Thanks so much to Laurie for inviting me to stop by during my TEMPTED blog tour! TEMPTED, the third book in the Eternal Guardians Series, released last week and I’m thrilled readers are enjoying it so much. Readers first met the heroine, Isadora, in books one and two in the series – MARKED & ENTWINED. Over the past year I’ve had several emails from fans telling me they didn’t know what to think of Isadora at first. She’s nearly 300 years old, yet she acts like a child in many ways. She’s timid, she’s mousy, she’s afraid of the Eternal Guardians, and everyone in the kingdom knows she’ll make a horrible queen when her father (the king) eventually dies. How on earth could she make a good heroine?
Enter the job of the author—to make you fall in love with a character you are sure you’ll never “get”. Isadora’s transformation makes her unique in this series. In MARKED she has no backbone. She lets everyone walk all over her. In ENTWINED she grows a little bolder, but that boldness comes off as abrasive as she attempts to flex her muscles. It isn’t until TEMPTED that she comes into her own and realizes what she’s capable of. And watching her finally live up to her potential…well, that’s one of my favorite parts of the book.
Not all heroines are “kick-ass” in the traditional sense of the words. Sometimes, they can’t be. Isadora was raised in a patriarchal society, by a father who only ever wanted a son and ended up with her. She’s been taught that women are inferior, that men hold the power and that her opinion doesn’t count. She’s been cloistered her whole life, and her father’s been trying to marry her off to a Guardian for as long as she can remember, to ensure that she won’t rule when he dies. It makes sense she’d be mousy and shy. But she doesn’t stay that way. And even though her character arc doesn’t turn her into a “kick-ass” heroine with blades swinging and guns blazing who decapitates daemons like the Eternal Guardians, that doesn’t mean she isn’t as strong—maybe even stronger—than they are. There’s a saying that behind every great man there’s an even greater woman. That’s never been truer than it is in TEMPTED with Isadora.
I believe in staying true to a character and letting their growth happen organically. I knew from page one of MARKED that Isadora was never going to be a “kick-ass” heroine like so many readers expect. It wouldn’t have made sense to her character arc and readers wouldn’t have believed that sort of change in her. That doesn’t mean I’m opposed to kick-ass heroines (on the contrary…the heroine in ENRAPTURED, book 4, is, by definition, a serious kick-ass heroine in every sense of the word). I love a good tough girl as much as the rest. But sometimes toughness comes in unexpected ways. Sometimes it comes in leadership and standing up for what’s right. And sometimes it comes in not being afraid of your destiny and finally living up to who you were meant to be. In that way, Isadora’s as kick-ass as the rest.
To celebrate the release of TEMPTED, Sourcebooks is giving away two copies of the book! (US/Canada shipping only). To be entered, leave me a note telling me what your favorite type of heroine is.

Shockingly I've never heard of this series - don't hate me!! But I am going to buy it and give it a go, it sounds interesting. Right up my street ;)
ReplyDeleteHi Elisabeth,
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your series. I picked up Marked on a whim and fell in love by the 2nd page. I immediately loaned it to every reader I knew lol. I prefer the "Isadora" type heroine. They are the ones that continue to surprise you with every turn of the book. Makes for a very interest and entertaining read.

My favorite type of heroine is generally the "kick-ass" heroine. Really, I just like my heroines to know who they are (they don't ALWAYS have to be kick-ass) and be proud of themselves. I like heroines who have confidence, and generally the kick-ass heroines have confidence. I also do like to see characters grow into themselves, that's always enjoyable to read! Thanks so much for the giveaway! Book Savvy Babe

I like a self-assured, independent, kick-ass heroine. I like the ones that don't doubt themselves the entire story. I like the ones that have good self esteem. And I like the ones who aren't perfect.
ReplyDeleteGood reading ~ Escape by Fiction
I like a strong independent heroine but not too independent; one who knows her limits and is not afraid of asking for help.

I must have been living under a rock not too have heard of this series but I am fixing that right now. I just added all the books in the series so far to my wish list. *I feel a shopping spree coming fast lol*
ReplyDeleteMy favorite type of heroine is one that compliments the hero very well. Their personalities have to match even if they clash at first, but you can see the lust bubbling right below the surface.

I like a tough heroine. But she should have a soft side too. Thanks for the giveaway.

My favorite type of heroines are those that are believable. I like them kick-ass or soft, but strong in other ways. I have to see the strength somewhere to believe she'd get the guy in the end, but as long as she's written well, I'll like her! Great interview! :)
ReplyDeleteI like the kick-ass heroine.
ReplyDeletemythic021@gmail.com
If we're talking historicals, I love the bluestocking heroines--translated to modern times, I think they'd be confident and self-assured. I really enjoy it when the heroines have a quiet strength about them.
ReplyDeleteI like heroine's that are spunky and can take care of themselves, but who aren't afraid to ask for help.
ReplyDeleteiqb99@yahoo.com
My favorite type of heroine is one that can kick butt and basically take care of herself. She has to be smart and being humorous is a plus too.
ReplyDeletevsloboda(at)gmail(dot)com
I like heroines who are true to themselves, know what they want and go for it. They achieve their goals even if they have big obstacles along the way. I like heroines who have to struggle for what they want, but they don't back down due to the struggles...they keep moving forward.

I would really love to win a copy of the book. It sounds great. I like a heroine who can kick butt but is also soft on the inside. One who is 35+ and has curves without a perfect figure. One who doesn't fall apart and while she may have baggage, isn't all angsty about it.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the release of "Tempted" Elizabeth! My favourite type of heroine is a spunky, doesn't believe in love one, not because she isn't worthy of love but because life hasn't been kind to her. It will take a worthy male to win her heart and teach her about love!

I love sassy kick-ass heroines!!

My favorite type of heroine is smart, witty, determined and feisty.

I like a heroine who is smart, self sufficient and who can support her man. I hate the whiny, needy types!
ReplyDeletejepebATverizonDOTnet
My favorite type of heroine is a strong, independent woman who can hold her own with an Alpha male and kick some ass when she needs to.

Thanks for the giveaway! I like a heroine who's strong independent but also quirky and easy to like.

Hi Artemis, thanks so much for the great note! I'm so glad you're enjoying the Eternal Guardians!
ReplyDeleteTo answer your question, I just posted info about the hero and plot for ENRAPTURED on my Facebook page. You can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/notes/elisabeth-naughton/enraptured-sneak-peek/205265896204652
I want my heroine slightly sympathetic but with a hard core shell of kick arsery. No whinning moping heroines for me, strap the boots and the gun snd get cracking on the evil.

Hi Madame D - thanks for the comment, and I hope you enjoy the Eternal Guardians!
ReplyDeleteKayla - LOVE hearing that! It makes my day to know readers are as in love with this world as I am. Thanks for making my night!
Book Savvy Babe - I like watching characters grow into themselves too. Thanks for stopping by!
Escape by Fiction - I agree. Perfect characters are boring.
ReplyDeleteDiane - Asking for help takes work, doesn't it? Great suggestion!
Mary - LOL! So glad you've come out from under your rock! I hope you get that wish list and enjoy the Eternal Guardians!
Bethie - I like tough heroines too. I've written plenty, but you're right, they have to have a soft side too.
ReplyDeleteSiohban - Thanks so much! You summed it up perfectly. She has to have strength to make her believable - whether she's kick-ass or not doesn't matter so long as she's grown as a character along the way. Otherwise...why would the guy want her?
vanessa - thanks for stopping by!
ReplyDeleteJulie - I like the quiet-strength heroines as well.
Danielle - Spunky, can take care of themselves but aren't afraid to ask for help - love those too!
Victoria - being able to laugh is always a good trait.
Linda - determination. Yep, I agree. A must in a heroine.
ReplyDeleteWild About Bones - a REAL woman. Yes, i agree.
Na - I think you just described the heroine in my first book, STOLEN FURY! Thanks so much for stopping by. ;)
Robin K - another vote for kick-ass!
ReplyDeleteMarlee - I like feisty too. The heroine in my next book, ENRAPTURED, is a feisty heroine.
Jen - a take charge, heroine. Love it!
Barbara - great description!
Poisonivyred - Quirky is fun! Thanks for stopping by!
I love this series.
ReplyDeleteI like when they are strong, self willed but willing to let someone else (hero) take care of them as well.

Hi Elizabeth, congrats on your latest release.
ReplyDeleteI totally love this series and the Heroes/Heroines. I too admire feisty and tough Heroines. But soft enough underneath to have no problem asking for help and letting the Hero be the Alpha male. :)Thank you for this opportunity. Love Theron and Zander. GFC follower under Lucky47

I love the rough, tough, independent kick butt type of heroines. But then they have their softer side also.

I like heroines somewhere in the middle. You know, ordinary women. I don't want a TSTL heroine or one so meek that they totally depend on the hero, but I also don't want the herione to also be so strong/hard that it's hard to relate or like her.

i love strong heroines! ones that can fight beside their man, that have a sense of humor, but can be mean when needed!!

The kind that isn't a Mary Sue. One with layers and flaws. :)
ReplyDeletemisusedinnocence@aol.com
I actually love the more quiet heroines, who are really so strong but just don't know it. And knock the socks off their hero :-)
ReplyDeletejustforswag(AT)yahoo(DOT)com
My favourite heroine must be strong, smart, and doesn't take any bull. She can take care of herself and is confident. Men view her as an equal and not as one to be "taken care of" or "protected". She can do that well on her own because she kicks-butt!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway!

Like many others, I also like the strong, smart and kick-ass type heroines who can definitely hold her own. Most often found in Urban Fantasies and Paranormal Romances so I guess I would pretty much like most of the heroines in these genres.
ReplyDeletechibipooh(at)gmail(dot)com
What an awesome series. I have been trying to follow the tour and would love to read Tempted. My favorite heroine is a very strong, opinionated woman who will get in there and get the job done. She does not have to be kick-***, but must have fortitude and character; of course, if she can kick-*** all the better LOL Thank you for sharing with us today and for the awesome giveaway opportunity :)
ReplyDeletedz59001[at]gmail[dot]com
Sometimes I like kickass heroines and sometimes I like ordinary women who just rise to the occasion. The things I really dislike though are snarkiness for no real reason and continual TSTL behavior. I can take the occasional stupid moment, but if there's too much of that I just want to throw the book.

I like a Heroine with a little bit of arrogance, self confident and not afraid to tell it like it is!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for a chance,

I love heroines that can stand up for herself and not let the alpha male take too much charge. Does that make sense?

I love a feisty heroine meeting an alpha male. Makes sparks fly!
ReplyDeleteThis series is now on my TBR List.
Thanks for the giveaway!

I love heroines who are the type to take stand up to a man and let him know she's his equal but also can be his everything in love.
ReplyDeleteI have the first 2 books in the series cannot wait for the new one!
I like heroine's that learn about themselves as the book progresses. The things that they learn don't have to be (but, I have found, usually are) earth-shattering. They just have to be something that the character comes to realize about herself through either self-reflection (always my favorite - I know I hate people telling me what to think or why I think in a particular fashion) or through conversations with others.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite type of heroine is the independent and strong kind. The kickass ones. I hate damsels and dolts. If I see any evidence of simpering, I quit the book.
ReplyDeletebookslikebreathing(at)gmail(dot)com
I love a heroine that is independent but still has some room to learn!
