had quite a few guests who discussed the end of the Mayan long count calendar. What will happen in 2012? Some people predict the apocalypse while others believe it will herald in an age when humanity will ascend to a higher level of consciousness. Of course, I have no idea what will happen, if anything. But I decided that the ending date would make a perfect “ticking clock” for my series. What if men with the souls of ancient predators led by a mysterious and powerful leader are all that stand between mankind and complete annihilation on December 21, 2012?

Laurie- What can you say to the readers that just don’t think dinosaurs are sexy to get them to pick up the first book and try it?

Nina-I suppose perception is everything. For example: dragons are considered sexy. Why? Have you Googled dragon images and really looked at them? Pretty scary stuff. And don’t even get me started on some werewolf pictures I’ve seen. Then why not a T. rex? Remember, it’s not the beast that’s sexy, but the man that becomes the beast. I hope that changes a few minds.

Laurie- I know you don’t want to give much away, but we are on the edge of our seats. Why did Fin save these eleven and bring them to the future in human form? And can you give us a clue on the connection between Fin and Seven?

Nina-Fin has an agenda, and it’s not only about saving humanity. And no, I’m not telling you what that agenda is. He chose the ten he wanted to save even as Zero was destroying their world, and those they loved were dying. Fin took the ones he thought would have both the physical and emotional strength to survive in the present. He also wanted them to have a strong sense of loyalty. And if they also hungered for vengeance against Zero, all the better. But beyond that, he chose the ones who would bond with the women he saw in his visions.

Fin and Seven share a past that defies time and space. I guess that’s all I can say without turning this into a spoiler.

Laurie-Will all eleven including Fin get a story?

Nina-I doubt that I’ll be able to do all of their stories. A lot depends on sales. But I’ll write them as long as readers want to know more about the Eleven. I definitely will do Fin’s story.

Laurie-Have you considered writing a book for the vampire Jude?

Nina-I’ve always been partial to vampires. So, yes, I want to do Jude’s story if the opportunity presents itself. I’d also like to write Kione’s story. I love tortured heroes, and the fae prince is about as tortured as you can get.

Laurie-What does it take to make the perfect alpha male together with the perfect female lead, without going overboard with one or the other?

Nina-Umm, luck? No, just kidding. I always want my heroes to be strong men, but I never want them to smother the heroines. They have to respect her and accept her as an equal partner in their fight against the enemy. So, no overbearing Neanderthals need apply. I like a kick-butt heroine, but I never want her to take the place of the hero. If she’s powerful enough to win every fight and destroy every evil, then I guess we don’t need a hero. And I always want my hero and heroine to have flaws. I don’t write perfect characters.

Laurie-You are so good at this, how do you make your characters so great without being annoying?

Nina-As a reader, I enjoy characters that aren’t simply black or white. Gray is my color of choice. And as a writer, I never make my characters all good or all bad. I even try to give my villains at least one positive quality even if it’s only a warped sense of humor. In Eternal Craving, Eight was vicious and cruel, but he had one redeeming moment. When he knew he was about to be banished from Earth, he asked that someone release the seagull he’d rescued.

Laurie- Can you give us some insight on how Dorchesterpub and the new ebook is going to work? And is this going to delay your Eternal Prey release date?

Nina-I’m no longer writing for Dorchester, so all future books will be from different publishers. Eternal Prey will be out on December 28 from Avon. From what Dorchester has said, my backlist will be available in e-format. A few books will also appear as trade paperbacks.

Laurie- Would you tell us what you are working on next and what to expect next at the bookstore?

Nina-I’m going back to the Castle of Dark Dreams for my next book. Edge, the cosmic troublemaker in charge of death, finally gets his own story. Next to Ganymede, he’s the most powerful troublemaker around. And there’s no love lost between the two. But their dislike for each other explodes into open warfare when a third party comes to play. I don’t have a release date yet for Wicked Edge.

A erotic read that’s not only sexy, but very compassionate. I loved this short novella it has a very sweet story that’s not just over the top with sex. You get a ménage of M/F/M (with back door action), Voyeurism, Ghosts and great characters. I would recommend this to erotic readers and paranormal romance readers that loves a little ghost sex action;)

There is some sexy voyeurism scenes, one that is in a restaurant and well you never know what goes on under someone else table *wicked grin*. I really enjoyed the characters Nadine is still very emotional over the death of her fiancé. You would think she would have moved on by now, but everyone is different. You just have to read to find out how she got past her barrier. I will say its not something you would even think would happen. Kane, I really liked, he doesn’t push even though he is about to blow his top to be more than just a friend to Nadine.

Aiden’s name has been carved into the victim’s stomach. Imagine his surprise when he discovers the dead man was Ms. Rolfe’s latest lover.

One note please. SPOILER ALERT! At one point Daniella tells Aiden she believes her father was an Egyptian demigod. She goes on to talk about Egyptian mythology. Excuse me!!! What happened to Adam and Lillith? Weren’t they The First? This blather I could have done without as it didn’t add one thing to the story. It actually confused the hell out of me.

I considered the first book of the series, EDEN’S HELL, the appetizer and this one the entrée. It has everything I needed: sex, blood and guts, a murdering fiend, suspense. A succulent dish that tantalized the taste buds.

I liked it! Ah yes, this…this is what draws me to Vampires. They are dark and secretive. They are deliciously wicked and sinfully sensual.

The blurb that accompanies the book -- fuhgeddaboutit. You’ll get around to it by the middle of the book and then it will make sense. An “aha” moment! Until then……

The Human, Eva: Blindly follows her boyfriend Ryder to a “vampire” club. She is taken against her will as a “pet” but manages to escape.

Addison: He takes Eva to his beach house to keep her safe. Unfortunately, Eva knows too much about their existence -- he cannot let her leave.

Satrina: She wants her property back! And she will do whatever is necessary to achieve that goal.

She had always resented Francesco and his damn holier than thou attitude. Where was the fun in being a vampire if you couldn’t have an occasional bloodbath? Fucking pussies.

And the ending - OMG - I did not see that coming. Yeah, I liked it, A LOT!
