Monica's Bio
An award-winning author of erotic romance, Monica Burns penned her first short romance story at the age of nine when she selected the pseudonym she uses today. From the days when she hid her stories from her sisters to her first completed full-length manuscript, she always believed in her dream despite rejections and setbacks. A workaholic wife and mother, Monica believes it’s possible for the good guy to win if they work hard enough
Hi everyone, I’m excited to be back here at Bitten by Paranormal Romance. I love talking books and what goes into them. So thanks for having me back to talk about my upcoming release Assassin’s Heart, the second book in my Order of the Sicari series.
Paranormal. It’s still the hottest thing on the market right now. We love it, can’t get enough of it. And when my agent asked me to write a paranormal series, my first reaction was, OMG, I can’t write paranormal. I don’t know how to write vampires, werewolves or shifters. I only know history.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’m a HUGE fan of paranormals. Feehan, Ward, Angela Knight, Showalter and many others are a hard act to follow when you try to write something different for the genre. My favorite shows are Warehouse 13, Medium and GhostWhisperer (both cancelled – Grrr) and Sanctuary. I am a diehard fan of all things paranormal, but when you’re a writer of historicals, it’s hard to switch bats in the middle of the game. So when I developed my Sicari heroes, the first thing that came out of my fingers was…you guessed it, historical content. It was five pages of a Roman general and his wife having an intimate moment. Just for kicks, here a small portion of what I wrote.
He watched her. From the open doorway of the small spa, he studied the voluptuous curves of her body as she stepped out of the marble bath. A slave tried to cloak her in a pristine white cloth, but with an elegant wave of her hand, she took the towel and sent the servant away. Tendrils of hair the color of a midnight sky escaped the makeshift knot on the top of her head to caress the nape of her neck.
Outside the final heat of the day had eased, leaving Rome cool. But in here, his body burned hotter than Apollo’s chariot blazing its way into the west. Marble cooled his shoulder as he leaned against the hard column of the bath’s entrance. The stone’s chilly smoothness did nothing to quench the fire in his blood or stop his cock from growing hard at the sight of her.
Arms folded across his chest, he drank in the beauty of her full curves. The olive bronze of her skin shimmered beneath the layer of water skimming down her back before it danced off her softly rounded buttocks. The lushness of her body shot a familiar ache through him. Cassiopeia, daughter of Manius Quinctilia Atellus, Roman senator, was his.
There had always been women in his life, but the idea of leaving a wife behind if he died in battle wasn’t a worry he’d been willing to accept. Of course, that was before she chose him. What had made her choose him over all others? He was a soldier. A plebian by birth. Far removed from the patrician clan she belonged too. It was doubtful he would ever know the reason why, he could only thank the gods that she had chosen him.
His gaze greedily swept over her, his body reacting as it always did whenever he was near her. He suppressed a sudden growl of desire as she bent over to pat her legs dry with the linen towel. The view from this angle was more than enticing—it was erotic. He remained where he was. He had no desire to rush tonight. If he did do so, she’d know he would be gone at dawn.
When I wrote that scene, I already had the rough background of my heroes fleshed out, and I didn’t have a clue as to why that scene just popped into my head. But as a writer, I’ve come to trust my instincts, so I tucked that scene away until last year when I was beginning to flesh out Lysander’s story. I had planned on flash back scenes in the book to explain how the Sicari had come into being, but I really wasn’t sure how to do it. Then I remembered my Roman General and his wife, and before I knew it, I was pulling all the pieces together into a past life story.
When I think about my qualms writing a paranormal, I didn’t realize I already knew how to write paranormals. I just didn’t realize that the paranormals I write are of the other worldly kind. One of the best things about being a writer is to write about things you know, and past lives are something I know a fair amount about. Primarily because I’ve had past life regression done, and I’ve discovered that I’ve lived at least three lives. None of them rich and fancy, in fact I was dirt poor in two of them. And in those two I lost my life by hanging and beheading. Suffice it to say, it explains a lot when I tell you that I’ve NEVER been able to wear turtlenecks, chokers of any typed of clothing too close to my neck.
With Lysander and Phaedra, I set up certain issues they had to deal with that tied back directly to their past lives in ancient Rome. Primarily because the whole concept of past lives is that you return to get a second chance. You come back to make up for what you did wrong and you come back to get it right. For Lysander and Phaedra, they get it right the second time around and as a result they get the HEA they only briefly had in the past.
So what about you? Do you think you’ve lived before? If so, what kind of life do you think you had? We will get back to this question for the give away.
Assassin's Heart by Monica Burns
Book 2 in The Order of the Sicari series
Berkley Sensation
ISBN - 978-0-425-23652-9

Coming September 2010
The truth of the soul.
Lysander Condellarie never understood why he had telepathic and telekinetic powers until the night his Praetorian father tortured him and left him for dead. Now, the half-angelic, half-demonic face he sees in the mirror is a reminder of the monster he must keep hidden or face expulsion from the order of assassins know as the Sicari. But his dreams of Ancient Rome hint at a destiny he finds hard to accept, especially when it involves the woman he loves, but can never have.
The consequences of desire.
A gifted healer in the Order, Phaedra DeLuca witnessed her mother’s murder when she was just a little girl. The haunting memory makes her loathe everything Praetorian. When she travels to Rome in search of an ancient artifact, she must work alongside a man who once cruelly rejected her love and healing touch. But her dreams of Ancient Rome tell of an irreversible and possibly dangerous future. For the distant past and present are about to collide--with the one man she is destined to love.

Here is her question again.
So what about you? Do you think you’ve lived before? If so, what kind of life do you think you had?
I'm nothing special, so I don't really think I lived before. But if I did then it would probably was a mundane life that had nothing too special happen. Sounds boring, but *shrug* that's the truth.
ReplyDeletelydiahenry25@yahoo.com
I do believe in reincarnation, so yeah, I believe in a previous life. The question isn't did I live, but what did I live as? I could have been a bird, dog , or monkey for all I know...But, truth be told, I must have pissed someone off...because I am often saying, "What did I do in a previous life to piss someone off, that I am to be puhished in this one"...Don't know where I got it...but I do say it. :P
ReplyDeleteladyrogue(at)ymail(dot)com
Lydia, please don't ever say you're nothing special. EVERYONE has something special to offer the world, unfortunately others might not see it. I'm betting you say and do things that you might not even realize have impact. As for a mundane life, yep, the three lives I experienced were fairly mundane. Thanks for posting, and big warm, fuzzy hugs!
ReplyDeleteLori, I think returning is because we're trying to get it right this time. I know I've failed miserably again. LOL
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I'm just not sure whether I've lived before or not, although I do like the idea and vastly prefer reincarnation to the only other explanation I might buy of what happens when we die (we just go *poof* - bye bye). However, if I had lived before, I'd say I was a warrior of some sort ... a knight, or a ninja, or someone like that ... I always feel as though there just isn't enough adventure to my life, like I should be out doing epic deeds of some sort, lol. I'm a girl, but I don't think I necessarily have to have been a girl in a past life, so - yeah - a warrior :)
ReplyDeletebella-on-toast@hotmail.com
I doubt I've lived before. My current life isn't anything all that in the grand scheme of things so I don't think I would have been around in other times either.
ReplyDeletejuliecookies(at)gmail.com
no I don't think I have lived before . I can't even say I have ever felt that da javu thing I hear people talking about
ReplyDeletemeandi09@yahoo.com
I'm not sure if I have lived before, but I definitely like the idea of having a second chance to get everything right. Unfortunately I think this time around I have screwed up royally. I also have the feeling of having done something before or having been somewhere before even though I haven't. It's one of those things that is fun to think about, but at the same time a little scary.
ReplyDeletelb3553@gmial.com
I'm sure i lived before and that i was some type Egyptian! I love everything about Egyptian History, i guess that's why I'm studying Archaeology :)
ReplyDeleteIs this international by the way?
If so chidoryx AT hotmail DOT com
I think I've lived before. I think in the second world war. All my life I have been having nightmares about German soldier following me on the streets to shoot me. I always wake up in time though.
ReplyDeletelucybeugelingramos@gmail.com
I do sometimes get the feeling that I have lived a past life. I am not sure what kind of life I would have lived. I follow on GFC
ReplyDeletelizzi0915 at aol dot com
I definitely believe that I have lived before. I have a strong fear of fire and was once told by a psychic that I had died in a fire. Hmmm....it would make sense. Now I just wonder if I were tied to a stake when it happened, lol! ;)
ReplyDeleteThank you for the wonderful giveaway!

I loved the impact of the book trailer, just amazing.I have to say yes, I believe I've lived before. I also can't wear turtlenecks, tight chokers or have anyone touch the back or side of my neck. My kids tease me and say I was probably hung or burned at the stake for being a witch. But I think I lived in Scotland for the desire of everything Scottish has been a fascination of mine from a child.Go figure. :)But I know I haven't gotten it right, once again. lol I am definitely looking forward to starting this series.

I do believe in reincarnation, and like Monica siad, I too got it wrong yet again. lol. My belief is that you are placed back into life, when you're reborn, according to how you were in your previous life. So if you were a big biyatch to people in your one life your butt is going to get knocked down a few notches in your new life. lol. I don't know why I believe this, maybe I read it somewhere?
ReplyDeleteI don't know who or what I was in my past live[s] but I keep getting Scottland on the brain. There's just something about the Highlands, and I haven't even been there, that draws me to it... as well as Victorian England. I always tell my family that I was born in the wrong era and want to go back. I'm serious, I really want to. LOL.
And I agree with Carol L. that book trailer was awesome!

I really don't think I've lived a past life. If I have I really doubt I'd have been anyone important. Everyone always claims to be a celebrity, LOL. I was probably a chambermaid!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great giveaway! I've been eying this series for a while. What can I say, the cover caught my eye. :)
catherine.n.morgan(at)gmail(dot)com
I think so.. sometimes some things just feel... like you know. It is strange to sense that, but it happens every once in a while. I think to remind us... hey... you are not alone here.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great giveaway and the awesome post Ms. Burns!!!
alliwantandmorebooks@ gmail.com
Yes, I have always believed in reincarnation if that's what you're talking about ;D And I believe that I was a wolf in a past life because of my great love towards them..... I love nothing more than wolves and I'm so desperate to work them with.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this awesome contest.... I've been wanting to get Monica's book but haven't had the time or the money. And thanks for asking this question, I love answering questions like this :)
erfaulkner91(at)yahoo(dot)com
I don't believe I've lived before...But if I was to have a prior life I hope and pray it would be more exciting then the life I have now. My life isn't horrible, but housewife and mom can be boring and unexciting at times!
ReplyDeletejacindahinten @ gmail . com
My dad has always called me "an old soul," so while I don't have that feeling of having lived a past life, apparently my dad thinks I did :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun question.
I wish I had lived through the Regency..all the balls, and gowns.
Laurie, great giveaway and interview

Bella - I'm certain I fought in wars in the past, one of my regressions revealed a life as a knight. Wonder if my Sicari are a cathartic expression of my dislike of violence in the present. :)
ReplyDeleteJulie - Most people who have regressions done by therapists rarely if ever were anyone famous. I think even Shirley McLaine's past life experiences were relatively non-descript people.
Jennifer - Sometimes not knowing something is a GOOD thing. I hate my deja vue sometimes, particularly when it's a bab vibe. I knew the Fri B4 my dad died that someone was going to die. I just didn't know it would be him. It was a major shock, & I felt guilty because I didn't call him.
Lacy - Getting a second chance to wipe the slate clean is a huge relief I think. I liken it to getting a new job. And yes the thought of it can be a little scary.
Lu - I love Egypt too as well as archaeology.
Lucy - That's a horrible type of nightmare. I feel for you. I've always had a terrible connection to that time period. The only thing is that I think I was on the German side. Now some of that could be based in my German/Italian heritage. But I broke into tears outside of the concentration camp, Auschwitz and couldn't go in. Even the Holocaust museum in Wash DC upset me so bad, I can't tell you how distraught I was. So I can really empathize whether I lived in that era or not, it was a terrible time.
Bethie - Feelins are akin to gut reactions, and I've always gone with my gut in things I'm uncertain of.
EJ - My experience says that fears follow us from life to the next. The fear is generally connected with an experience. I can't stand to have anything around my neck, but that would be a go figure when I was hung in one life and beheaded in another. *shiver*
Carol, I LOVE, LOVE my trailer for this book. I picked out all the pics and the music was worth every penny I paid for it. My designer is fabulous in how she put it all together for me. Kerri did a FANTASTIC job!
Jessica, Thanks for the kudos on the book trailer. I hope it hooks readers into at least picking up the book. I'm convinced that I lived in the mid-late 1800s. England, America, don't know. Possibly the Egyptian connection comes there, but I don't think so. But it's definitely fascinating stuff isn't it.
Cecile - Yep, we're never alone! And redos are nice to believe in. Thanks for the kudos on the post. Glad you enjoyed it.
Luvsdemon - Glad you enjoyed the question. And yes reincarnation and past lives are one in the same. :)
Jacmom - housewife and mom might seem boring, but imagine yourself running for your life with someone chasing you and you're trying to protect your child. I'll take boring over that image anyday, which is why books are so wonderful. They can take you to scary places, yet you know you're safe. *grin*
ReplyDeleteHighlandHussy - I LOVE that term. Old soul, I've a friend who I know is an Old soul. She's got this incredible aura about her, when I'm in her presence, it's soooo peaceful. Glad you liked the question and post.
I believe in reincarnation,I believe the soul has to go somewhere so yes I do believe I lived pass lives. As who or what I'd love to know.
ReplyDeleteelaing8(at)netscape(dot)net
Sabrina, Glad you enjoyed the post. Sometimes the knowing isn't all it's cracked up to be. LOL
ReplyDeleteElaing8 - Yep, that old science prinicple that energy never dies, it merely changes form.
I've been told I've lived many lives. I was usually some sort of spiritual person for my people. Funny. I always thought I'd be the comic relief or jester instead. ;)
ReplyDeletebooks (dot) things (at) yahoo (dot) com
I don't really think that I've lived before, but I do believe in reincarnation. I believe that a restless soul or a soul that has not finished it's business here on earth can enter another body (human or animal). I once had an encounter with a bulldog that was mesmerized with me. He looked at me like a human would. He wouldn't move, and his owner laughed; but literally had to pull him away when the dog didn't want to leave. I have never had an animal look at me, directly in the eyes, with such recognition ever before in my life. I do believe that dog was someone I had known prior. Your book sounds great.
ReplyDeletelrjv329@yahoo.com
I've never really thought about the idea of reincarnation but I think it's possible since everything is possible in the world. And I think I would've have been studious but adventurous.
ReplyDeletelilazncutie1215[at]yahoo[dot]com
Melissa - Spiritual can also be comical relief too. LOL Some Buddist monks have humor that is awesome!! LOL
ReplyDeleteVixhen - How cool that the bulldog seemed to know you. I've not had that happen to me before.
Jeanette - I'm rather adventureous myself. Done a lot of cool things most people will never do. Riding on top of an elevator is one! LOL
You rode on top of an elevator Monica? How did you manage that?
ReplyDeleteCatherine, I used to work for an elevator company. They installed them in area buildings. I rode one in the Henrico Doctor's Hospital. It was scary and yet totally cool. They dropped the elevator into the well below the first floor, you got on top of the roof, and then they made it go up. We went up three floors on that roof. I don't want to do it again, but it was really neat.
ReplyDeleteArtemis, Thanks for the comment about the video. I LOVE it!!
Seriously!? Hanging and beheading. Wow, If I ever found out about past lives, I would not need to know how I bit it :)
ReplyDeleterobin [at] intensewhisper [dot] com
Someone once told me they knew me in a past life. Alas, I can't say I remember any of it. So what kind of life did I have? Well, according to the guy who knew me, I was his mistress. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great giveaway!
reenajacobs[@]reenajacobs[.]com
While I like to read about them, I think they make a great story. I dont actually believe in past lives.
ReplyDeletebacchus76 at myself dot com
Yes, sometimes I have these bits of "wisdom knowledge", feeling that I have already had to make this decision a long time ago, or that something similar has happened to me. I once went to a holistic masseuse who told me that she could see at least 3 scenes of my past lives, in one I was the mistress and intellectual partner of a powerful Roman politician, and in the other I lived in Scotland and had strong bonds to the land and its history. She told me that after I came back from a trip to Scotland, and I didn't had a difficult time to believe her, as I really felt a connection to Scotland when I was there.
ReplyDeleteI would like to experience a deep hynosis and visit a past life!
Thank you for the great giveaway Monica!
stella.exlibris (at) gmail (dot) com
Thanks Monica for being here and thinks everyone who entered!
ReplyDeleteRobin, I didn't experience either of the two deaths. I simply came out of the regression knowing what happened. I mean it was pretty evident what was going to happen when I was in that cart on the way to guillotine. The therapist pulled me out when I became distraught. I think it's possible that reexperiencing such a trauma could quite possible cause death in this life, simply because of the shock. And a regression usually makes one understand quirks and traits you have in this life.
ReplyDeleteReena, interesting. As a mistress. Wonder if there was a I'm married, but love you scenario going on there? That sort of thing happened all the time in the past.
DonnaS - Believing isn't for everyone. :)
Stella - I think its amazing how others can tune in to the things we try to keep buried, whether past lives or just current problems we have in the here and now.
Everyone - Thanks to Laurie for having me here, and a big thank you to all who came here to chat and share their beliefs--pro and con. It's all about what makes you comfortable. :)
I don't believe in past lives but it is an interesting subject :)

I don't think I've lived before. Even though sometimes I feel I'm wise beyond my years, I have more experience in wishing I knew more about life.

I belive we are all multidimensinal beings, living multiple various parallel realities. Regressions and hypnotherapy give you insight to who you are. Pay attention to your dreams and dejavu or things that pop into your head. I believe you have a Roman connectiong Monica. I look forward to reading your intuitive channeled story.
