Review: The Devil's Heart by Cathy Maxwell

Title: The Devil's Heart (The Chattan Curse #3)
Author: Cathy Maxwell
Sourse: FirstReads
Genre: Historical Paranormal Romance
Length: Novel
Release Date: April 30, 2013
Reviewer: Jasmyn

They call her the Unattainable. Lady Margaret Chattan spurned every suitor for her hand, vowing never to marry. The only way to break the curse plaguing her family for two centuries is this ultimate sacrifice. But now her brothers' lives are in danger. Determined to save them, she risks her very soul by traveling into the heart of the highlands to battle a force that has transcended time.

Heath Macnachtan is not superstitious. Laird of the most independent, nonconforming, madly infuriating clan ever to grace Scotland, he believes he has his hands full. And then, a woman lauded as one of the most beautiful in England, arrives on his doorstep with wild accusations and a mystical quest . . . one that just might help him discover who murdered his own brother.

But the real danger for Heath and Margaret is not a supernatural foe, but a very real love that could destroy them both.

The Devil's Heart was a fun quick read, but it did leave something a little lacking.  I couldn't seem to connect to the main characters very well.  Lady Margaret Chattan has earned the name Unattainable by snubbing her nose at all potential suitors.  But she often complains about how alone she is.  While I very much  look up to her for decision to hunt down the sourse of the curse on her family, I wondered throughout the whole story why it took the family so long to try and fix it?

Heath Macnachtan is a somewhat typcial Scottish Laird.  He cares for his family, his people, his land, and the rest can be damned.  Until he meets Margaret.  One of my absolute favorite scenes (and recurring joke throughout the story) was the scene where the met outside his house and "argued" for the first time.  It was very memorable and unique and I wish the rest of the story had kept that feeling.

As a lover of paranormal, I would have liked to see a little more of the witch and the curse manifested along the way.  At times I was almost able to forget that it was "real" as it disappeared from the forefront of the storyline.  This was a very well-written and thought out story - I think I was just expecting something a little different and something a little more paranormal.

Review: Fifty Shades of Alice Through the Looking Glass by Melinda DuChamp

Title: Fifty Shades of Alice Through the Looking Glass (Fifty Shades of Alice Trilogy #2)
Author: Melissa DuChamp
Source: Self Purchased
Genre: Erotic Paranormal Romance
Length: Novella
Release Date: August 17, 2012
Reviewer: Jasmyn

FIFTY SHADES OF ALICE IN WONDERLAND WAS JUST THE BEGINNING...
Eighteen year old Alice recently had an unprecedented erotic experience.  But her adventures have only just begun to heat up.

NOW SHE MUST TRAVEL THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS...
After breaking up with her boyfriend, Lewis, Alice enters a strange fantasy world where every pleasure - no matter how kinky - is indulged.

INTO TOTAL ECSTASY!! WITH TWO EXCLAMATION POINTS!!
Alice is subjected to amorous escapades beyond her wildest dreams, and taken to the very limit of her sexual endurance.

During her carnal encounters with all manner of men and woman, she is teased to tears by a bondage master, thoroughly used in a three way, enlightened to the sensual joys of a female touch, taken to a sex shop to test different erotic toys, given several special piercings, and is dragged to the HDO where she must fight the frumious Jabbercocky to save all of Looking Glass Land.  And you know what we mean by "fight"...

This is for those with dark desires, who wish to explore erotic excess beyond the plain vanilla of everyday life.  Follow Alice through the looking glass, if you dare...

Some may argue that this is not a romance.  I would argue very differently.  There is a heroine and a hero (even if we don't see a whole lot of him). The couple must overcome an obstacle in order to be together (Alice's closed-mindedness).  And of course there must be a HEA - and is there ever!!

Alice's adventure begins with her favorite white rabbit again and she is instantly thrust into a new and exciting world.  The book (which is quite glad to be an ebook instead of a regular book you might trip over if it happened to be lying on the floor) is filled with wonderful puns and even occasionally makes a joke at its own expense.  Yes, the book knows it's a book.  The style of writing is priceless and so very much fun to read.  Alice must learn to be more open minded about people before she can become a Queen and return home.

We see a few of our favorite characters: Humpty Dumpty, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, and a very unusual version of the Jabberwocky - all presented with their own very unique twist.  If you haven't read this series, I would definitely tell you to add it to your "must read" list.  The only downfall is there was supposed to be a third book that has not yet been released.

I love Sparks' Vampire books, so when I saw the opportunity to read one of her historicals I jumped quick and wasn't disappointed!

Out of the hundreds of historicals I've read in my lifetime I can't remember reading an American Revolution themed book. Now that I have I'm hooked :)
Since I'm originally from the South it was pretty awesome to read a fictional accounting about some of the sites that I've actually visited. *Thanks mom and dad for dragging me to those battlefields. lol*

Carolina and Matthias' courtship was hilarious to read. There were so many double entendres that I literally laughed out loud at. I've come to expect great humor from Sparks, but I really think she outdid herself in Less Than a Gentleman. There was a great buildup to their physical relationship, and when it happened it was HOT!

An absolutely wonderful read! I think anyone who enjoys a comical read with some pretty serious undercurrents will enjoy this one as well :)

If I could talk her into writing a historical paranormal romance I would be in heaven!

Cover Reveal: Ultimate Sacrifice by Pauline Holyoak

Title: Ultimate Sacrifice (Merryweather Lodge #3)
Release Date: July 1, 2013

Four years has passed since that dreadful event in the cellar.  Belinda gave birth to a baby girl, none months after Emily witnessed the creature raping Jonathan.  The child appeared to be normal but looks can be deceiving.  Was Emily's attempt to bury the pentagram and trap the evil entity successful?  For four years, there had been no paranormal activity at the cottage or reports of suicides or murders in the area.  Merryweather Lodge was the fairytale kingdom Emily always dreamt it would be.  Or so it seemed.  In just one week Emily was going to marry the man of her dreams, her literal soul mate.  Will her unearthly adversary allow the wedding to take place?  Come to the West Country in England and experience the final act at Merryweather Lodge.

Excerpt from Ultimate Sacrifice:

I glanced at Jonathan to see his reaction. His cleft chin was raised and his lips wore a soft smile. He looked content, happy and oblivious to it all.  I tried to speak to him but my mouth would not move. I was frozen in another dimension, devoid of my reality, as if someone had cast a malicious spell on me.  The unsightly woman’s cracked lips formed a stiff smile; her strange eyes glared into mine. I recognized those eyes, but from where? Something was moving toward me from behind. I could feel it. My skin began to crawl. I was consumed with utter panic and the need to escape. I tried to tear my arm away from Jonathan’s and run, but I could not move. I was shrouded in a dark magnetic force that kept me glued to the ground.

Review: Song of the Fairy Queen by Valerie Douglas

Title: Song of the Fairy Queen
Author: Valerie Douglas
Source: Self Purchased
Genre: Paranormal Romance / High Fantasy
Length: Novel
Release Date: June 20, 2009
Reviewer: Jasmyn

Song of the Fairy Queen in a classic fantasy for people who still like classic fantasy.

It's said of Fairy that if you are in dire need and call the name of one, they will come.  King Oryan, with his castle under siege and his in his arms, could not be in any more dire need.  With only High Marshall Morgan and a handful of Morgan's men at his back, there is only one place left to run, up, and only one ally who can save them.

Kyriay, Queen of the Fairy.

In many ways Song of the Fairy Queen was a refreshing jump back into the realm of wizards, knights, and magical creatures.  Some good, some bad, duking it out for the future of the world.  With many of the elements of high fantasy included, the story read a little bit like an Arthurian legend.  The romance comes from an unexpected angle between High Marshall Morgan and the Queen of Fairy.  The story follows them as they try to defeat the bad guys, protect the good guys, and still find time for themselves.

Kyriay is an amazing character with a quirky personality and a fierce protectiveness for all that she loves.  Morgan is fighting for the survival of his rightful king and heir to the throne, as well as trying to help Kyriay protect her people as well.  The story involves a ton of twists and turns, it seemed like it way maybe one too many for my taste, many times jumping along and ahead with no transitioning to help me adjust to the new setting/time.  The ending makes up for it ten-fold with a truly epic conclusion.  I would have liked to see more of some of the secondary characters and their relationships along the way though.

Review: Light the Shadows by Michelle Clay

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Length: Novel
Release Date: April 17, 2013

*This book was received in exchange for an honest review*

You only get one chance at life, then you die.  The game's over, no second chances.  But she was never one to follow all the rules.

In a strange twist of fate, a woman flees purgatory only to jump into a newly vacated body.  When she wakes in the hospital, she has a brand new life and a whole lot of unanswered questions.  Now she's Micah Munroe, a real estate agent with broken memories of the life she once lived.  A mysterious man who claims to be Death says she's his granddaughter and that she's something called a grimm.

Sully knows she's an imposter because he reaped the soul of the real Micah only a week ago.  He suspects she might be a misplaced shadow, what he calls spirits and vengeful ghosts.  He becomes obsessed with finding out who she really is and just how she inhabited a new body.  He'll stop at nothing to find the truth and send her back to purgatory where she belongs.  What he didn't bargain on was how his body would react to her or how powerful the white light within her is.

When a powerful shadow and her horde of angry spirits kidnaps Sully's best friend, they must work together to get him back.  Fighting their feelings for each other isn't half as difficult as fighting the army of shadows bent on starting a war with the living.

Light the Shadows is the story of a second chance at life - for many people.  Our main lady (we'll call her Micah since we don't know her original name) freaks out when she finds out she's dead and runs away into a new body.  This isn't supposed to happen, and when Sully accidentally runs into her one day, he knows something is up.  But Micah isn't the same, not with another person in her body - and she latches onto her new life with gusto, has a makeover, and decides to make a go of her second chance.  Anna, the guide she met in her brief time on the other side, keeps popping up and trying to offer advice and help out in her own little way (she was a wonderful character!).

Micah's relationship with Sully gets off the a rough start, especially since he thinks she a poltergeist or vengeful spirit.  It doesn't take all that long for the sparks to fly between them, but they have a lot to overcome first, including an impossibly strong shadow bent on destroying the world of the living - starting with Micah and Sully.

There were very few slow spots in this book, but it was never very overwhelming.  I loved that it seemed to move along on its own without me needing to push through parts of it.  The ghost story helping to drive things along was a great mystery, with a few surprises along the way as well.

Review: Infinity's Touch by: Katherine Petersdorf

Title: Infinity's Touch
Author: Katherine Petersdorf
Source: Review Request
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Length: 183 pages Paperback
Reviewed by: Emi

**I received a copy of this book for an honest review**

Grantland Gordon was a vampire who knew full well the extent of his presence, a presence that was predicated upon by the testosterone that was dripping off of him. All he wanted was to find the chosen one and take revenge the Supreme Being who had destroyed his life and stole his innocence with an immortal bite. After over a hundred years of searching, he had finally found her, the chosen one, Kelly Roberts. Only Grant had never thought that his lifeline would be a chipper, I.M. speaking college girl. Now, he would have to put up with her so that could extract the very revenge he seeks, as well as save the world. Only he never thought that he would fall in love with her. Touch, Embrace, Caress, and give in to Infinity…

I'll start by saying what I enjoyed about the book. There was never a dull moment, it was full of action and though there was no full blown sex between the main characters, because of course she was a virgin, there are some steamy tidbits in there for you.  I thought the plot was interesting and enjoyed the storyline and background of the vampires and chosen one. Grant was a cool and sexy character and determined to not let Troy succeed in his evil plan, and get his revenge for what he did to him. Kelly is a young college student who is one of the Chosen gem souls to help rid the world of Troy, his evil vampire brother and his minions.  Together they must fight and find the remainder of the Chosen Ones. What I disliked most about the book was Kelly, she was just too immature, and with all of the abbreviations and TV show and movie references it was just too much for me. There was some spelling and grammatical errors but they didn’t really bother me too much and this was an arc copy so I’m sure (or rather hoping) that they will be adjusted. I’m hoping when the story continues that Kelly matures and faces the oncoming conflict ahead of her with a stronger sense of self a maturity.
Even though the book had a few dislikes for me I would recommend it, it is a pretty good story and interesting enough to pique my interest in the series.
