She's On Her Way to Safety

It's a sign of Lady Rosalia Armstrong's desperation that she's seeking refuge in a place as rugged and challenging as the Scottish Highlands. She doesn't care about hardship and discomfort, if only she can become master of her own life. Laird Ciaran MacGregor, however, is completely beyond her control...

He Redefines Dangerous...

Ciaran MacGregor knows it's perilous to get embroiled with a fiery Lowland lass, especially one as headstrong as Rosalia. Having made a rash promise to escort her all the way to Glengarry, now he's stuck with her, even though she challenges his legendary prowess at every opportunity. When temptation reaches its peak, he'll be ready to show her how he really is...on and off the battlefield.
This book was an OK read. However given the title of the series "Bad Boys of the Highlands", I was ready for some Hard Core, Hunky Highland Hotties. After reading the book, I think the series could have been titled "Kittens in Mittens". Ciaran was likable to a point, but when it came to this silly oath that he made to his father it was just ridiculous. I can't see any man denying himself a woman he so "strongly desires" as the book suggest his feelings towards Rosalia are.  There is really nothing standing between Ciaran and Rosalia, except this promise that he made to his father to see his younger brother set straight in life.  That is not a valid reason for Ciaran to deny himself the woman he most desires.  Especially when the feeling is mutual. I can only give this book 3 stars and that was being generous because I simply love reading about Highlanders, but this bad boy was more like pecking mother hen!

Miss Lavinia Halls is a member of the Guild of Hybrids, a secret society dedicated to helping women in need. When faced with a terrified new client, Lavinia declares that her client’s fiancĂ© must pay for his sins. The fact that she can’t take her eyes off the man’s kissable lips only spurs her resolve to bring her assignment to a quick conclusion.

Eric Yorke, Viscount Mathieson, wishes nothing more than to distance himself from his treacherous fiancée, but in his quest to do so, he finds himself trapped in the clutches of the unconventional Miss Halls. The delectable yet annoyingly persistent woman seems intent on ruining his life no matter how much he tries to thwart her attempts.

Her efforts to seek and destroy meet their match in his determination to foil her plans, until their struggles collide in a scandal of enormous proportions. Fated together, they must overcome ruin, danger and heartbreak. Will they be able to survive their past or is their future together doomed?
The first book in the Guild of Hybrids series:

I had high hopes for the premise of this book and began reading with great expectation. I am a lover of historical romance with Victorian being one of my favorite periods to read about.  Well into the fourth chapter however, I found the story moving a bit slow, with a lot of the same thoughts being reiterated over, and over.  I found myself frustrated, a bit confused and really hoping that this book would pick up.
Miss Lavinia Halls, along with her Aunt Cynthia, and Sister Larissa, is a member of a secret society of women called "The Guild of Hybrids", who's mission is to help other women in need. By their motto they don't discriminate and help every women when faced with despair. "Payment is requested beforehand" of course. The Society is not a charity after all.

Lavinia was hired by Lady Clara Stratton to destroy her fiance, Eric Yorke, Viscount Mathieson's reputation. According to Lady Clara she caught Eric trying to compromise her friend, and in an attempt to silence her, he mistreated her. Lavinia takes the assignment and sets on a mission to ruin Eric.

The first problem I have is that for Lavinia to not only be a top member of the Guild and a teacher of new members, She didn't verify that the information was true about Eric, before she set out on her mission to destroy him.
Secondly, her idea's of ruination were a bit ridiculous to me.  I honestly do not see how any of her ideas would ruin him to the point of a justifiable end of his engagement.  He was a Viscount, wealthy and attractive after all.

I liked Eric. He seemed like a real caring gentleman, who unfortunately has the wool pulled over him by two scheming women.
I did enjoy Eric turning the cards on Lavinia at most of her attempts to humiliate him, and while there was an attraction between them, I felt no real chemistry between them! Eric an Lavinia seemed to have more conversations in their own minds than with each other.

And if Lavinia, stuck out, lifted or raised her chin one more time I was going to scream!!  And then she squared her shoulders and raised that chin in defiance again. AAAARRRGGGHHH!!! 11x in one book.

Lavinia was stubborn and extremely selfish! We read REPEATEDLY, REPEATEDLY, REPEATEDLY, and again I say REPEATEDLY (yeah, repetition is annoying isn't it) through out the book how "The Guild is her utmost priority, and must be protected". Yet Lavinia runs away after the scandal erupts that she has created, and leaves her aunt and sister to deal with her mess.  Even though it is within her power to put a stop to the scandal immediately. She does not and instead continues in her own selfish, reckless behavior.

and continues to deceive Eric, even after she finds out he was a victim.  Not the actions of a strong empowered woman.

I did like Lavinia standing up to Lady Clara who is nothing more than a lying Thot!
The book took me longer to read than normal because of the repetition.  By page 147 Lavinia is still having rants with herself about her failure, how she didn't deserve the honor of being a member of the Guild.

The suspense finally picks up at the end of the book, and I  found myself engaged to see if the "villain", not to give away any spoilers, was truly working for Clara or if she was in on a scheme derived by Cynthia and Larissa to help Erica an Lavinia finally realize and admit their true feelings for one another.  You will have to read the book if you want to find the answer.

One thing I really wanted to know, was what happened to that thot, Clara(I left off the Lady on purpose)after her true nature was revealed. I would have loved to see her get her just deserts!!  We instead are left to wonder what her outcome was.

Would I read book 2?  Yes, because I think Miss Lake does have talent, and Larissa was more real to me than Lavinia.  I would hope Larissa's story moves along with less repetition.

Carly Toblan had a little too much wine at her best friend’s wedding. Now she’s found herself flirting with a hunky shifter who’s bent on showing her how much he wants her. She’s never been with a shifter but suddenly this curvy girl is hearing the call of the wild up close and personal.

Bear-shifter, Bastien Auberon, knows two things for sure. 1. Carly is his mate and 2. She doesn’t want to want him. Too bad because she does. And he’ll use that unquenchable desire to get her to be his. He’d never used sex to keep a woman before, but in love and war, anything goes.

With her father sending eligible men her way, and someone trying to take his mate from him, Bastien’s ready to roar in frustration. He has a lot to figure out before he can get Carly into a forever state of mind. Claiming a woman had never been this difficult. Good thing he’s so persistent and will let nothing stand in his way.

Reader Note: I hope you're ready for more panty-dropping sexiness. There's hot, sweaty, naughty sex, adult language, lots of violence and blood, a BBW heroine with an attitude and a roaring bear ready to claim his girl. If this is not the kind of stuff you like to read, skip this book. However, if you're a fan of all things naughty and humor, this is perfect for you. Enjoy!
Raging Falls is still a really fun place to visit. Bastien, a bear shifter, is an amazing character. I loved his artistic streak with carpentry. The "cabin" and furniture he created is described in such an amazing way that you can see the craftsmanship and beauty behind it. He's also pretty amazing at courting. I'd love to go out on any of the dates he plans, they are beyond perfect. He's everything you expect in a bear shifter - fierce and strong, but with a teddy bear aspect with those he loves that makes him quite a gentle soul.

Carly I liked, but she was taken way too far. Her father tries to control every aspect of her life and it goes horribly wrong - about as wrong as it could possibly go. Her attitude is a healthy one, leave me alone, I'm a big girl and I love myself just the way I am. But she said it over and over and over again. There has to be a way to show this strength without screaming it from every page. She did have an amazing sense of humor, and I loved all her nicknames for Bastien. They were perfect.

We meet a couple new characters that seem like they are going to be stars in our next trip to Raging Falls, but we don't see too much or our first couple. I missed them a little bit.

The other downfall for this book. It's really only about half of the pages you get and quite short. The rest of the story was first chapters from other books. I don't a little promo at the end, but almost half the book made it feel like I got a little ripped off.

Meet New Reviewer - Vashti

Classy Bits About Me

When did I start reviewing books?
2011 on Goodreads

When did I fall in love with books?
I've always loved to read stories as a kid, especially fairytales, but it wasn't until I read my 1st full length novel in 7th grade that I truly became a book addict!

What are my favorite classics?
Pride and Prejudice  by Jane Austen

Who are my Favorite Classic and Contemporary Authors?
Classic is Jane Austen, and contemporary I have a few but I will try to narrow it down to my top three: Karen Marie Moning, Lisa Kleypas and Jeanine Frost

Which do I prefer: E-books, Paper, Hardcover, or Audio?

Definitely E-Books, paperback is sooo 2005.(haha)  I'm not one of those people who say there is nothing like the feel of a real book.  I travel a lot and I'm always on the go, so taking a ton of books along to add to my already overweight baggage just does not appeal to me.  E-Readers are much more convenient, and the supply is endless and on demand.   If  I am traveling by car, then an Audio book is just the thing.   It keeps me entertained and takes the tedium out of traveling for consecutive hours, especially when stuck in a traffic jam on the highway.  However, my OCD compels me to not only have a hardback copy, but every format available of my all time favorites and classics, such as Pride and Prejudice, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Hobbit and several others.

Favorite Genre?
Historical Romance, Paranormal Romance (love Vampires and time travel) Medieval History and I do love a good Biography.  Houdini!!!: The Career of Ehrich Weiss by Kenneth Silverman was extremely fascinating.

Do I ever re-read books because they were "That Good"?
Definite YES.  I read Jane Austen P&P once a year.  I also have re-read  more than once, Karen Marie Moning's  Highlander and Fever series along with Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress and Night Prince series

Who is my favorite Hero and Heroine?
Jamie Fraser of The Outlander Series Why? Because he loves Claire almost to a fault!!!   He always puts her well being and safety above his own!
Heroine is a toss up between Elizabeth Bennet and MacKayla Lane.  Very different genres I know, but I love the strong spirit, pride and determination of both women.

Best Alpha Male?
Hands down Jericho Barrons of the Fever Series

Biggest Pet Peeve in books?
Stupid  Women!!!  Always whining about being treated as an equal, putting themselves in danger, and always pushing away the man they really want to be with because of society rules or some other ridiculous notion
Audio Books: Horrible accents and mixing accents between different characters
Audio Books: When the CD ends and the listener is not informed this is the end of ie. disk 1, please insert disk 2, instead the disk just loops back to the beginning of the disk.  Not a catastrophic problem I know, but this is this biggest issue that I receive feedback about  from other audio book listeners

What is my favorite series?
Classics: Lord of the Rings
Contemporary: I have a few: Highlander & Fever Series by Karen Moning, Night Huntress, by Jeaniene Frost, The Survivors' Club  by Mary Balogh and last but not least  The Hathaways by Lisa Kleypas

What era would I like to travel back in time to?
Probably the Renaissance or maybe Victorian England.

Which Supernatural talent would I like to have?
Definitely to be a Vampire, with the ability to see my reflection however!

Trashy Bits About Me

Guilty Crush I would LOOOVE to Meet:
1. Barrons (The Fever Series) KMM
2. Drustan MacKeltar(Kiss of the Highlander)KMM
3. Daegus MacKeltar (The Dark Highlander) KMM
4. Aragorn  (Lord of the Rings Trilogy)
5. Rhett Butler (as in Clark Gable)haha
6. Vlad Tepes aka Dracula (Night Prince Series)

Guilty pleasure:
A good book, glass of wine or cup of tea(depending on the time of day) comfy off the shoulder t-shirt, Mozart playing in the background and my relaxing couch!

Guilty Book Read:
50 Shades I hate to admit.  I really loved this book.  Sure  Christian Grey was a bit of a "freak" but I enjoyed how he evolved and healed from this abused and stand-offish character, to become a very loving and emotionally involved Man!  Plus it is sexy as all get out, IMO when a man loves a woman as much as he loved Ana!

Outcast
Determined not to be ruled by Siren law, Ianthe of the Lorelei suffers the consequences of a quickly intensifying Fae Civil War. Seeking refuge from the violence Ianthe agrees to join a quest to aid Winter Summersun, a contender for the Fae thrones.

Outsider
Zander Rush is the half-Mer treasure hunter hired by Winter to retrieve an ancient prize from the sea. He’ll need a Siren’s help if he wants to get close enough to touch the shipwreck where it's hidden. Sirens aren’t known for being helpful; they thrive on death and misery. His only chance of success lies with the unusual Ianthe.

Outnumbered
On their journey, they’ll face storms, sharks, Sirens, Mer, diminished gods of old, and untold monsters of the deep. Zander will learn that his reluctance to learn about Fae history hinders him. Ianthe will see she’s stronger than she ever knew and that she's more than an outcast Siren. Together they’ll find that Life's greatest treasures can’t be held in your hands.
What happens when you mix a half-merman with a reformed siren - all sorts of salty goodness! Ok so that might have been a little over the top, but this was a really great story. Both Zander and Ianthe were incredibly unique, but with just enough of the traditional lore mixed in to merge the two in a very believable manner.

This next edition of The World in Shadows series get very interesting. Winter is on the hunt for an artifact, sending Zander off on the chase. But he'll need a siren (his arch-enemy) to get the job done. He never expects to find Ianthe - probably the only siren on earth that won't kill him on sight - and now he just needs to convince her to join him in the treasure hunt.

Ianthe is so much, I'm not even sure where to begin. I love her personality so much - soft spoken, but quick to laugh, protective but not afraid to fight back or pull a prank or two (quite hilarious). She plays incredibly well off Zander and I just loved them together.

A couple times the story didn't quite live up to what it promised. A scene fizzled out or didn't quite build up the the excitement I felt like it should have. But others....well others went above and beyond and really pulled me away from reality into an amazing world.

A dangerous secret . . .

A treacherous past haunts ex-pirate Anne Bonny’s attempt at a fresh start. Rescued from a Port Royal jail, she’s forced to marry a prominent landowner to retain custody of her children. She vows no other man will ever dictate her life again. But the lord she is to wed is more tempting and infuriating than the devil himself.

An unexpected contract . . .

Addison Blackhurst agreed to wed a fellow merchant’s daughter, solidifying the expansion of his rice plantation and trading business. Not mentioned in the contract? A temperamental, out-of-control widow who is unlike any woman of his acquaintance, complete with not one, but three children. But from the beginning, he’s drawn to her wild spirit and seductive charms.

A fiery romance . . .

Through Anne’s husband-repelling schemes—and Addison’s equal endeavors to ignore them—they find an exasperating, yet most fascinating attraction. When Anne’s past threatens her future, and Addison believes he’s lost her for good, only a pirate’s resolve can determine if love will prevail.
My Bonny Heart is an adventure romance with a hard as nails heroine that can take on any man in a sword fight. I really enjoyed the story and the relationship between Anne and Addison, but the story takes a while before things start to pick up. Basically, you don’t see much action until you get halfway through the book so, please keep reading if the story seems to drag for you too. I would have loved to read more background on both the hero and heroine, more showing me not telling me and descriptions of the settings around the characters. It seems like more and more books are missing these little details, which can make the books come to life for readers. I recommend this story to anyone who loves historical romance with a hard as nails heroine.

Waking up in some strange man’s bed was never big girl Kira Ardan’s goal for the day. Neither was waking up naked. Wait, naked? Someone had a lot of explaining to do and soon.

Luke Lyen is at the height of his need. He wants a mate and he wants her now. Finding the woman meant to be his brings out the lust he’s been fighting for days. If only she weren’t so stubborn, he might be able to get her to understand she is his. Then they could move on with dirty, freaky loving.

The big lion is doing things with his tongue that makes Kira’s brain cells melt. It will take more than a little danger to get this curvy woman to let go of her firm beliefs. She’s not interested in being anyone’s MINE, but maybe he can convince her to be HIS.
This book was quite good, and I really loved the world Milly Taiden as built in Raging Falls. There's hot shifters of all types, bold women, and a good dose of intrigue and excitement. Kira and Luke meet under some very strange circumstances in the middle of a horrible storm - and they're stuck together for better or worse. Of course, this is the start to a very bumpy ride on the way to happily every after.

Kira was great - at first. But after a little while she had some grating moments, but they didn't stop me from loving her and wanting more. She has an interesting back story that really adds to the progression of the storyline and mystery.

Luke was great, but I didn't find him very memorable. He was just another shifter with his animal yelling at him about finding his mate. I wanted to love him more, I have a soft spot for kitty's, but it just didn't click for me. I needed him to stand out more than he did, especially as an alpha.

I will continue reading the series. There seems to be a lot of potential and I want to see it all come to life. The setting, overall theme, and nature of the world have really drawn me in.

The flames of desire fuel a torrid reunion as bestselling author Bronwen Evans returns with another captivating novel of the Disgraced Lords. See why Jen McLaughlin raves, “Bronwen’s historical romances always make the top of my reading list!”

Lady Evangeline Stuart chose to wed a tyrant with a title, or so society believes. That was five years ago—five long years she could have spent with her first and only love: Lord Hadley Fullerton, the second son of the Duke of Claymore. Now Evangeline is a widow, and her soul cries out for Hadley. But when they see each other at last, everything has changed. The passion in his eyes has been corrupted by betrayal. Somehow Evangeline must regain Hadley’s trust—without revealing the secret that would spoil the seduction.

Hadley is determined not to be distracted by Evangeline. He and the other Libertine Scholars are in pursuit of an enemy who has been striking at them from the shadows, and Evangeline’s mere presence could be dangerous. But with one smile, one touch, one taste of Evangeline’s lips, Hadley’s resolve is overpowered by much more pleasant memories. As the two enter into a discreet affair, Hadley vows to give her his body, never his heart. That she will have to earn.
This is the best so far! Part of it may be because I love Lord Fullerton. He has such a sad backstory - and it's something that actually happened to him instead of to his parents, so it was much more pressing and heart-breaking to me as a reader. As the source of his heartbreak tracks him down, things get quite interesting.

These two make such an amazing couple, but there are some secrets and misunderstandings - horrible ones - between them. And, of course, they all come out at the worst possible moment. I couldn't help but cheer for these two as they tried to navigate through their new sort-or-relationship. Things kept just getting in the way. Like big things. Family obligations, honor, reputation, and the by now ever present danger of the assassin.

As in previous books in the series, there is a good dose of excitement as the assassin tries once again to ruin everyone's lives. But this one does not end the same as previous books! I soooo want to tell you, but I can't. But it is very very good. Now to settle in for the wait for book 6.

Elysa Jordan is a feisty and adventurous college student. She’s curvy and never shy about it, and no man has ever been able to resist her charms. Except for one: Kynan Gattesky. He insists they can't be together, yet he seems crazy about her.

Their on and off romance has been driving her nuts, and even Elysa is no longer sure if Kye is the right man for her. She sets out to seduce him one last time, but what happens on that fateful night unravels a whole sequence of events entirely out of her control...and puts her life in grave danger.

Kynan Gattesky has never thought he would fall for a human woman. His family has warned him - werepanthers and other creatures do not mix well. But Elysa is not someone he can get out of his mind easily. Every time he's around her, his common sense flies out the window. And when her life is jeopardized by a series of unfortunate poor decisions, he must rescue her, at all costs.

Will Kye and Elysa manage to get away from the dangers of Regiville paranormal world? And will their growing love survive it all?
This isn't quite as stand-alone as it sounds. There is a good chunk of plot from book one that you would find very helpful to read first, since a character makes a surprising reappearance that just won't have the same impact if you hadn't read the first book. In fact, in might just confuse you a little since some information isn't carried over into book two.

That being said, it was a pretty good story. The strain between Elysa and Kynan begins in book one, and it's only grown in the time before bofore book two. Elysa is all ready for a deep and meaningful relationship with the panther-shifter, but he's set against it - even though he really wants to. She's not a panther, and that's all that matters in his mind, but not his heart. Instead of seeming overdone, it comes off as a true conflict. He's terrified of hurting her physically and thinks he's just protecting her.

But when two wishes go terribly wrong, they find themselves rushing to find a way to reverse them and avoid their deadly consequences. So far, so good. I loved this concept that has a basis in genie lore and it was a great way to throw the two of them together in a quest to save the day.

But, there's a wizard in the background that I just didn't seem to like. His part of the story seemed to be only to cause more problems than they couple already had (and they had plenty). It drew the story out in a way that seemed to distract from the task and romance at hand. I'm still loving the series though. The world Grove has built for her characters is rich and lively with room for plenty of interesting things to happen.
