Interview with romance author Patricia Leever

I had the privilege to review Patrica's new book Cat O' Nine Tails and loved it. So  I wanted to share more about her and the book with you guys. I hope you enjoy the interview.

Hello Patricia. First I want to thank you for doing this interview. Would you tell everyone a little about yourself?

Patricia- Let’s see I’m the stay-at-home mom of 4; I’ve been married to the same guy for 20 years. I like to find the humor in everyday life because being nasty takes up too much energy. I have a degree in high school, a master’s in geekdom and I’m working on my doctorate in life.

Laurie-Would you tell us some of your favorite authors?

Patricia- Naturally I adore all of the amazing authors in my Omnific family, they are all amazingly talented. One of my all time favorites, in romance is Paula Quinn, she was where my romance adventure began and I haven’t looked back. I own every single book she’s ever written and will own every book she plans to release in the future. I also enjoy the writing styles of Elizabeth Hoyt, Stephanie Laurens, Mary Jo Putney and Lisa Klepas.

Laurie- What was the first thing you did when you heard your book was being published?

Patricia- Cried like an idiot LOL.

Laurie- As you know I read your Cat O’ Nine Tails and really enjoyed it. Would you tell those who haven’t read your book a little about it?

Patricia- Well, let’s see, it’s a fast paced love story between a female pirate and the man that has been sent to hunt her down. There is quite a bit of humor, sexy times, a battle at sea and surprises that hopefully you don’t see coming ;)

Laurie- Why a woman as a pirate in this era?

Patricia- Why not? I know it’s more common for the man to be the pirate, wooing all of the ladies in every port but why can’t it be a woman using her feminine wiles to make her way in the world? She’s just doing the best with what she has to work with.

Laurie-What was the biggest hurdle you had to do in writing Cat O’ Nine Tails?

Patricia- Finding the time to write and after stalling 2/3 of the way through, finding the muse to pick it back up again and finish it.

Laurie- Do you have a favorite character out of the whole book? If so who?  And why?

Patricia- Well, of course I love Aeron and Orrin, but I think my favorite is Kale because he was fun to write. Aeron and Orrin were fun too, but there was a humor in Kale that only worked with him.

Laurie- Where is your writing taking us to next?

Patricia- Next, if all goes well, I’ll be taking you in a different genre! Yeah, I’m a genre jumper. I’m working on polishing this next piece up to present to my publisher. This is an Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance about a 134 year old demon hunter in present day Los Angeles named Evelyn Write. I’m also working on a sequel to Cat O’ Nine Tails that picks up with William’s story.

Interview and Giveaway with Author Ruty Aisling

Please join me, WildAboutBones, in welcoming author Ruty Aisling as we talk about their book The Demon of Annwn

Your first paranormal book, Wolf Medicine, was about shapeshifters and an American Indian legend. Where did the idea for your Demon of Annwn, filled with Ancient Celtic and Egyptian ritual magic, come from?
Anticipating the economy and jobs market, my husband and I moved to the rural property we had purchased for our future retirement. We are off-grid and after Thanksgiving there is no easy way in or out without hiking 2+ miles in the snow and ice (sometimes hip deep). I spent a lot of time reading anything I could get my hands on for entertainment. When my husband was laid off the following January, I told him we should start writing "that book we keep talking about." Then we started throwing together ideas. Our initial goal was to have (as close as we could) a book based on historical fact, ancient legends and lore, while incorporating actual magical practices. The book we always wanted to read - fiction with working magics.

We both have had life long interests in the occult and we practice the Arts. His calling is to Egyptian and Hermetic teachings with an interest in traditional pre-Christian European practices. While my own interests have been toward traditional forms of sorcery as well as Native American traditions. The Celtic pantheon, lore and legends seem to pull threads from one another, (just as many other religions do), and most of the time, if you examine the data you find these religions, teachings and practices have a lot in common with Egyptian practices. My husband is excellent at arm-chair detective work, searching for these points and documenting them. There is a lot of my husband in 'Henry.'

In addition we had always wanted to write a novel that would explore the possibility of what would have happened if an actual group or family who practiced the ancient ways had in fact survived the Witchcraft persecutions of early New England. We want to examine how they survived and what they might be like today. This book helps to follow that thread.

While the book was unfolding, many times going off in its own direction despite the outline, we were careful to ensure that our ideas had some basis in fact or history. There is very little in the book that is purely fantasy. We'd get ideas about things and then, when we could get in town and on the internet, research them. Usually we would find supporting documentation on line or in our personal library.

Wolf Medicine was our first book in print. We had finished writing the Demon of Annwn and then, while searching for an agent, we wrote Wolf Medicine. There are two more of 'Ruty's Shorties' that we are working on. The short books were initially to give readers a taste of our writing style and imagination and offered these as free ebooks until the next one was released.

You seamlessly weaved both Celtic and Egyptian rituals together in the book. What made you choose these two to combine?
Of course this would be my husband's long love for Egyptian philosophy and that we both have a strong affiliation for Celtic lore, legend and practice. It is one of the practices that create a natural and strong connection between us, the Earth and the Gods. This is especially so living so remotely in the New Hampshire Mountains. The ability to practice the Arts out in nature, as well as just living here, seems to have heightened our awareness.

My husband also had an affinity to the name 'Arianrhod.' He initially started the drafts of the first few chapters and named the heroine.

The rituals, tools and practices used are very similar in design and purpose between the Egyptian and Celtic traditions. Tying the legend and lore together seemed almost too easy at times. We'd have a thought or dream about the plot or twist and sure enough there was enough basis in fact to support it.

At night (it comes around 4:30pm in the winter) we'd be sitting in our little cabin with an oil lamp for light, writing on our pads in pencil for hours on end, then we'd open our laptops and type a battery's worth of story before firing up the generator to charge the computers, finish transcribing and printing drafts. At times it seemed as if the book wanted to tell its own story.

It was also very important to us that our fictional family have a truly workable magical system, with authentic legends and practices. We wanted the story to also evoke the question, 'What if this were true? Could this family and their practices really exist?' We hope the readers think so. In fact many of the magical techniques described mirror those we practice.

Crom-Cruach's Egyptian appearance as Apep seemed to fall right into place. As cultures merge, grow and change, many of the Gods, Goddesses, demons and faery's take new names, places or merge with other local favorites. Some do fall by the wayside unfortunately. But in this case the pieces seemed to fit well with legend, history and the magical practices.

How did you choose to use Crom-Cruach as the demon for your story?
We love books. When we were first dating we used to take day trips all over the New England area and we shopped at every used bookstore we could find. I even have an old journal with the business cards, newspaper ads, notes, and maps of the places we visited. That journal was a large part of the places we had mentioned in the book.

During one of these trips we picked up Jim Fitzpatrick's, 'The Book of Conquests.' This describes the early Celtic legend of the arrival of the Tuatha de Danann to the shores of Ireland and the First Battle of Moy Tura. His marvelous book with illustrations and rich storytelling, in which Crom-Cruach plays a key role, was on hand most of the time.

The legend tells that Crom-Cruach was called up by the Fir Bolg Druids to defeat the Tuatha in the fight for the land now known as Ireland. Evidently the Fir Bolg's (although related to the Tuatha) got their first and they weren't going to give their claim up easily. Crom-Cruach was defeated by the Tuatha de Danann. That defeat would be something that Crom-Cruach would still be thinking about and he was perfect for calling upon. Being summoned and coming upon the Danann's bloodline - how perfect!

One of our 'must-have' items in the book was a shapeshifter. We spend many hours and days discussing how this could truly work. In 'Wolf Medicine,' because it was supposed to be a short story, the metamorphis was purely fantasy. In the 'Demon of Annwn' we drew on actual occult theory to explain how this change would take place. Change on the astral affects the material. Crom-Cruach was already a master on the astral and had experiences on the material. Peter's willingness to let his astral self be used by Crom-Cruach was as true to reality as we could get. His naiveté at the consequences and preventative measures gave the demon free reign on obtaining control over Peter's actions, thoughts and form.

We had other books and sources, but Fitzpatrick's was truly an inspiration. Out of the thousands of books we still have in storage, this book was at our cabin during the writing. Why I have no idea. I hadn't seen the book in years. Like I said, the 'Demon of Annwn' seemed to take a life of its own with information, resources and ideas popping out of the blue.

There are quite a few interesting characters in The Demon of Annwn. Which was your favorite to write about?
Wow. This is a really tough question. We both took turns writing character parts, plots and the magic. Each character gave us a different emotion when we were writing for them. We had to develop who they were, where they came from, what families they belonged to, what their 'specialties' were, their function in the book and the series, what they looked like, where they lived. That was fun, frustrating and emotional. The process of development invested us deeply with each character we created.

We both wanted the women to be tough and strong. Strong women also need strong men. Arianrhod does react without thinking at times, but she's young and we both wanted to see her grow through the book and the series to come. We feel this character has enormous potential as the series progresses.

Perhaps the best answer to this is the town and community of Whitewood, NH. Although all the characters were fun, evoked joy, sadness and instigated a few heated arguments between my husband and myself, Whitewood was the community and town that we created taking all our favorite elements from surrounding towns here in New England to make a village of our dreams. Naturally our dream village would have dream neighbors!

The Demon of Annwn ended with open questions and several possible directions for the series to go. What are your plans for the series?
We planned for the series before it started. The books would be designed to stand-alone, so if someone picked up a book in the middle of the series they wouldn't be lost or confused. Many ideas were initially outlined for the future books and decided how the series would take shape. The next two books are fully outlined and writing has begun on the second book in the series at this time.

Although Arianrhod is the Banriona and will appear throughout the series, we hope to focus on other characters and keep the story fresh and growing. Even the shorts will have some elements (if not directly related) to the main series. We love Whitewood!

There is also the ongoing theme of reclaiming the lost knowledge and teachings of the ancient world. That will be fun as there are so many roads to follow in this endeavor. Additionally there is a deeper thread that is running through the series. In each book we plan to tease a little out. Part of this was briefly touched upon in the Demon of Annwn but never fully discussed. Hopefully the Gods will be pleased.

The smaller characters were interesting and we wanted to develop them more. Some of them will show up in other books. We even briefly mention the female reporter, Michelle Gavin, in Wolf Medicine. She was supposed to have a bigger role in this book, but we had to cut back as the book was getting out of hand in size. However, most of the characters have an active place in the ongoing story.

We really had a lot of fun planning and writing this book. It wasn't all fun and games. There was a lot of hard work, arguments and rewrites. In the end we were very pleased with the result - even reading it for the hundred-and-umpteenth time. We hope the readers enjoy it as much as we did and we do love the reader's feedback – good or bad! Both of us have been dying to dedicate blocks of time to the other writings in the works, but life (getting ready for the long winter) is slowing us down a bit. Once the snow falls, we'll be huddled up in our little cabin spinning more tales about Whitewood and the residents.

Special Interview with historical romance author Vonda Sinclair + Giveaway

I know your asking. What's an historical author doing on a paranormal romance blog?? Well, if you read her books you'll know I just couldn't resist her hotties from the highlands. LOL.

Hello Vonda! I want to thank you for doing this interview and welcome you to BbPNR. I hope you don’t mind being seen on a paranormal romance blog since you’re a historical romance author.

Vonda- Hi, Laurie! Thanks so much for allowing me (along with my Highlanders) to crash the awesome paranormal party you have going on here!

Laurie-Oh! That’s right, you write about the hot highlanders. Sorry, your highlanderness! LOL.

Vonda- LOL! No problem. I love reading paranormal romance! It's one of my favorites. Sometimes I want to read something really unusual and different. This can give me a fresh new perspective on history. Besides, Scotland has many legends of supernatural happenings and paranormal creatures.

Laurie- Girl, I know you said that right and that’s another reason I do love to stick in a highlander book every once a while, even though I love reading about my hot vamps and shape-shifters, I have to have me some hot highlanders in there too LOL. So, speaking of highlanders, why did you choose to write highlanders?

Vonda- Who can resist a sexy, muscular, highly-trained warrior in a kilt? There's just something about them that's addictive. Am I right? The Highlands have an aura of mysticism that few other places have. Plus, the Highlands of Scotland is a harsh but beautiful environment and the people who lived there in the past, without modern conveniences, would've had to be tough and resourceful people. This makes for strong men (aka heroes) who don't back down from anything.

Laurie- Speaking of Sexy, muscular and highly-trained warrior in kilt. I remember reading one lately he was sexy and highly trained warrior and he definitely hit my highlander hottie spot. I believe his name was Laird Alasdair MacGrath. I have to beg your pardon for the next few questions because this hottie and his brother hit me so hard I’ve been a little absent minded since LOL. I am thinking Alasdair may belong to you somehow. If so, would you tell us a little about him?

Vonda- Absolutely! (The two brothers thank you for blaming your absentmindedness on them LOL! They are glad to be distractions.) Alasdair is the kind of man most any woman would want to marry. He's hot, sexy and great in bed. He's also very responsible and protective. He's a strong leader and will give the woman he loves anything she wants.

Laurie- I have to admit I don’t remember Alasdair wearing kilt * grumbling and flipping pages on kindle, I must have missed reading it somehow * But that’s no biggie for me because kilts only has one purpose and that’s to have access of one detail quicker LOL.  So, I believe this one would fall to his brother, what’s his name again? And please tell me how many women has he been with anyway? If he even knows *snorting*

Vonda- LOL! Alasdair wore a kilt a few times, when he wasn't dropping it and crawling into Gwyneth's bathtub. ;)  As for his brother… Lachlan… he has no idea how many women he's been with. He's a pleasure seeker and I think he might be addicted to it. Now he only needs to teach Angelique about the sensual pleasures. She's a stubborn student but eventually she sees what he's talking about. haha

Laurie- Oh yeah, that’s right, Sir Lachlan MacGrath. Sorry, I should have remembered that one because he has a cover with a blond hottie on it, I love blonds.  Can you tell me did he finely keep his kilt down for one special lady, yet?

Vonda- Yes, he only lets Angelique lift his kilt now. ;) What surprised him was that it wasn't all that difficult. He never thought he could commit to ONE woman. But Angelique makes him forget other women exist. And thanks about the cover! I'm so glad you like it!

Laurie-Oh my, I sure can’t wait to get to Lachlan book this next week, so I can see how Angelique got him all to herself. I love that name Angelique by the way. I don’t see it much anymore. Now, tell me where are your hot highlanders taking you next?

Vonda- I hope you enjoy My Wild Highlander! In the next story, I'm thinking Lachlan's friend Dirk will take us north, further into the Highlands, perhaps even to the wild and untamed north coast. I've been sort of obsessing about Durness recently. Although I won't say for sure it will take place there, I'm hoping, because it's a very atmospheric and beautiful place. Not for wimps either. When I was there in late spring, the weather was very harsh and temperamental--strong winds, rain, hail, even some snow on the higher mountains. But something about it calls to me… and Dirk. He will unfortunately find himself in a hornet's nest of problems and conflicts.

Laurie- I love baking and cooking and I see on your site you have an awesome sounding Scottish apple scone recipe. Would you please share that with everyone here today? I’m going apple picking this week so I know what I will be making;)

Vonda- Yes! I love Scottish foods and scones are yummy.
Apple Scones
Ingredients:
One medium cooking apple
2 cups self-rising flour
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ stick butter or margarine (1/4 cup)
1/3 cup fine granulated sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
up to ½ cup milk
Ingredients for glaze:
A little milk
3 tablespoons light brown sugar
dash cinnamon
Instructions
Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees F

Peel and core the apple and then finely chop. Sift together the flour, salt, cinnamon and baking powder. Then rub in the butter followed by the sugar and chopped apple and mix. Add milk until you have a soft but not sticky dough. Roll out on a floured surface to about ¼" thick and 8" round and mark into 8 wedges. (Or use biscuit cutter.) Place on a greased baking sheet, brush the top with milk and sprinkle with the light brown sugar and dash cinnamon. Bake in the pre-heated oven at 400 degrees F for 20-25 minutes. Serve warm with butter.

Laurie- I just have two more questions if you don’t mind. Why self-publishing? I myself love that author’s chose this way because it gives them a better choice on what’s in the book, covers etc. I am very glad you chose this route. The next question is. Are you going to put these books in print one day?

Vonda- Good questions! I went with self-publishing these two historical romance novels because I knew they were ready. The other option was to let them sit on my hard drive forever. A few years ago, an agent signed me because of My Fierce Highlander. She loved the book and submitted it to NY publishers for over three years. Some of those publishers made us wait 2 1/2 years before making their decision. Others said we love this and it’s publishable quality, but we're not going to offer a contract. I'm sure they have their reasons. I was thrilled when Amazon created Kindle Direct Publishing, Barnes and Nobel created Pubit, and Smashwords came into being, because now I don't have to wait for NY editors to give me a chance. I can make it happen myself. The sales so far of both books have surprised me in a good way. Needless to say, I'm thrilled I chose to self-publish. I may put them into print one day. I've just been learning more about that option, and it's becoming more appealing. Thanks so much for the awesome interview! It has been a blast!

Interview and Giveaway with Author Virna DePaul

Please join me, WildAboutBones , in welcoming author Virna DePaul as we talk about her upcoming book Chosen by Fate (Para-Ops #2) and other goodies.

Author Bio:
Virna DePaul is a former criminal prosecutor and now National Bestselling Author for Berkley (paranormal romantic suspense), HQN (single title romantic suspense) and HRS (category romantic suspense). Her recent and upcoming releases are Dangerous To Her (HRS, August 23, 2011) and Chosen By Fate (Para-Ops Novel 2, October 4, 2011). www.virnadepaul.com

Would you tell us a little about yourself?
I'm a mother of three young boys, a former criminal prosecutor, and a long-time romance reader who loves to travel and see Broadway shows. I was an English lit major in college, so I’ve always enjoyed writing, but I never thought I could actually write fiction. I went through this period in my life where I was searching for a creative outlet. I tried painting, acting, singing, etc, and I was fairly mediocre at all of them. I finally decided to write a romance novel. I had one false start, but then in late 2006 I joined RWA (Romance Writers of America) and met other writers, and that was key to finishing my first manuscript.

Do you have a process or any special rituals in your writing routine?
Honestly, I don’t have a process or special ritual. I can write almost anywhere. However, if I’m having false starts, it’s because something about the plot or characters is simply not working. A friend of mine once asked whether my story wasn’t working because the hero and heroine didn’t really belong together. My mental response was a heated, “Oh, no, they belong together all right.” I couldn’t accept it any other way, but I took her words as a challenge. Finally, I figured out how to make them belong together and the story flowed from there.

You write different genres. Which is your favorite genre to write and why? And what genre would you like to try writing?
I love writing paranormal romantic suspense, but I also like the challenge of writing contemporary romantic suspense, because I have to keep things more grounded in reality. Just for fun, I’d love to try writing a historical; it’s what I find most intimidating, and I love to overcome a challenge.

How did you come up with the idea for this Para-Ops series?
I was a big fan of romantic suspense novels that centered around specially trained teams. I took a look at the paranormal romances on the shelves and realized there wasn’t a single one about a special ops team made up of paranormal creatures. I immediately pictured a book that was a mix of Xmen and Romancing The Stone.

I love the characteristics of the wraiths in the Para-Ops series. How did you come up with such an intriguing paranormal species?
Thank you! I’m so glad you find the wraiths intriguing. I did a lot of research online, trying to pinpoint what kinds of creatures had been written about and what kind of attributes had already been established amongst them. Vampires are often called the undead, so I wanted to create a character that was truly the walking dead with a twist, a female with blue skin and no pulse or brain activity.

There are quite a few interesting characters in Chosen by Fate. Can you tell us a little bit about what’s next for this series? Who, from the book, might get the lead in upcoming books?
The next book I’m working on is about Dex Hunt, the team’s werebeast, and the female vampire he met in Chosen By Fate. The story is about dark forces trying to bridge the dreams of others in order to return to earth. Then I’ll work on Lucy Talbot’s story. Lucy is the team’s mage.

Out of the books you’ve written so far, do you have a favorite hero or heroine? If so, who and why.
I think my favorite character is Knox Devereaux, the half-vampire, half-human hero in Chosen by Blood. He’s also the most controversial character I’ve written. I love him because he was my “first” published hero, but also because, despite wanting so badly to do the right thing, he has many flaws and many lessons to learn.

Who are some of your favorite authors and what are some of your favorite books? And which has made the biggest impact on your writing career?
Three of my favorite authors are Linda Howard, Anne Stuart and the late Karen Keast/Sandra Canfield. Linda Howard is the author who has inspired me most because of the way she balances compelling suspense with a satisfying and emotional romance.

Do you have a hobby or something else to help you unwind and relax when you aren’t writing, if so, what?
I like to read and travel, and watch new movies in addition to Broadway plays. If I can multitask by traveling and squeezing in writing time, too, that’s the best!

Is there something you’d like to tell your fans that no one ever asks you in an interview?
Just that this is a crazy business and most writers suffer it because their biggest dream is to bring entertaining stories to readers. Unfortunately, though most writers start out as readers, writing can be all-consuming so that reading falls by the wayside.

Can you tell us a little bit about what you’re working on next?
I’m finishing up my debut romantic suspense novel, Shades Of Desire, with HQN. The book comes out June 2012 and is the first in a series about “SIG,” the California Department of Justice’s elite Special Investigations Group. These law enforcement officers are the “best of the best,” helping other departments solve crimes across the state. In Shades Of Desire, the heroine, a world-famous photographer, takes a picture she shouldn’t have just before she goes blind; in the story, she must grapple with her new disability and her attraction to the hero, a homicide detective, as well as help him stop a killer who soon puts her in his sights. The next book in the series, tentatively titled Shades Of Temptation, comes out October of 2012, and focuses on other SIG characters introduced in Book 1.

My next Harlequin Romantic Suspense (my debut Dangerous To Her released in August 2011) comes out in May 2012, and is about a woman and her former crush, a homicide detective, who reopens the investigation of her mother’s murder; the detective is the same man who caused the heroine and her mother to fight just before her mother was murdered, obviously leaving the heroine with unresolved guilt about her feelings for the hero.

Some Fun Quick Questions:
Boxers, briefs or commando for your hero(s)? Boxers. I was going to say commando, but there’s something about a sleepy-eyed, yawning, rumpled man in boxers that gets to me.
Tea or Coffee or Soft drink? Chai Tea.
Dog, cat or ferret person? Dog first, then cat. Ferrets seem scary for some reason; probably just lack of exposure on my part.
What are you currently reading? A werewolf anthology by Sarah McCarty.
What’s the first book you remember reading? Lover From The Sea by Bonnie Drake
Do you have a favorite food or place to eat? Sophia’s Thai Kitchen
What’s your favorite fairy tale? Red Riding Hood.
What would your occupation be if you were no longer a writer? An aspiring writer. ☺
What is/are your favorite type(s) of paranormal character(s)? Why? Vampires. They’re usually elegant and charismatic, with a primal, passionate undercoat. Yummy and complex.

Thanks so much for having me here today!

Interview with paranormal romance author Caris Roane + giveaway international

Please welcome paranormal romance author Caris Ronae here on Bitten today!!

Laurie-Hello, Caris! I want to thank you for letting me pick your brain again LOL. First I have to know who’s the couple in book 4? You’re killing me with the cover because so far all of your covers have men with wings and this cover has a woman with wings, so who is it??? PPPLEASSEE!!

Cairs-You should know by now it takes so little to prompt me to share anything about my Guardians of Ascension series.  Book #4, which is BORN OF ASHES, is Warrior Jean-Pierre and his woman, Fiona, who you have already met in WINGS OF FIRE!  I can hardly wait for you to read the fourth book, because of all my warriors, Jean-Pierre is the most tender.  He also has a killer French accent!

Laurie-Why did you choose to write romance?

Cairs-It’s all Jane Austen’s fault!  She may be considered a literary icon, but for me she told great romances!  The truth is, I’m a sucker for a happily ever after story, one in which the hero and heroine have some serious growing to do but once they get there, the passion is amazing and you have a real belief that this couple is going to make it over the long haul.

Laurie-What was the most difficult thing you had to do in writing this series?

Cairs-Raising the bar again and again!  By book #3, I could see how easy it would be to fall into the trap of repetition.  So, even with some of the usual elements I include in each story, like ‘spectacle’ or  ‘bonding elements’ or ‘preternatural power’, I found that it became critical to change things up with every book and to make sure that each story had plenty of surprises for the reader.  So, yeah, keeping things fresh and moving forward in interesting ways has been the most challenging.

Laurie-What was the easiest thing you had to do in writing this series?

Cairs-Well, actually, to be quite honest, *blushing*, I think it’s been the love scenes.  Once I have a strong feeling about my hero and heroine, the scenes where they are together in a romantic, physical way just seem to flow.  But what’s been so interesting to me about each couple is how different they are when it comes to the bedroom.  It’s been a surprise and an absolute delight.

Laurie-As you know I love your World of Ascension series and I know all about the hotness that you have going on in the books *still fanning self*, but I am sure I have a few followers that knows nothing about your series, so would you tell them a little about it?

Cairs-Here’s my Guardians of Ascension soup-stock recipe:  TAKE a band of hunky vampire warriors with wings, ADD heroic women with emerging power in need of protection from the enemy, FOLD IN desperate situations because the villainous Commander Greaves is intent on taking over both Mortal Earth and Second Earth, THEN ADD a world of six ascending dimensions and SPRINKLE LIBERALLY with heinous death vampires who must survive on dying blood or perish.  Finally, GARNISH with one snarky, profane, Amazonian woman, who is extremely fashion-challenged, but who serves as the Supreme High Administrator of all of Second Earth.  Serves:  unlimited!

Laurie-Do you have a favorite hunky warrior yet? If so who?

Caris-My favorite warrior is always the one I’m writing at the moment, so that means I’m totally into Thorne right now.  But when I go back and read the stories of the four preceding him, I’m right there, in love with each all over again!  So the real answer is no, of course not!!!  No favorites here!

Laurie-Now, on to the love scenes *clears throat* no, I’m not going to ask how you prepare for them, nope so not going there LOL. I want to ask do you have a favorite love scene between a couple in this series? I know each couples are different when it comes to these scenes and as you write them they become a part of your life in return they really stick in your head and heart, so I’m hoping you have an extra special scene that really stuck with you.

Cairs-Well, it’s not that it’s my absolute favorite love scene of the series, but it’s one that surprised me in the funniest way.  I had finished WINGS OF FIRE in November of 2010.   But I didn’t work on the revisions until the following March, so I’d been away from the book for awhile.  I’m reading along, and I get to a scene where Antony says, (P. 233) “I’d ask you to open your eyes and look at me, but I have something different in mind.”  (This is the love scene that takes place in the turret room.  OH, you’re blushing again!  Well, you asked!)  But here’s my point, when I read that sentence after four months away from the book, honest-to-God, I had no idea what Antony was talking about.  I couldn’t remember what I’d written!   So, I read on completely anxious to find out what Antony was going to do to Parisa!  I thought that was pretty awesome because it meant that when I originally created that love scene, I was soooo in the moment, that I just went with it.  I think it’s a great scene because he coaxes Parisa to use one of her special powers!  Man-oh-man, I wish I could bestow on all your readers even one of these paranormal adventures!  Wouldn’t that be amazing!

Laurie-What’s been the best thing that has happened since you became a writer?

Cairs-Meeting people like you!  You’ll probably think that’s cheezy, but it’s really true…assuming of course that you’re not asking about the writing itself, which is also an amazing experience.  But what I’ve truly come to treasure are the people I’ve met along the way, those wonderful people who have extended themselves to me in super-generous ways, whether expressing their delight in my work, or whether it’s a fellow author who can commiserate on the darker days, or fans who can’t get enough!  That kind of interaction and feedback has been awesome!

Laurie-Can you give us a sneak peek of what’s to come? Anything juice?

Cairs-Oh, boy, Laurie!  I’ll refer back to the answer I offered earlier when I said it’s all about raising the bar!  When I began Thorne’s book, I wanted something really special that would take this wonderful man from a place of despair and rage, to one of tremendous growth, and that’s exactly what happens to him in OBSIDIAN FLAME.  I mean, I love where he ends up soooo much on every possible level!  But it’s with his woman that I’m pleased the most, because they have a new shared power that takes their passionate love  to a whole new level…*growwlll*!  I’ll take a risk here, and share a couple more details.  As you know, in my series, deep-mind engagement is part of the experience between a warrior and his woman and I’m sure you know how great that is for them, how much pleasure it brings them.  But in Thorne’s book, their shared emerging power takes place within each of their minds and I describe that power in great detail.  But low and behold, that power has another application.  Without going into too much detail and ruining the surprise, I’ll just add that Thorne is able to enter this new power of hers, just as she can enter his, and the result is absolute FIREWORKS!

Was that juicy enough?!?

Interview with romance author Mandy Harbin + giveaway!

Please welcome romance author Mandy!

Hello Mandy thank you for the interview. Would you tell us a little about yourself?

Hi! Thanks for giving me the opportunity. I’m in my mid thirties, married with some teenaged kids, and have a couple of cats—one which likes to walk around and meow at the top of his lungs when I’m trying to write.

When did you start writing?

I’ve always had a love of writing. When I was in high school, I wrote poems and song lyrics, which I’d probably run and hide if I’d actually saved those and read them again. I studied writing in college but also focused on professional and technical writing and applied that to my day job. Over the years, I’d started a few different books, but never finished them. But about four years ago, I got an idea for a young adult series that just wouldn’t leave me alone. I did a bunch of research and started writing, but put it aside since I’d gone back to school to work on my master’s degree—my way to beat the recession. But two years ago, I decided enough was enough; I wasn’t getting any younger, and I wanted to write. I pulled that manuscript back out and finished it within a month, and then I wrote two more books in that series within the next couple of months. I’ve been writing non-stop ever since.

Do you do something special to get into your writing grove?

I love listening to music. Sometimes just the tone can inspire certain feelings and get the creative juices flowing. I mostly listen in the car and when I’m working out, but when I write, I prefer quiet. I don’t always get what I want, though.

Why did you choose to write novellas?

After finishing the first three books in my young adult series, I took a step back and really looked at what I liked to read. I knew I loved romance, but I noticed that many of my books were nowhere near as large as the young adult novels I’d just finished. And most of them—large and small—were erotic romances. Surrounded by Woods was the first erotic romance novella I wrote, but I originally wrote it to submit to another publisher who had an open call for books under 15,000 words. The first draft came in just under that requirement, but I felt like it just wasn’t enough. I knew I could tell a quality story and keep it short, so rather than submit the short story, I decided to go back and expand on it without keeping to any word length requirements. When I finished, it was almost twice the original size, but I was much happier with the final manuscript.

Who are some of your favorite authors?

Now this is a toughie since I love to read, and I know I’m going to forget someone, but I love Megan Hart, Lauren Dane, Crystal Jordan, Shelli Stevens, Shayla Black, Maya Banks, Evangeline Anderson, Jaci Burton, Lora Leigh… The list goes on and on.

Now, let’s get into your book Surrounded by Woods. Would you tell those who haven’t heard of it a little about it?

Sure. Mikaela Patterson is an attorney who’s recently broken off her engagement. Since the sting is still a little new and she’s a prideful attorney, she doesn’t come right out and tell her colleagues the wedding is off. Her boss assigns her to work a two week project on location with one of his clients, Thomas Woods, because he’s unavailable to go out to the Woods estate himself. When she tries to pawn it off on the newbie in the office, her boss tells her that Mr. Woods doesn’t allow available women on his property. Mikaela fits the bill because she’s engaged. Of course she’s not, but she doesn’t tell him this.

Josh Woods is Thomas’s oldest son, and he’s immediately drawn to Mikaela when she arrives. He knows his father would never allow an available woman on the property since they are mountain lion shifters with the instinct to mate with any available woman. Only that instinct has a black widow effect, since a forced mating causes the female to attack after she’s been turned.
Josh and Mikaela fight the attraction brewing between them for their own reasons but denial only lasts so long.

There are 5 total brothers and one single father are you planning on making this a series?

Yes! All living brothers will have their own book, so there’ll be at least four books total. I haven’t decided if I’m going to write one on the father.

Do you have a favorite character in the Woods family yet?

Hmm. Right now it’s Toby because, well, I’m currently writing his story. I also like Jack because he’s more arrogant than the others and that’s fun to write. I’m looking forward to doing his story—it’s always fun when a strong woman can go toe-to-toe with someone like that.

What are you working on now?

I’m finishing up book two in the Woods family series. Then I’m going to write a novella that is a follow up to another book I have being released in October, Digital Possession (contemporary erotic romance). After that I’ll be writing the third and fourth books in the Woods family series back to back.

Anything else you’d like to add?

When I decided to write this book, I’d been reading a lot of paranormal books, but I wanted to do something different. I not only wanted an animal that hadn’t been heavily written about—nothing against wolves, I love ’em, too!—but I also wanted a premise that felt different. The whole black widow concept appealed to me because it’s not a simple issue a couple has to overcome to get to that happily ever after. What good is getting a mate if she’s just going to kill you as soon as you’ve mated with her?

On another note… Remember that newbie, Krista, mentioned at the beginning of the book? She’ll be your next heroine.

Fun questions
What’s your favorite color?
It changes, but right now it’s blue.
What’s your favorite food?
I love to eat, and I’m not picky. Pizza is always yummy, but if it’s a special occasion, I like to have sushi. If we’re talking junk food here, then it’s cheesecake, hands down.
Do you have a favorite TV show at this time?
I don’t watch too much television. If I have free time, I’m usually reading. But I do love True Blood! No matter what I’m in the middle of, I always stop what I’m doing and watch it. And I have it set to record just in case I miss it for some crazy reason.
Favorite movies?
I love Pretty Woman. It was the first movie I’d ever watched where I rewound the tape (remember those days?) and watched it again. I also love When Harry Met Sally and the Princess Bride. I’m a sucker for a good romance.

Interview and Giveaway with Author Claudy Conn

Please join me, WildAboutBones, in welcoming author Claudy Conn as we talk about her ShadowLove Stalkers and other goodies.

Tell us about yourself?
Putting pen to paper came easy. I needed to write—I loved to write, thus, writing was a given. Going through the process of creating a story—putting it together into a first novel and then presenting it to the world—quite another thing. Just out of school and painfully shy (and I really still am) knocking on doors and asking someone to read my book was (for me) a death defying feat.

I loved English—Irish—Scottish history and had traveled just enough to know the ‘look and feel’ of their beautiful countries. Hence, my regencies such as "Spring Gambit", "Sunday’s Child", and “Myriah” were born. Out of my regencies came my larger and sexier historical romances, such as “Cassandra”, “Blades of Passion”, and “Fire & Desire”, most of which were published by Fawcett. Many of my other titles can be checked out when you go to the links listed below.

I am a multi-published author of more than 40 mass market bestselling regency and historical romances. Took a break that lasted a few years and when I came back it was to the genre of paranormal/fantasy. Love it!

While I have a fanciful imagination, I am a Capricorn—‘sure and steady’, and the obvious conflict leaves me jumbled. I have a computer, yes (invaluable), but I still jot down ideas on a scrap piece of paper, or a napkin in a restaurant. My imagination follows me wherever we go and sees so much more than meets the eye, and very often my husband will ask, ‘where are you now, baby?’

My dad was the one who clicked into my brain early on, and opened my mind to a world where a girl/woman could be so much more than ‘pretty in pink’. He told me to soar, and soaring for me, was writing.

We love horses and riding and when we migrated from New York to North Carolina we brought our barn with us—and yes, I’d rather muck out a stall than clean a house!

My Irish, blue-eyed husband had to have a wolf and so we brought in our little hybrid wolf pup to our home. She is ¾ wolf/ ¼ German shepherd (honey colored), and we named Cherokee. Her 3 yr. old son (Rocky) is huge and eats everything and anything he can find and weighs more than 170 pounds!

Do you have a process or any special rituals in your writing routine?
I day dream and everything I see turns into a story in my head.

What is/are your favorite type(s) of paranormal character(s)?
I love the Fae of Ireland and there is a world of information about the history/legend of their coming to Ireland.

You write several different genres. Which is your favorite genre to write and why?
A few years ago, I would have said historical. Now, contemporary paranormal/fantasy is what I am in love with. It allows so much more creativity.

How did you come up with the idea for ShadowLove Stalkers?
It is funny because people will ask me that question and the truth is, when I write, I start with researching a subject such as vampires, vampire movies, etc. and when my research comes together and begins to click off different scenarios in my mind…a story is born. I don’t make an outline, but I have characters who tell me who they are and then I let them be who they are as the story evolves.

There are quite a few intriguing characters in this book. Can you tell us a little bit about what’s next for this series? Who, from the book, might get the lead in upcoming books?
Damon has the lead in the next book, Shadowheart-Slayer which will be out in September. He and the heroine Nikki are very strong characters at the opposite end of the poles…he is a vampire, she is a slayer.

Out of the books you’ve written so far, do you have a favorite hero or heroine? If so, who and why.
Yes, I love Prince Breslyn and he appears in a few of my Legend series. Why—you will have to read my Legend books, Spellbound and then Shee Willow and then you will know why. He is the ultimate male in every imaginable way. I will, in fact, be giving him his own series. He has insisted I tell his story which spans the centuries, and I have agreed to allow him to author only the Prologue of each of the 4 novellas I will write about him! LOL

Are you working on anything else right now you can tell us about?
Yes, I am just finishing up Free Falling-Legend which is scheduled for October release, working on Breslyn’s novellas and I have a book called, Darklove which The Wild Rose Press will be releasing in November. Very exciting year.

Who are some of your favorite authors and what are some of your favorite books? And which has made the biggest impact on your writing career?
I love Karen Marie Moning, her Highlander series and her Fae series. I love Georgette Heyer and her regencies. Nora Roberts is a master author. Dean Koontz, S. King and James Patterson. I am all over the board.

Is there something you’d like to tell your fans that no one ever asks you in an interview?
Yes—I love them—hearing from them, finding out what they like best, so yes, want them to know and whenever they want they can contact me at my email: claudyconn@centurylink.net or get my news at my website, http://claudyconn.embarqspace.com

Some quick fun questions:
What are you currently reading? Witch Born by Aimee Maguire
What’s the first book you remember reading? Nancy Drew
What’s your favorite cartoon character? I like the old Disney movies…and of course Daffy Duck.
What would your occupation be if you were no longer a writer? Easy, I would work as a zoo keeper.
Dog, cat or ferret person? I love dogs and have a wolf and her son who is half German Shep. Love cats and just lost my 22 year old sweetie. Have horses and love to ride.
Tea or Coffee? And how do you take it? I am coffee in the morning, maybe tea in the afternoon especially if you offer a pastry to go with it.

Boxers, briefs or commando for your hero? I like boxers…black for my hero. But hey, commando ain’t bad.

What’s your favorite movie of all time? Hmmm. Hard one, because I love the classics—so many of them, but as a series, I adore the Harry Potter (I have never grown up). I loved the Twilight books and I thoroughly love the movie series as well. The Pirates of the Caribbean, Scent of a Woman…I love the Ghost and Mrs. Muir and always cry…

What name have you been dying to use as a lead character, but haven’t found the right fit yet? Wow—that is difficult because I always know the name as soon as my character presents his resume to me! But, I will tell you that I love the name Storm for a hero and haven’t yet decided to use it. Will, I think though, soon… Would love suggestions for hero names!

Thanks so much, Claudy, for taking the time for this interview.

Interview and Giveaway with Author Clarrissa Lee Moon

Please join me, WildAboutBones, in welcoming author Clarrissa Lee Moon as we talk about her Nightwolves Series and other goodies.

Clarrissa's Bio:
Clarrissa Lee Moon would like to live like a tumbleweed going from different states often. An avid reader and owner of more books and DVD’s then any used book shop; she also enjoys Martial arts, swimming, riding Harleys and raising pure bred Japanese Chins. She has written as a journalist for two E-magazines. Author of Memoirs of The Nightwolves Series and Celeste Nites Novelettes. She considers herself unique, unusual and unconquerable!

Would you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m a single mom of three boys who are all grown now. Still single and loving it? I stay active with my dogs, swimming and martial arts. I have a lot of hobbies such as making jewelry, painting and dancing. I plan on doing a lot more traveling now and seeing more of the world. Especially tropical places?

Do you have a process or any special rituals in your writing routine?
I have to play a computer game to relax my mind. I need my coffee, some snacks and my player music list of specific songs, in order, to get me in the ‘mood’.

How did you come up with the idea behind the Nightwolves series?
The year I started writing novels in a more serious manner, I was bored out of my mind. I had bills and a whole host of things going on in my life that just weren’t very fun. I was playing a computer game, but the other half of my mind was thinking about some grand adventures I would rather be doing. If I was a vampire what would I do? Who would the bad guys be? How would I defeat them? Would I have partners? Night after night, the story grew in my head and then I decided to write it out in my word program. That’s when it all flowed out like water. Nightwolves Coalition and Nightwolves on the Prowl were written in the month of March 2010. And now the adventures continue!

There seem to be several different themes, conspiracies and other things going on in each book, how do you keep track of them all?
Once all seven books are written you’ll see where it all actually ties into one grand conspiracy. It’s just separate sections all working towards the same goal. New World Order. There are sub-theme and plots going on because life itself isn’t just black and white. In real life, there are many things going on where some are affecting the job and some are just taking up time, but this is real life. Rarely is there just one thing going on in a person’s life. I wanted Nightwolves to seem as real to life as possible, so I added many complexities to the storyline.

What you think readers will like best about this series?
Oh I hope they like it all actually. The main thing? The fact that there are sub-plots talked about that aren’t in most mainstream books. Issues that some people really do have to deal with such as homosexuality, alternative life-styles and tolerance for different beliefs systems. This series isn’t your run of the mill series. Sure there is action, violence, sex but there, under it all, are real little known about problems some have to deal with and I hope Nightwolves can enlighten those who aren’t familiar with these situations.

Of the Nightwolves series books you’ve written so far, do you have a favorite hero or heroine? If so, who and why?
Wow, hard to pick just one. Each has their own personality traits that makes them stand out from one another. Cat is absolute in her protection of her children. Demitri is absolute in being there for Cat, no matter what else is going on. Antonio understands her mental issues and does everything he can to heal the mental wounds. Andre is always watching her back or her children. Her Kla’ din mates too, are always there for her in their own special ways. O’Hara has his own brand of honor which is very admirable. Shamus is crotchety but serves Cat with every ounce of his powers. It would be really hard top pick just one above all. Each of them is very special in their own ways.

I love that Cat, the female lead, is in her 40s. Please tell us another quirky thing about her.
Because she is in her forties, mentally speaking now (since the vampirism brought back her youth) most 40 something’s have a soapbox they like to get on and Cat is no different. Luckily, her soapboxes are interlinked with the whole New World Order thing, but we don’t find that out until later in the series?

What is your favorite scene in the series which you would never consider cutting?
In Nightwolves on the Prowl, Cat just got done fighting Ja’ Callum and O’Hara is baiting her. He says she cheated, she disputes it. It’s a very funny scene and should always be kept in there to show the camaraderie between the two leaders.

Who are some of your favorite authors and what are some favorite books you’ve read?
I have a very eclectic taste in reading. I read everything from sci-fi to paranormal to text books and news articles around the world. But for the sake of this question I will pick my favorite author in the paranormal industry which is Sherilynn Kenyon and her Dark Hunter series. I also enjoy Charliane Harris (everything she has written) and Christine Feehan, her Dark Carpathian series.

What name have you been dying to use as a lead character, but haven’t found the right fit for yet?
I have such a huge cast of characters that this has not been an issue?

Can you tell us a little bit about what you’re working on next both with the Nightwolves and Celeste Nites series?
I am working on Nightwolves Dawn to Dusk- The Semi Prequel which has been a real challenge. I use a slightly different writing technique in each book but NDTD is especially challenging because it goes from past to present often. It is very hard to keep the sub-plots flowing evenly and keep track of who did what, when and how exactly it is affecting one another. Once you read this particular book you’ll understand the ‘echo’ effect. It has made this book very hard to write and very complex- more so then the first three books.
Celeste Nites Second Trilogy is almost done! Celeste is pushed up against the wall in some of her decisions and has to flee to France in the hopes of getting some help. She still doesn’t believe her current lovers are up to the task. In trying to find help she actually gains more problems. And her love life gets even a bit more complicated. And steamier….if THAT’S possible after the infamous limo scene in Hunting Celeste LOL It’s a very exciting trilogy both in the loving department and action!

Fun Questions:
Spoilers or no spoilers in reviews? I think spoilers are great actually. They are like snippets which can get someone interested in the series if it’s a scene that’s intriguing enough!
Boxers, briefs or commando on your hero(s)? Oh Commando most days, but those silk briefs can be very sexy too. Andre likes those from time to time?
Prefer Cats, Dogs or Ferrets? Dogs.
What’s your favorite kind of story to get lost in? I love pirate romances the best. I have a fantasy of being abducted by a pirate and making love in the captain’s quarters- oh yeah!
What are you currently reading? I am actually re-reading my own work and writing down the sub-plots so I can tie up loose ends nicely. I am trying to find time to read the latest Sookie Stackhouse book by Charliane Harris.
What is your favorite movie and/or TV show? Kung Fu Panda! Underworld trilogy, The Mummy’s Trilogy and Indiana Jones Trilogy. For TV…it’s been banned in protest of the greedy profiteering gluttons and lying news casts. I haven’t paid for cable for over 10 years now. I use the money instead to buy the DVD seasons and watch with no 20 minutes of irritating commercials to get me out of the mood of watching a show. HA!

What do you do to unwind and relax? Read a book! Have my coffee, make cookies!
Do you have a favorite food or place to eat? Sushi Gardens is the bomb! I also enjoy very rare meat!

Thanks so much, Clarrissa, for taking the time for this interview.
