Then one night leads to one bite and he’s forced back into a dangerous world that reminds him he’s still as angry as ever and this time he’s not leaving until he gets what he wants. Niki.

Niki Harris has lived a life of secrets and solitude with no interest in making a change. But an easy one night stand turns complicated and she finds herself marked. Now she has to decide, tell the sexy shifter with a possessive streak a mile wide she’s pregnant and in danger or do what she’s always done–run.
Take a very alpha mixed jaguar shifter and a dangerous female white cougar on the run and you have an explosive tale of passion, determination, possession and some good old sexy time. Be Were is a fun. quick read with two characters who know what they want and are determined to get it, the only problem is one may need convincing of what they need.

Dean is a drop, dead gorgeous jaguar shifter who has lived a lonely existence ever since his world around him came crashing down and his ability to ever be close to anyone seemed impossible until Niki's arrival.
Niki isn't you average female shifter but a white rare cougar who have reputations of being ruthless, dangerous and loners. On Christmas Eve Niki finds herself alone in a bar until fate places her literally in the arms of a shifter who makes her body burn like an inferno.

Before Niki allows herself to accept this gorgeous shifter who may be what has been missing in her life, she disappears vowing never for Dean to find her again. Unfortunately for Niki she doesn't realize that Dean is just as determined to go after what he knows is the best thing to have happened to him in a long time. The only thing is they both have many obstacles to overcome before they can have any chance of making it work with each other.

I really loved the premise of the storyline and Dean really knows how to make a woman melt. My only problem is the the story did not flow smoothly and was it confusing at times as I had to re-read paragraphs over again to figure out how one scene changed to the next. The other thing that I found a little frustrating is the story did not really explain clearly why Niki was on the run and the implications. Yes we are provided with an explanation, but I didn't not feel there was enough world-building. It felt at times that it waa just thrown out there and that was it. I know this is book #5 in the Southern Shifters series, but it should be mentioned by the author whether this book can be read as a standalone or not in order to understand the world and the background of the characters.

Overall, the characters were very likable and I enjoyed watching them spar with each other even when at times I felt like smacking Niki in the head for giving Dean such a hard time.

Widowed rancher Cole Forrester is all about running his family's ranch and guarding his
heart. The last thing he's looking for is love, but when his little sister can't make it home to handle some of her wedding details, he's forced to entertain the event planner, Melanie Simms. Melanie is everything he's not even remotely interested in: she's high-society, complicated, and high maintenance. But when he's stranded with her at his remote cabin in the Colorado mountains, he realizes he's seriously underestimated her. She's hiding something about her past from him, but despite everything, he finds himself falling for the last woman he ever expected, and the first woman to make him want to give his heart and risk everything...

Reforming the Playboy (Passion Creek #1): Review
These books can be read as stand alones - the characters do not cross over for more than a couple paragraphs in passing.

This book is about more than just one man's second chance - it's about a second chance for both Cole and Melanie, just in drastically different ways.  Cole is grump and short and doesn't seem to like anything since his wife died several years ago.  Even though he promised her to move on, he never really has.  He is determined to see the ranch succeed and doesn't need some high society girl like Melanie to help him do it.

Melanie is not what she seems to most people.  Coming from a incredibly wealthy family, most look at her and think "trust-fund kid".  But she left that life far behind her for a variety of painful reasons that she chooses not to speak about - ever.  She's now a struggling business owner just like most people in Passion Creek.

Melanie was hired by Cole's sister to plan her wedding - which has placed her in his path more than he really likes.  Especially since there seems to be something special, different, about Melanie that he can't seem to wrap his mind around.  This is the story of them trying to open up and heal each other's hearts - trying to find a way to move forward and past all the painful memories and moments that have been holding them back.

A very sweet story with some sass that Victoria James seems to enjoy spreading around - and I really appreciate her doing so.  Some of the dialog about short people with blotchy faces was great (you'll know what I mean when you get there).

London 1814...

Drake, Duke of Manchester is searching the Marriage Mart for a perfect bride. He wants a woman who is poised, sophisticated, and worthy of the title Duchess. But most of all, he wants a woman who does not want the useless emotion of love.

Socially awkward Miss Penelope Clayton isn't meant for marriage. A serious botanist, she has no desire to wed, so being forced by her guardian to participate in the Season to find a husband is torture. She'll never fit in with the ton, especially if they discover she's been pretending to be a man within the scientific community.

As Drake's family makes over Penelope, turning her from naive bluestocking to enchanting debutante, he is put upon to introduce her to society and eligible bachelors. Despite dance lessons and new gowns, Penelope is the opposite of poised and sophisticated as she stumbles from one mishap to the next. Why then, does he find it so hard to resist her?
The Duke's Quandary scored points just by using the word "quandary" in the title.  It's a fun but awkward word and it suited this novel perfectly.  Most of the book revolves around two fun (but awkward) people trying to navigate the haute ton to varying degrees of success.

First we have Miss Penelope Clayton.  She is a bit of a hermit, a future blue stocking, and set against marriage and all the restrictions it may impose.  Then we have the Duke of Manchester, or Drake, who seems to have a stick so far up his butt most of the time that I'm not sure how he manages to sit without injuring himself.  When you throw these two together, along with a houseful of unmarried sisters, and you have quite an interesting story.

Callie Hutton does a good job of throwing some fun things their way, but they are drawn to each other no matter how hard they try to stay away.  And no matter how many times they swear not to let anything happen, it does anyway.  This was the biggest downfall of the story - their professions of un-love for each other, their promises to stay away and remain proper - got a little tiring and I think there could have been less of those conversations.

I loved how Penelope was a scientist and it led to a very great sequence of scenes near the end that had me chuckling.  Drake's sisters are all very dear and sweet and trying very hard to remove the stick from his butt - the perfect background characters to help push things along.   Drake's mother is a sweet lady as well and maybe there will be stories of her finding great love matches for Drake's sisters as well.

About Callie:

Callie Hutton always knew those stories she made up in her head would be written down one day. There was nowhere else for them to go. After years of writing articles and interviews for magazines and company newsletters, she decided to tackle writing a book. That was back in 2010. Now with twelve books under her belt, and seven more contracted, the relief at having somewhere to tell those stories is wonderful. She lives in Oklahoma with her husband, adult children and three dogs.

Indie Romance Convention attending author Rayven Godchild spotlight

You can meet Raven and many other wonderful Indie authors this September at IRC 2014

Make Your Awesome
by Raven Godchild

One of the wonderful takeaways I got from attending Indie Romance Convention 2013 was the joy shared by so many authors who love the fact they get to MAKE their awesome. From Christian romances to erotica naughties, Indie romance authors put their passion for words and writing into something they love and then share it with readers the world over.
And I was inspired to revamp Rayven Goldchild, my old pen name, or as some also call it, my alter ego.
Rayven Godchild had a brief stumble into self-publishing several years ago during a rather twisty-tumbly time in my life. Her presence was brief, but never forgotten. Soon after Indie Romance Con 2013, I handed the keyboard over to her and let her click-clack for a bit, maybe kick around some ideas for a bit. She kicked into gear hitting the road from 0 to 60 in three seconds.
The seed was probably planted during one of many great conversations with other attending authors like Jacqueline Rhoades, Julia Sykes, Laura Oliva, Donna McDonald, Kallypso Masters or Holly Roberts. Maybe it happened while chatting with awesome bloggers like Jeep Diva or Laurie Garrison of Bitten by Romance. But Rayven didn’t just have ideas; she had a plan.
The Confessions of a Sex Fiend series was born and I’ve enjoyed every moment of writing!
First is Confessions of a Sex Fiend: Tasting Cherry.
~ ~ ~ Meet Chancellor Baltimore. With a plan to become a mechanical engineer, he was well on his way until he discovered a new addiction that changed the course of his life. As you read this installment of Confessions of a Sex Fiend, you can decide if this change was for better or for worse. ~ ~ ~
This episode is all about firsts:
First base
First touch
First time
And we get to experience the drama of “firsts” from Chancellor’s point of view as he delivers a first of his own.
Let’s enjoy this tale of a sex fiend as Chancellor breaks the rule that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
Shhhhh! Don’t tell anyone. It’ll be our little secret…

Next up is Confessions of a Sex Fiend: A View to Ecstasy

~ ~ ~ You’ve met Chancellor Baltimore: geek-extraordinaire-turned-sex-fiend. In this installment of Confessions of a Sex Fiend, Chancellor, and the reader, take a detour from the vanilla sex life and discover something new. ~ ~ ~
This episode is all about views:
A view to a husband’s fetish
A view to a wife’s open joy to please
A view to ecstasy
And we get to experience the drama of sexual, fiendish craves unabashed as Chancellor takes us on this voyeuristic ride.
Let’s enjoy this tale of a sex fiend as Chancellor continues to break the rule that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
Shhhhh! Don’t tell anyone. It’ll be our little secret…
About Rayven Godchild (alter ego for Angela Brown):
Rayven Godchild is an author of erotica/erotic romance short stories, novels and novellas. Her first published work appeared in a fit of obscurity during a tumultuous time in life. That story, Secret Lilies, will see the light of day again with a lot less stress and a lot more joy surrounding its republication in the very near future. Currently, the Confessions of a Sex Fiend short stories are working their way out into the world, with the first one, Tasting Cherry, as Rayven’s re-debut as an author. A VIEW TO ECSTASY, is due out Feb 21, 2014 and RETREAT BOUND is coming soon.

Writing as Rayven Godchild, I'm making my awesome. I want to encourage everyone to make their awesome, big or small, with each new day :-)

Cinderella meets I Love Lucy in this charming Regency romance

Lord Steelings, is a charming rake and the life of every party. He always has a joke to tell and a smile on his face, all masking a dark secret. If London society knew of his mentally ill mother hidden away in the country, he wouldn’t be welcome at a single ton event.

Sue Greene has never been noticed. The older sister of an exotic beauty, she’s spent her life being pushed to the side. When she has the chance to attend a masquerade ball, she seizes the opportunity. If she had only known donning a mask would change her life…

This was a fairly cute story. I'm not so sure about the Cinderella comparison. (Although, Sue's mom was a pretty big *B*)

I went through highs and lows while reading it.I wish the author would have elaborated on Sue's character a bit more. A lot of what I learned about her was just surface information. I never really felt like I got to know her personality. Holden's situation was something I hadn't read in a historical romance before. It was actually refreshing to read about a different kind of 'emotionally scarred' hero. The situation with his mother definitely didn't go where I thought it was going, so that was a nice surprise as well.

Unfortunately, in it's entirety I just didn't LOVE it. Most of the characters were just sooooo dumb and shallow at times. (I'm talking about the characters that you're supposed to like) It really started to grate on my nerves toward the middle of the book.

Just note that if you're the type of person that doesn't mind that NO ONE notices that Superman is just Clark Kent minus the glasses then you'll be good with this story. If it bugs you, like it does me, then you might want to save yourself a load of eye rolling and skip it :)

Add secrets, treasure, and unimaginable heartbreak for an emotionally humorous read and discover why Dragon's Don't Cry.

Excerpt from Dragons Don't Cry:
“Oh hell no.” I somehow managed to launch myself at the offending nail. It was bigger than the upper portion of my body but I landed on it with one goal… make that infernal noise stop.

His leg shifted beneath me but the claw I held didn’t move. A talon from his opposite appendage pushed, rolling me sideways but I held tight. He lowered his head and one red eye gazed directly into mine.

“Stupid human female named Acasia. Beg for your life.” The gruff voice sounded loudly in my head.

My stomach rolled again but I managed to speak, “Why should I beg when I can no longer take the smell. Dying would be a blessing.” A low groan left my throat.

“Humph.” The sound thundered through the room.

A dragon humphed me, the ass.

“What about the smell do you find displeasing?” he demanded, his voice rupturing every brain cell I possessed.

Was he serious? I couldn’t release his claw because he might continue the racket that drove me crazy but more than anything, I wanted to plug my nose. I looked away from his gaze, twisting so I could see what caused the repulsive odor. I also didn’t release his claw because for some strange reason, touching him calmed me.

What I saw turned my stomach upside down again and I swallowed back the bile in my throat. Partially devoured carcasses littered the floor—a leg here, thigh there—all in various stages of decay. Oh my gods, I was losing it again. I tried pushing away but didn’t make it. More chunky vomit spewed from my stomach landing on his talon and foot, or arm, whatever the hell it was.

When the heaving stopped, I finally answered, “Death, I smell death.”

“Humph. You smell of vomit and fermented drink. I don’t believe you are one to speak.”

“Gods do it, just do it you hulking jerk.”

“Do what, human female named Acasia?”

“Kill me, please,” it came out on a shriek.

“You humans are strange.” This time, his other talon shoved me farther away, moving me from his barf covered claw.

A deer hoof attached to a partial leg rested two inches in front of my face. I managed to scramble to my feet. I saw the dragon lift his middle claw.

Oh no he wouldn’t. “If you do that, I’ll puke on your other foot.”

“You have one last chance to beg for your life.” His jaws didn’t move but his grumbling voice threaded through my mind. Now, it was deep and husky like him calling my name when I waited with my claiming sisters.

Where my bravado came from, I don’t know. “I will not beg. Eat me.”

He reared up on his hind legs, his wings spreading out. I didn’t move, waiting for death—embracing it. The air moved when his wings flapped. For two seconds he hovered and then he rose until he rested on a ledge hundreds of feet above me.

He peered over his shoulder, “I will eat you tomorrow.” With a last look at where I stood, he went over the side, out of my view.

IRC 2013
by A.L. Kessler

I signed up for Indie Romance Convention on a whim and then I asked for attending author status on another. As a new indie author I had no real idea what I was doing. I’d read every article I could get my hands on I talked to local authors, mostly hybrid authors, and I still felt like I had no idea. Every author does things differently in the indie world, but there is so much we can learn from our fellow authors. IRC gave me the chance to, not only, sit down with other authors but readers and I came home with so much information.

Gosh, where to start on what I learned? My head was so full I thought it would explode when I got home. In every writing marketing article and book I read the first piece of advice was: Write a great book and then write the next one! Which is true, many of the authors I talked to or attended panels with said things really started taking off around their third book. I thought some of these people were nuts, they were writing and releasing so many things in a year, but I had been looking at it wrong…This is the world of Indie, not big publishers. If you don’t constantly release things, you fall out of sight and out of mind.

Marketing was spoken highly of and a lot of helpful tools were mentioned, most of which cost money, but as many of the authors pointed out, at times you need to spend money on marketing if you want your name out there. On that note, cross promotions were also highly spoken of. There are so many different ways to take this information and apply it to your writing life.

Pricing! Did you know that the majority of indie authors are under pricing their work? No? I didn’t either until I attended this convention. Covers were also discussed in depth. What to do, what not to do, what to look out for and things to keep in mind, again so much information that I thought my head would explode. Editors were covered as well, one author said she used an average of five for final edits to cover all typos and grammar mistakes. There really is too much to cover in a blog post, but I want to touch on one more thing.

Sitting down with the readers was one of the most valuable things there. I’m not talking about the book signing, I’m talking about the pizza gathering were we all mingled. It was great to sit down and talk to readers, even if they haven’t read my books. Most authors didn’t approach it as an ‘I must sell myself’ event, but sat down as friends with the readers. You can learn so much by speaking to the readers and the bloggers. I even gained a beta reader this way. Just be open-minded and understand that you do not know everything.

The first thing that I told my husband when I got back was, “I have to go again next year. I learned so much.” He’s always yapping about ‘return on investment’ and after sitting down and talking he realized it really was worth it. I’ll be going again this year and I encourage you to as well. There’s nothing more valuable than a convention aimed towards indie authors when you are an indie, or a hybrid author. I look forward to seeing everyone again this year, making new connections, and learning more to better myself as an author.

When cyborg intelligence meets sensual robotics circuit boards sizzle.

Einstein was probably the only cyborg in existence with no interest in the opposite sex, until he discovered B785. With her sensual nature and quirky sense of humor, she draws this cybernetic geek out of his scientific shell and teaches him the one thing he’s never understood – passion.

Tired of being a slave to the military, Bonnie went to sleep one day with the intention of never waking up, but she didn’t count on a cybernetic prince charming bringing her back to life. Coming to terms with her past isn’t easy, but harder still is the realization that even a bionic princess can fall in love.

However, all fairy tales have a villain, and despite the fact the military wrote them both off as a loss, they soon discover they’ll need to fight to have their happily ever after.

GO METAL!

Book One - C791 Reviews: CarolDee, Ollie, Jasmyn
Book Two - F814 Reviews: CarolDee, Jasmyn

Ok - so Einstein has to be my favorite Cyborg so far.  I know lots of people are raving and excited about Seth coming out recently, but I'd been wondering how Einstein's love was going to come about.  He is such a nerdy little guy (ok not so little maybe) and I love his logical approach to everything.  When Bonnie throws his circuits out of whack he wants to go get checked for computer bugs.  It was great.

Bonnie on the other hand, while very smart herself, has quite the little attitude.  She's snarky and just a bit annoying and a whole lot of fun.  I love her verbal sparring matches with Aramus (and they made me wonder about what his book is going to be like) and I think I even chuckled out loud at some of her antics a few times.

Their romance is pretty fast and a lot of the book is about getting her back to the Cyborg home safely.  There was plenty of space fighting action - and plenty of action between Einstein and Bonnie as well.  I love this series more and more every book I finish.

About Joan

When I'm not working on a book I can often be found sipping a  latte at my local cafe and indulging my favorite past-time of people watching.

Growing up in Vancouver, Canada, I always wanted to be a writer. In university I took a detour to study marine biology. I worked as an environmental biologist for many years until the birth of my first child.

I loved staying at home with my kids because not only could I  raise them myself but I could indulge my first love -- writing. I soon realized story-telling was what I was always meant to do.

Twenty years later I'm still hooked on writing. I've published over twenty-five books with Harlequin. I'm now writing for Entangled Publishing and have a couple of self-publishing projects on the go.

I live in Melbourne, Australia, with my husband and three grown children. As well as writing and hanging out in cafes (Melbourne has the best coffee!) I go to the gym, walk my dog, cook, hike, garden, swim and read. I belong to Toastmasters Club and numerous writing organizations.
