About the Author:
I’m just a regular ol’ Midwest girl who likes Game of Thrones and am obsessed with Modern Family and The Goldbergs. I run, I eat, I run, I eat. It’s a vicous cycle. I love carbs, but there’s love-hate relationship with my ass and thighs. Mostly hate. I like a good cocktail (oh hell…who am I kidding? I love any cocktail). I’m a huge creature of habit, but I’ll tell you I’m flexible. I read every single day and if I don’t get a chance…watch the hell out, I’m a raving bitch. My iPad and me: BFFs. I’m direct and I make no apologies for it. I swear too much. I love alternative music and in my next life I want to be a bad-ass female rocker. Civilization has ended.

Vampires, werewolves, and the Graced are at war with their human creators, and humanity is losing. But one girl might hold the key to salvation. Held captive with her fellow humans by alpha Wolfgang and his pack of weres, Laney secretly inches ever closer to breaking were and vampire blood dependency forever.

But Laney doesn't have long. Their numbers decimated by plague, humans are being kidnapped and reduced to livestock. And when Laney and her sister are kidnapped by a neighboring vampire clan notorious for its "farming" of humans, their only hope lies in Wolf – who doesn't know the shocking secret Laney has gone to great lengths to conceal.

With their lives and the future of humanity in the balance, can Laney and Wolf learn to trust each other before their races cease to exist?
This books packs quite an action punch. While I read it without reading "Graced" first, I was able to follow along. I would recommend starting with "Graced", as there is a substantial amount of back story jammed in the first half of the novella.

This book screams futuristic Mad Max meets old school sci~fi. Humans are the under dog, and the future isn't looking good. With so many creatures in this story, I'm looking forward to a developing series.

Her Wild Hero by Paige Tyler ~ Review

Name: Kendra Carlsen
Rank: Trainer, Dept. of Covert Ops
Objective: Get out of the office and into the field

Name: Declan MacBride
Rank: Munitions Expert, Dept. of Covert Ops
Status: Bear Shifter
Objective: Protect Kendra at all costs

The steamy Costa Rican jungle brings out the bear in Declan MacBride when he and new operative Kendra Carlsen are ambushed. In the midst of relying on each other to survive, and fighting his explosive attraction to Kendra, this shifter is about to lose control...
Ohhh....deep in the jungle romance. Quite literally. I loved the set up for this book, jungle mission gone wrong, Kendra and Declan alone in the wilderness running and fighting for their lives. Very intense. There was so much action that a couple times the romance got a tad bit sidetracked - but there still quite a few very nice romantic touches and moments that Kendra and Declan experience as they run for their lives.

One of the things I've liked best about this series in general, is that the women can hold their own. They may not be the best at everything, but they have a strength and skill set that is an integral part to completing the mission. Kendra is a serious tough girl, which is a side that we don't get to see too much of before now. She's awesome!!! But, she isn't afraid of her softer side, and is one of my favorite characters so far in the series.

Declan is a big teddy bear - or so we think at first. But he when push comes to shove, we get to see some new sides to the big bear shifter. He's vulnerable, protective, and loving in ways that will melt your heart. I loved watching him start to open up to new ideas and new people. He makes an amazing hero.

The mystery of the hybrids continues and things keep getting more and more convoluted, but I'm hoping we get a few solid answers or leads in the next one.

Title: Her Fierce Warrior
Author: Paige Tyler
Series: X-Ops, #4
Release Date: March 1st, 2016
ISBN: 9781492625865

The woman tensed. As anger and fear ricocheted across her face, her eyes changed from red to green to brown in a dizzying display like nothing he’d ever seen.

Every instinct in Angelo’s body screamed at him to lunge for his weapon. Instead he set his feet for impact, blocking her slashing claws. Unbelievably, after a few moments of struggling, she went still, all the fight gone…

Minka isn’t sure she should trust the sexy Special Forces soldier who found her. Subjected to horrors, on the run from scientists set on locking her in a cage, Minka is terrified of the monster she’s becoming…and somehow, Angelo is the only one who can calm the beast inside her and make her feel safe.

But can she trust the way he makes her feel when she’s not even sure she can trust herself?

An Excerpt:
“So what did you and Landon do this afternoon?” Minka asked, her soft voice dragging him back to the present.

Angelo looked up to see that Minka had already polished off two fajitas. Damn, the girl could eat. “Landon gave me a tour of the DCO complex. I did some target shooting and blew up a few things. He even let me play with the expensive surveillance toys. I swear, it felt more like a recruiting pitch to get me to work there than anything.”

Minka’s eyes flashed green, her full lips curving slightly. Damn, why the hell had he said it like that? Now she probably thought he was going to come work for the DCO. Even if he wanted to, he couldn’t, not after just reenlisting for another five years. The army wasn’t the kind of job where you could walk into the boss’s office and say, “I quit.”

Thinking it would be a good idea to steer the conversation back to safer ground, he reached for another fajita and asked Minka a question instead. “What do you think you’ll work on next with Ivy and Tanner? You going to practice with the claws for a while or move on to something else?”

Angelo felt a little crappy about changing the subject, but if Minka noticed, she didn’t seem to mind. And it wasn’t like he had to fake interest in what she was saying. Anything that involved Minka was important to him. Besides, he didn’t know much about shifters or hybrids, so the whole thing was pretty damn fascinating.

“What do you visualize when you see the beast in your mind?” he asked.

“Before today, I thought of it as a giant, blurry monster.

But after learning that the beast is a cat, that’s how I picture it now.” She smiled. “Not a little house cat, of course. They aren’t scary enough. More like a big cat that roams the mountains.”

“Makes sense,” he said.

Minka set the other half of her fourth fajita on her plate and gave him a curious look. “Would you mind if I ask you a personal question?” His mouth twitched as he prepared another fajita. He wasn’t used to Minka being so reserved. She usually said whatever was on her mind, regardless of whether it was personal or not.

“Go ahead,” he said.

“The first time we met, I had claws, fangs, glowing red eyes, and I tried to kill you. Since then, I’ve spent most of the time telling you about an imaginary creature that lives inside my head and makes me act like a monster. How are you so calm about that? Most people would have run away already.”

Angelo chuckled. Not exactly the personal question he’d expected, but then again Minka rarely did the expected.
“Well, my mom was full-blooded Cherokee, and I grew up around all kinds of Indian folktales and legends.

My dad was in the army, and whenever he was deployed, Mom would take my sisters and me back to the reservation where she grew up in Oklahoma. I’d stay up half the night listening to the old men tell stories about shape-shifters, animal spirits, skin-walkers, and trickster spirits.” He grinned. “I’m not saying I necessarily believed in all that stuff back then, but after meeting Ivy, Tanner, and the other shifters at the DCO, it just didn’t faze me that much.”

Minka looked at him with wide eyes. “You’re a real American Indian? Like in the movies? With horses and everything?”

He laughed again. The expression of wonder on her face was adorable. “First, I’m only half-Indian. My dad is Mexican, so there’s that. And second, Native Americans are almost nothing like you see in the movies. We don’t all live in tepees and ride horses. In fact, I don’t even own a horse.”

Minka was a little disappointed about the no-horse thing, but she was fascinated with what it was like growing up on an Indian reservation and being surrounded by all those legends. She immediately asked him to tell her some Indian stories. It had been a long time since he’d thought about them, but to make her happy, he dug through his head and tried to remember every tale he’d heard as a kid.

Lily Maxton Guest Post ~ Judging a Book by It's Cover

Ah, the historical romance cover. From the days of yore when Fabio was the ubiquitous long-haired hero to its more recent manifestations, different romance covers can inspire love or hate. Like so many things, what makes a great cover is subjective. As an author, I actually have very little say in what my publisher chooses for my books, but just like anyone else, I have my preferences.

Some people like the shirtless (or open-shirted) ab-man being at the front and center, which is totally cool. It’s not like shirtless ab-men are difficult to look at. But some people might prefer something more subtle—flowers or fancy gloves or some other object. And these are also nice, especially if you don’t have your e-reader and you’re reading in public, and like me, you get annoyed when people give you condescending looks. (Stupid jerks, what do they know!) Ahem.

As for myself, I tend to think the best covers feature both the hero and heroine, but ideally, I like them to be a little less sexualized and a little more sensual.

For instance, I think my favorite cover from my own books is The Wager. To me, this is the ideal—in just one image, there’s passion and longing and tenderness (the stuff of great romance!)—without going overboard. It teases you with sexual potential instead of putting it all right in front of you. It also gets bonus points for trying to look like it’s in the Regency period, even if the clothing isn’t a hundred percent accurate. And I’ve been told by a couple of people that the image reminds them of the train station scene in North and South. That scene makes me cry happy tears, so enough said.

But I also love historical romance covers with just the heroine, because who doesn’t love gorgeous dresses and awesome female leads? The best of these do a little something extra to make the image stand out. My current favorite in this style is One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean. This hits all the right notes for me. I love the way the heroine is looking back, a little mischievous, a little teasing, with just a slight bit of skin showing. I love that dress. I love that she’s sitting at a desk and that her glasses are on the desk. Touches of personality can definitely jazz up a cover, and I think the designers of this one did it so perfectly. We all know you’re not supposed to judge a book by its cover, but a cover can do a lot of things—it can be fun eye-candy, it can tempt, intrigue, or show-case the main character’s personality—most importantly, it can get readers interested in the words inside the book.

**********

Thank you so much for joining us today, Lily. I love your choice of covers and I have to agree - I love the dresses and the vibrant colors as well.

He crouched so as not to appear as threatening and folded his hands loosely in front of him. “Well, now that you made me ruin my clothes and took me for a run through the woods, are you going to tell me what frightened you?” She stiffened but didn’t shift. He motioned in the direction of the bar. “Was it that pathetic human? Or a different one, because I’ll—” She shook her head. “Another shifter, then? Someone from your pack harassing you?” Without the evidence of one, it didn’t seem likely, but he couldn’t imagine what else would’ve sent her running. Again, she shook her head. “Okay, then.” He waited a moment, then blew out a breath. “Look, why don’t you just shift and talk to me? Don’t be afraid. I’m not going to hurt you.” A long moment passed while she studied him through her icy wolf eyes before she eased her tense posture and shifted. He watched in awe as she changed shapes, a sight he’d seen hundreds of times, yet never had the flip in forms mesmerized him the way hers did. For one brief second, a fuzzy image of a white wolf meshed with that of the woman who housed it. A glowing tether connected them, heart to heart. Her wolf’s shape faded and hers gained dimension. In the next moment, a naked female stood before him. Hand planted on her hip, she raised her chin. “I’m not afraid of you.” He swept his gaze over her. It was impossible not to. Full breasts, shapely hips and lush thighs—she was beautiful. No, gorgeous. Hell, even that didn’t do her justice, but he couldn’t think of a better description. He only knew he’d never laid eyes on a more perfect female, but if he didn’t tear his gaze from the space between her legs, her opinion of him would be less than stellar. He glanced into her face. “I’m glad. I didn’t want to scare you, but I was afraid someone was after you. When you took off, I reacted. I couldn’t let any of the humans see a wolf running through their town.” “You’re right.” Her shoulders slumped. “I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking.” “Don’t apologize. It’s the full moon. Makes even the most levelheaded more prone to act on instinct.” “That’s what I was trying to avoid by running away from you.” “Me?” He pointed to himself. “What did I do to frighten you? Was it because I shoved that loser against the wall? If so, you should know I didn’t hurt him.” “I believe you.” He pushed to his feet. “Then what did I do?”

Pine Creek Highlander Series by Janet Chapman ~ Series Review

Title: Highlander Series
Author: Janet Chapman
Length: Novels
Reviewed by: Laurie

I started this series for my reading enjoyment, not to review them, but as I tore through the series I found a very talented author that I wanted to share with our readers.

This series features every sub-genre in romance, so this means there is something for every romance reader out there today. I especially loved the paranormal aspects of the story-line.

Highlander series offers readers:

  • Time travel- Past and future time travel.
  • Hot demanding highlanders that are still stuck in the 1200’s.
  • Magic- the poor old wizard that brings them there is constantly making a mess out of things.  Some of the heroines and heroes also have magic that will be revealed in each book.
  • Older heroines - yeah, not your typical twenty something heroines.
  • Humor- A few books are really funny and cute.
What I liked most was these characters are not all perfect, as in the sexiest heroes and heroines out there, some have some serious flaws.

Overall the characters are believable and enjoyable. There are just a couple I didn’t really care for.
The sex level is a 3 in each book, there is not a whole lot of it and what is there is very tastefully done.

Things I didn’t care for much
Now, not all of these books are going to grab you. I had two books I didn’t enjoy. One was boring and the other was totally unrealistic, but if you figure the rest were a 4 or 5 star average, then that’s not bad.

The first couple of books brought a lot of settings details and then all the sudden they were gone, replaced with more dialogue. Not that I mind dialogue, but I love seeing what is happening around the characters too. So that was another disappointment to me.

Series order and each rating

Only with a Highlander is my favorites, the hero is holding a secret from everyone and once it was revealed it totally shocks Winter. Heck, I didn’t even see it coming, had no clue.

Highlander for the Holidays is my next favorite, I loved the heroine Jessie, spite the horror she went though she wasn’t about to let it get the best of her.

I know some of these are older books, but you can still find them on eBay, Goodwill and other swap book stores. Amazon has them at full price. I bought all but the last two at my used book store. This series is totally worth reading if you love magic, humor and hot highlanders that will anything to protect what is theirs.

The first few books can be read as standalone, but the last few books have future characters that time travel so they can be a bit confusing to new readers.

I know this is not a full extensive review for this series, I just wanted to encourage anyone that has these books to go ahead and read them. I've had this whole set just sitting on my bookshelf for over two years and really wished I would have read them sooner.

I love the author's writing style so much I just ordered the whole set of her spin off sries, Spellboud Falls, and I do suggest you read Hilanders before Spellbound Falls.I'm also collecting her other spin off, Midnaight Bay series.

EXCERPT FROM BAD WOLF BY JENNIFER ASHLEY

Joanne straightened to find Broderick right against her back. She turned around awkwardly, pinned between the edge of a table and him. She swallowed. “Yeah,” she repeated.
“It’s soft here,” Broderick said, his voice anything but that. “Pretty. Like you.”
He didn’t touch her. He didn’t have to. Broderick kept her in place simply looking at her. Joanne could have ducked past him, but her breath hitched, and she stayed put.
Pretty. Like you. Not many people were around to call Joanne pretty. She’d been working with IT guys a long time, and while most were just as interested in women as non-computer-geeks, they also weren’t forthcoming with the compliments. They were more likely to praise a string of Joanne’s code than tell her she looked nice. The last guy she’d dated had been into drawing his own X-rated Manga, starring women whose breasts were so impossibly large they’d never have been able to walk in real life. He’d asked Joanne to pose for him, thinking she’d be flattered.
“Pretty,” Joanne said, her voice strangled.
Broderick’s face softened. When he did that, when his bad-ass facade fell away, he was the most absolutely gorgeous man who walked the planet.
No, not a man, a Shifter—who’d taken in her sister’s mate to nurse him back to health against his better judgment, and who called her pretty.
“Yeah,” he said.
“I’m sorry I yelled at you.” Joanne let her voice become as gentle as his. “I know you must be freaked out about what happened to you.”
A bit of his ferocity returned. “You think?”
“It wasn’t your fault,” Joanne said. “If you didn’t see or hear them, or even scent them, I bet they took you out from a long way off—maybe with a tranq rifle with a scope.”
Broderick’s hands balled. “Doesn’t matter. I’m a sorry excuse for a tracker if I didn’t realize someone had staked out the Guardian’s house. Sean was just lucky they shot the wrong guy.”
“Well, Sean should have noticed. Or Dylan—Dylan’s supposed to be the smartest and scariest of all the Shifters, isn’t he? Where was he?”
Broderick’s fingers unclenched slightly. “You have a point. But it was more than that.” A shiver went through him before he could stop it. “Waking up not knowing where I was, listening to people trying to decide what to do with me, it was like … like being rounded up again. Only this time, it was me that was getting shot.”
“Shot …” Joanne put her hands on his arms, not liking his grim look. “She missed, thank God.”
“They didn’t miss my dad. Shot dead, right in front of his sons, right in front of his mate. My mother never got over it.” Broderick’s eyes took on a hunted look, the gray going light again. “She was never the same, though it took twenty years for her to die. She went last spring, right before I met you.”
“I know.” Joanne’s heart felt like a solid lump. “Your aunt told me …” Broderick had never talked about his mother, but Aunt Cora had told Joanne the story, saying she needed to know.
Broderick hadn’t ever once mentioned his mother, but not because he didn’t love and miss her, Joanne understood. Because he couldn’t. This was a pain he kept buried, in case it rose up and consumed him.
“I know,” Joanne repeated softly.
“Damn it.” Broderick’s voice was a whisper. He touched her face. “Jo-Jo …”
The pet name was what did it. Joanne left her rigid stance and came at him, burying her face in his chest as she grabbed handfuls of his shirt.
Broderick smelled clean, in spite of him tearing up the hacker’s basement, though he did smell of drywall dust as well.
His arms went around her, and he let out a long, shuddering breath, as though every pain inside him came out with it.
Joanne dug her hands into his T-shirt and lifted her face to his. He didn’t resist at all when she rose and pressed a kiss to his mouth.
Broderick made a low sound in his throat. His arms tightened around her, his lips unmoving for a moment. Then he met her kiss with his own, parting her mouth, sweeping his tongue inside, sealing them together.
The kiss went on for some time, heat transferring from Broderick to Joanne. She’d been cold, she realized, but now she tingled down every limb.
Broderick broke the kiss. He didn’t let go of her, and she felt the Celtic knot disc pressing into her back. “No,” he said. “I can’t …”
“Can’t kiss me?” Joanne let go of his shirt to trace his lips. “You’re doing fine.”
“There’s this thing called mating frenzy.” His voice was low, fierce. “Ever heard of it?”
“Yes.” Her heart beat faster. “I’ve hung around Shiftertown a while.”
“If you don’t let go of me, if you don’t run the hell away, I won’t care about helping with your damn computers. Screw the Guardian, the sword, the stupid medallion, the hacker. I just want you.”
Joanne couldn’t move, as though a force other than the table behind her kept her in place. Her body thrummed with his nearness, the heat of him through his clothes, the hardness that pushed at her from the other side of his jeans.
Joanne slid her body up his, cupped his neck with one hand, and pressed a long and passionate kiss to his lips.
