guardian's loathsome cousin. With no title or dowry, she doesn't have much hope of making a good match. Sebastian Wilkinson, the Earl of Marley, has been the most eligible bachelor on the mart for more years than he cares to count and is very aware of his duty to marry a woman who will add to the wealth and stature of his title. Sebastian makes Charlotte an offer she can't refuse: he will pretend to court her to help her attract more suitors in exchange for her advice about which ladies he should pursue. As they work together, their mutual attraction grows. When they realize they just might be perfect for one another, they must decide whether to bow to the dictates of society or follow their hearts.

Charlotte finds herself in an unfoturnate situation.  When her father died she was left in the care of her brother and sister-in-law who don't seem to particularly care to have her around.  Her sister-in-laws solution is to force her hand and make her marry a very gross and horrid man.  Charlotte would do just about anything to stop this from happening, so when Sebastian takes her under his wing (so to speak) and offers to help her find other suitors, she hopes that he can help.

Or course, this being a romance novel things work out a little differently than any of our characters suspect.  Sebastian's mother has a the right of it throughout the whole story, but no one around her seems to notice.  This was a sweet romance where the hero steps in to save the day at the last moment - the perfect moment.  There is a bit of wit and humor to help top it all off as well.

I think I may have found another favorite hero - Nick Cappuano is just an amazing character.  When he finds his boss dead (in a particularly nasty fashion - although don't worry - it isn't gruesome) he does what any red-blooded man would do.  He gets sick!  It was such a human reaction and it set up a book full of very human characters.  Characters led by emotion instead of logic at times, characters that were doing their best to do good but not always succeeding, characters with a twisted mind and sense of justice.

The murder seems to have no suspects for a very long time.  Then it seems to have too many suspects.  I was constantly drawn into each person as they looked into them.  Several times I was convinced they had found the guy only to find out otherwise.  It wasn't until they very end that I was finally able to put a name to their prime suspect - just a few page before Sam does herself.

It was quite a wild ride - both with the investigation and the romance.  Sam and Nick have some baggage that needs to be cleared up, plus the fact that it's unethical for her to get involved with a witness.  They surpass these obstacles very nicely and are an amazing couple together.  This is a series I'll have to start keeping up with, although since there are eight of them currently it may be awhile before I manage to do that.
