Guest post and give away with Author Eleri Stone
Please welcome Author Eleri Stone!
Thanks for having me here today Laurie! My name is Eleri Stone and I’m a new author whose debut novel Mercy just released from Carina Press. I thought I’d tell you a bit about myself and how I went from being a paranormal romance fan to an author.
First off, I love paranormal romance. It’s a peanut butter and chocolate combination of my favorite genres – romance, fantasy and horror. In my early teens, I was a big fan of authors like Stephen King, Mercedes Lackey, David Eddings, Anne McAffrey and Lois Duncan. (Does anybody remember that book with the astral projecting evil twin? Loved that one.) My first urban fantasy about vampires was Fred Saberhagen’s An Old Friend of the Family from way back in the 80’s.
In my late teens I picked up my first romance - Whitney, my love by Judith McNaught. (I know a lot of people have trouble with the riding crop scene and the forced seduction in that one but I loved it then. I love it still.) Almost overnight, romance became my go to genre. Historical romances were my early favorite but then something miraculous happened… there was this explosion of paranormal romance in the bookstores. It was the coming together of everything I loved to read growing up in fantasy and horror, and everything I loved about romance as an adult. I was in heaven. Vampire lovers - I’m there. Fae – Yup. Shapeshifters of any variety – Yessss.
Right now my two favorite series to follow are Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson series and Karen Marie Moning’s Fever series.
So when I sat down to write my own story, I didn’t even stop to question what kind it would be. The only question was whether I would be able to finish it. You see, I’ve always loved to write. The problem is that while I’m really good about starting stories, I’m really bad about finishing them. I like beginnings and it seemed like I was always getting an idea, writing a chapter or two under that wild sweet thrill of inspiration and then one of the kids would get sick or I’d have to put in overtime. I’d put the story on the shelf for awhile and by the time I got back to it, the thrill was gone.
When my youngest started preschool last year, I decided I was going to use those two hours to write – ignore the laundry and the dishes and just try to finish one manuscript. That was Mercy – my own paranormal romance about jaguar shapeshifters living in the Amazon jungle. It has a touch of fantasy in that the Yaguara are a remote tribe of shapeshifters and I was able to build their society from scratch. It has an edge of horror in the brutality of that society - the hero and heroine meet in what should have been a battle to the death. And, of course, it has romance.
Here’s the blurb:
To the Yaguara, an ancient jaguar shape-shifting people living deep in the Amazon jungle, nothing matters more than strength. Iada is their champion; genetically pure, she has been trained since birth to fight. Her destiny is to become the next Queen of the Yaguara by winning the tournament of succession—a battle to the death.
Her opponent is Gabriel, a half-blooded outcast whose mother was human. To everyone's shock, he defeats Iada but does not strike the death blow—instead, he extends mercy, thereby claiming her as his mate.
Despite their enmity, the attraction between them is powerful, and soon they are mates in more than name only. Their mutual distrust serves only to fuel their passion—two champions bested only by their overpowering desire for each other.
But Gabriel has an agenda that threatens the most basic tenets of Yaguara society—and that will force Iada to choose between her people or her King.

I am in love with paranormal romance! School for the little ones is a great thing! I am glad that you finally got the chance to finish one of your novels!! Congrats to you on that!
ReplyDeleteMy Favorite Author right now is Lara Adrian her Midnight Breed series is amazing.
Thanx for giving us the chance at winning your book!
Hi Kristen! I like Lara Adrian too although I haven't caught up on that series yet. Maybe I should do that while I'm waiting for Jan when Shadowfever and the new Briggs comes out ; )
ReplyDeleteAnd good morning Laurie! Thanks for having me.
ReplyDeleteHi Eleri! Mercy sounds great! The fact that your using jaguars in the jungle is uncommon, and sounds fun! As for an author.. hmm.. where to start? I read across so many romance genres, it's hard to pick. But, I guess as far as PNR, I love Larissa Ione, Lara Adrian, Jeanine Frost, & JR Ward for the well known series authors, but I'm also having fun finding the new, upcoming authors and reading what they're coming up with! In fact, that seems like all I've been reading lately!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway opportunity!

Congrats Eleri on the completion of your book. That is a major accomplishment and it looks amazing. My favorite author is Sherrilyn Kenyon, but I also love many others. I agree that Shadowfever can't come out soon enough, but I find plenty of other books to fill in that down time. Thank you for the chance to win a copy of Mercy and I will be sure to add it to my to be read list immediately.
ReplyDeleteOh wow! Mercy sounds amazing!!! I can't wait to read it, since it's definitely going on my TBR list :D
ReplyDeleteMy favourite author is probably Cassandra Clare, I just love her stories. I don't think I'll ever get sick of them. And I'm looking forward to Nightshade by Andrea Cremer, it comes out later this month, and I'm so excited!!! :D
Thanks for sharing a copy of your book, and thanks for sharing your love of paranmormal romance! :D

forceofstars(at)yahoo(dot)dk
Hi,Tanya, Lacy, Ambur! Thanks : ) Love all those authors except I haven't read any Cassandra Clare yet. And really I have no good excuse. She's one of my daughter's favorite authors and she keeps telling me how good the Mortal Instruments series is. She's home sick today and I just said out loud "Oh, I wonder who Andrea Cremer is." And she says, "She wrote Nightshade - Comes out Oct 19th - Can't wait."
ReplyDeleteHi Debbie - I started reading Stephen King when I was 11/12 too. He was my father's favorite author, so I used to take them when he was done. (I blame "It" for my clown phobia.) I like his newer stuff too but I'll always have a soft spot for his earlier works.
ReplyDeleteMysteriousrose - Hi! Carina Press isn't supposed to have any international restrictions so it shouldn't be a problem at all : )
Wow, your book looks and sounds absolutely phenomenal! I would love to read, please count me in if this is international.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to Love in the Time of Dragons by Katie MacAlister because it looks and sounds crazy awesome!
k_anon[at]hotmail[dot]co[dot]uk
Wow!! Eleri I love Jaguar shapeshifters...yummy. That will explain why I love Pamela Palmer Feral Warriors. However it is whatever I'm in the mood for Lynsay Sands funny and light.....Lora Leigh erotic sex....Alyssa Day hunky water loving men. love to try your book
ReplyDeleteMercy sounds like a great read! I've been in a shape shifter mood lately, and so been looking for any books with such characters. So, I'll be sure to check this out. As for my favorite authors I'd have to go with Jeanine Frost, Lara Adrian, Patricia Briggs, and JR Ward. Oh and Stephen King as well. I've been reading his books since I was thirteen, and some of my all time favorite books were written by him. I started reading his books because I saw a few of my dad's books lying around, and they all just happened to be by Stephen King. He was and still is my dad's favorite author.
ReplyDeleteThanks for giving away a copy of your book!

ReplyDeleteGood morning Eleri, Thanks so much for being here, I hope you have fun!
ReplyDeleteHi Tina...Love that so many are saying that they're looking for shifter stories. I love shapeshifters (**obviously**) but I've heard a lot of reviewers saying that they're burned out on them lately, which makes me sad. Shifters and Weres are my favorite paranormal characters.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your book. Right now I am really interetsed in Ilona Andrews, Kerrelyn Sparks, Larissa Ione, Jeaniene Frost, Patricia Briggs, and a lot more paranormal romance and fantasy writers. I am like you in that I have been hooked on this series and your book looks like a great edition to the genre. Thanks for the giveaway.

Hi Eleri! Yeah, who says we can't have it all---fantasy AND romance! My favorite, favorite books when I was a kid were Mrs. Frisbee and the Rats of Nihm, the Hobbit, and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Then I grew into Jane Austen, and now the two come together...w/ a little heavy breathing thrown in. ;)

ReplyDeleteHi elaing8,Mom2anutball(love your name) and Sandra - sometimes it's hard to pick a favorite, isn't it?
Julie - I'm actually planning on reading that series too...my teenager loves them and they're all floating around the house somewhere.
As an avid reader, I don't think I could ever choose just one favorite book or author, but my favorite genre is urban fantasy/paranormal. And as a CRAZY CAT LADY, how could I not be looking forward to reading Eleri Stone's new were-jaguar book, Mercy????
ReplyDeleteHugs~

Right now I'm on a reading high after almost 3 years of no time to myself to read (have a 3 year old). I'm pretty much reading everything I can get my hands on from mysteries, sci-fi, romance to YA. Some of my favorite authors are Parnell Hall, Julie Garwood, Linda Howard, Tess Gerritsen, Rick Riordan, VC Andrews, F. Scott Fitzgerald, CS Lewis, L.M Montgomery...and many more. As you can see I run the gambit of authors and genres.

Hi Pink Panther and Atta Girl (It sounds like Crazy Cat Lady has truly excellent taste.)
ReplyDeleteMommywantstoread - I went through a spell after my second child was born where I hardly read anything for about a year which was extremely strange for me(I don't know if it was lack of sleep or time...whatever it was thank goodness I eventually snapped out of it.)
Thanks jeepdiva : )
Jolene! I hadn't heard of Enemy Lover so I had to look it up and then I had to buy it (the blurb sounded so good).
