Please welcome Virna DePaul!
V-Day Is Me-Day.
Literally! Some of my friends call me “V” and it makes me feel loved! Growing up, I didn’t like my unusual name, and this was reinforced by kids at school calling me “VD,” Vern,” or “Fern”—not exactly names a teenage girl wants associated with herself. One day, I overheard a friend saying that “Virna,” just sounded like an “old lady” name. She was actually talking about her aunt, but her words still hurt —mainly because she was right. Whenever anyone tells me they know a “Virna,” the person they’re speaking of is usually a grandmother or great-aunt.
To go along with my name, I was a bit of a nerd. Shy. Quiet. Of course, I loved reading, but it took me a while to find myself. Even when I did, others still clung to their “idea” of who I was. The real me felt invisible.
Things changed, especially when I started writing. When I write and when I hang with writers, I feel authentic and life seems full of limitless possibilities.
By getting to know other writers and learning how to network, I’ve learned how powerful my voice can be—both written and spoken. Bonus: I got to choose a “cool” author name for my erotic romance titles. “Ava Meyers” sounds exotic and passionate and young. At least I think so. J
Thankfully, I’ve come to appreciate the uniqueness of my “real” name, too. I even put it on my first mass-market novel, Chosen By Blood, because while it might not project a certain image, it’s me, all mine. And I’m determined that when people pick up a “Virna DePaul” book, the LAST thing they’ll be thinking of is a nerd or grandmotherly type person (crossing fingers on that one!).
Two author names, but one writer: ME. Virna DePaul stories = suspenseful and sexy. Ava Meyers stories = blow the doors off HOT. Like variety? I hope so!
Today, Valentine’s Day, celebrate who you love, but also who you are on the outside and the inside. Each of us is as complex as the characters we read about, and that’s a beautiful thing.
Finally, here’s a little treat for you. It’s a sneak peek of Wild For Him— my new novella from the upcoming Set Up For Love anthology (Don’t miss the giveaway at the end of the excerpt!). The theme of the anthology, which also showcases stories by authors Susan Hatler and Delilah Sloan, is about finding Mr. Right…with a little help from friends.
Excerpt from Wild For Him:
Tam was right. Daniel Mays knew how to kiss. His lips were a study in contrast. Soft and firm. Tender and voracious. Cool and hot. She moaned as his tongue entered her mouth, teasing her own. Her entire being was suddenly awash in sensations.
Her heart beat faster.
Her skin grew hotter.
Her lips clung to his.
Her nipples hardened and she could feel herself getting wet.
She felt disoriented. And scared. She broke away from him in panic, struggling to catch her breath. “What are you doing here?” she finally asked, embarrassed by the husky alto of her voice.
Daniel’s own voice was raspy. “I offered to take you to your sister’s engagement dinner. Didn’t Tam tell you?”
Uh no. Embarrassment and anger washed through her. “She didn’t tell me she’d set me up with you. If I’d known...” She shook her head. “I mean…”
Daniel nodded. “You mean you would never have opened the door.” He cocked his head. “Why is that?”
“We work together.”
“So let’s date together.”
“No!” She almost yelled it, startling both of them. She trembled with panic, wanting to accept his invitation yet knowing how weak and pathetic that made her.
He frowned. “Bryn, there’s something between us. That kiss was amazing. I knew it would be. I knew you would be.” He stepped toward her, but she held up her hands.
“Daniel, stop. It’s not going to happen. Nothing is going to happen.”
Daniel closed his eyes, as if calling upon a higher power for strength. “All right,” he said after a moment.
He slowly walked toward Bryn, who backed up despite herself. He kept pace with her until she bumped into a wall. He then planted both of his palms above her head and leaned down, staring into her eyes. He was so close she could see that a gold band encircled his dark pupils. “I’ll go. But this isn’t over yet. Not by a long shot. Just one taste, Bryn, and you got me harder than any other woman. Think about how good it was. And how good it’s going to be. Because we’re just getting started.”
He dropped his heated gaze to her lips. She held her breath. Waiting, praying for him to kiss her. Instead, he pushed away, walked backwards to the front door, then turned and left the house.
Bryn slid down the wall until she was sitting on the floor. With her heart thumping heavily in her chest, she touched her lips with her fingers, closed her eyes, and, just as he’d commanded, thought of how good it had been.
Just one kiss and her body had ignited. Wanted more. Wanted him. Her starved senses had come alive. She’d felt the heat emanating from his body. Had smelled him, clean and spicy. Soap mixed with the heady strength of his cologne. She’d opened her mouth to him, but she’d wanted to do more. She’d wanted to touch him. Press her body into him. The wanting hadn’t surprised her, or particularly scared her.
What scared her was the intensity of her response. If she’d thought she could lie under Daniel and let him have her while she moaned softly, she might have given in to her body’s desire. But he brought out her wild side. Made her want to push him down and tear off his clothes. Made her want to throw caution to the wind, forget decorum and respectability, and squirm and writhe and howl and scream until she forgot everything, her past, her present, her future, and simply lost herself in him.
Just one kiss, and she’d been ready to throw away her better judgment.
That’s what had scared her.
It had given her the strength to back away when he’d tried to kiss her again.
And it would give her strength the next time.
Because she couldn’t forget what mattered. Justice was everything to her and Daniel’s job was all about impeding it. She couldn’t afford to lose control, and with Daniel, there’d be no other result….
**Thanks for reading! I’m giving away a free e-copy of the Set Up For Love Anthology PLUS an e-copy of my paranormal novella, A Vampire’s Salvation (which Laurie reviewed on this site, saying it “has danger, a hot alpha vampire and some hot sex”) to one random commenter!

Great post. It's true, we all grapple with our names at times, and it takes a lot of maturity to accept the cards we've been dealt. And luckily as authors, we're very fortunate: we can just make up the name we'd like to be known as. Or did anybody really think my name was Tina Folsom? :)
ReplyDeleteBTW, no need to enter me in the contest, I've already read both novellas.
ReplyDeleteHi Tina, thanks for stopping by! Yes, we writers get to correct all kinds of baggage through our imagination. Luckily, your real name isn't one of yours--it's beautiful! :)
ReplyDeleteokay, that little excerpt was tasty ;) I would love to try your books.
ReplyDeleteAren't names an interesting thing? People call me "Sue" sometimes and I'm like, "Who's Sue?" It's a legitimate nickname for Susan, but doesn't feel like me for some reason. Virna's is very unique...just like you, V! Love your books...can't wait til CHOSEN BY BLOOD is out. The cover is so gorgeous, I just want to pet it.
ReplyDeleteHi Virna!! *waves* Awesome post - I always got teased about my name (people would sing "My Bonnie lies over the ocean", which is so NOT a big deal but to a kid its a total bummer) also my maiden name was Brady, so I'd get all the Brady Bunch jokes. And then, my birthday is April 1st so of course I got all the pranks. Sheesh. So I feel your pain!!
ReplyDeleteHot excerpt!! Don't enter me in the contest =D And BTW I ADORE everything you've written!!
Loved the post! Been hearing so many good things about your books and I am adding both author names to my TBR list. Need to read both types of books! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks you so much for the Giveaway! When I read Laurie´s review I added your books to my TBR-pile ;-)
ReplyDeleteLea @ Reading Against All Odds
Sharon, so glad you liked it! I think we all needed to be reminded of our wild sides now and then! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Susan! You're definitely not a Sue to me, but I guess it's all what you're used to. That's the beauty of who we are--we're so many different things to different people. Can't wait for readers to get the antho and see how talented you are!!
Bonnie -- waving! So glad to see you here. Thanks for sharing your name troubles. If only we know then, right?
DarkBloodyVamp and RAAO, thanks so much for adding me to your TBR lists! I hope you enjoy my stories and look forward to hearing what you think!
LOL its amazing how they give you nicknames especially when the name isn't usually one that is like mine Donna what would that be ? My best friends call me either D or DD.

Well.... "I have an aunt Phyllis" or "My grandma's name is Phyllis". My name peaked in popularity in the 30's. And don't call me Phyl, please. (except my dad. He chose the name in the first place. Turns out he had a girlfriend named Phyllis before he met my mom. But then, he was born in the 30's....)
ReplyDeleteAnd some high school guys thought it was hysterical. Siphyllis. Yay.
I used to wish my name were Suzanne. Or Jennifer. Or something totally normal. But now I'm used to it, I guess. I still need a pen name, though...
Lovely, Virna. I think your name distinguishes you from other authors, and it's so nice to be "the one and only!" Keep up the great, tasty snacks and can't wait for more.
ReplyDeleteLove watching your awesome journey.
GREAT teaser. I want more! But it's the same with all the novellas Virna writes so I'm not surprised. Can't wait to read Chosen Blood in all its glory!
ReplyDeleteVirna, you are YOU, and *that's* what makes me proud to call you a friend. :)
Oh I love the fact that you have real experience in the crime field. How super exciting! I can't wait to read this book!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm also glad you used your real name-it IS all you, and it's awesome you're proud of it :)
Wow both of these look really good. Definitely want to read.
ReplyDeleteiqb99@yahoo.com
Both of those look like my kind of reading. Adding to my ever growing wish list :D
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I know what you mean about learning to love the name you were born with (Sondrae Bennett is a pen name). Three cheers to you and your novel! Sounds like a great read.
ReplyDeleteChosen by Blood looks awesome. I can't wait to get my hands on it!!
ReplyDeleteBLH Mistress: I love DD! It exudes affection! :)
ReplyDeletePhyllis: I've SO been there! I considered changing my name college, but decided against it. Good or bad, I AM a Virna. :) But pen names rock! Pick out something you love!!
Hi Sharon and Kristin, So cool to be sharing this time with you and getting to follow your successes, as well!
HighlandHussy, Thanks! I had so much fun creating the suspense and action scenes in Chosen--I hope you enjoy them!
Thanks so much for stopping by Danielle, Ilona, Sondrae, and EBF. I'm glad Chosen By Blood interests you!!
I can totally relate to you with your nick name, I have an old fasioned style family and everyone is either called bubba or sissy, even til this day I call my brothers who are grown by the name bubba and when their friends hear it they tease them at work. LOL
ReplyDeleteYour book sounds wonderful and am adding it to my wish list. I would love to win

I've had Chosen by Blood on my wishlist. So, I really want to read this one. Great guest post!

I love the excerpt. Thanks for the giveaway.

Stopping in to wish you ladies a very Happy Valentine!!!!!! Hugs!
ReplyDeleteLuckily for me, I really like my name. The only problem with it is that Jennifer has been a popular name for many years now so no matter where I'm working, there are always at least two or three people named Jennifer. At my current job, there are two of us in a dept of 10 people and we sit right next to each other, so it's a bit distracting.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed the excerpt, would love to try one of your books.

Good excerpt. My mom's cousin named her daughter Verna so you're not alone. I was named by my paternal grandmother. My mom was going to name me after her, Sophia, but she hated her name and told my mom that since I was going to be named after her she should be able to choose my name. And that's why I'm Sheila, a name I like.

I think everyone in Internet can understand the "name issue". Would I use my name or a nick? Same for you, writers, but bigger.
ReplyDeleteBTW, I love this kind of giveaways, because they are internationals :D

Ronda, Melissa, Stephanie, Cecile, Jen, Sheila, and Kasumi, Thank you for stopping by. Glad that many of you like your names (lucky, lucky! ;)) and that you like the sound of my books.
ReplyDeleteGood luck, everyone!
Thank you all that commented. The winner of the giveaway is Danielle Gorman! Congratulations, Danielle! I will email you your ebooks. I hope you enjoy them!
ReplyDeleteI have to say l like my name (Jodie) but l would hate it if l disliked it or thought it didn't suit me because it was for 'older' people.
ReplyDeleteI think it's great how people can just change their name and often l get caleld Jod and rarely get called Jodie. l have noticed lately how l call most of the people around me by nicknames!
Thank you for the giveaway and the post!
