May's topic/discussion post

Our topic/discussion for the month of May is: Compare between Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy which one do you like best and why?

The biggest reason I like PNR over UF is at the end there is the happy ever after, so there is no guess work (I hate guess work;)in who is she going to be with next time or will they still even be alive. Then there is the sex yep I have to have it;) and most UF either doesnt have sex in them or there is a little, I really dont mind a little just as long as the rest of the book has quite a bit of action. My favorite PNR series is Dark-Hunters by Sherillyn Kenyon

I really like the darker side to the UF. Plus you get more of women in action roles. My favorite so far is by Diana Rowland, Kara Gillian series

My thing is I hate to try UF because I find they do have one guy they the next book they have another guy or at least the ones I've tried. If you are huge UF fan and know of books that they are with the same partner through out the whole series and would like to let me know, please do. I would love to read them.

So whats you take on this? Do you like PNR better then UR or the other way around or do like both the about the same?

Do you have a favorite PNR series? Do you have a favorite UF series?

  1. I prefer paranormal romance because I want the happily ever after too. However, my favorite series is the Southern Vampires/Sookie Stackhouse books, and those are definitely not PR. I guessed I like to read mainly PR with a UF from time to time.

I, too, am not a fan of heroines who have a new guy in each book. On the other hand, I can see that it's a realistic scenario for the heroines of Urban Fantasy.

Meanwhile, I can think of some authors of Paranormal Romance who concoct the most outrageous reasons for their leads to mate for life. (I used to find it really hot, but I guess I've had too much of the same formula.)

I think it would be great to have a happy medium, with two people staying together forever not because they're fated to or biologically hardwired to, but because they want to. =)

  3. I can't say I'm a fan of multiple partners in a series. However, I do not mind urban fantasy / non-HEA books, either involving the same 2 people, or throwing a 3rd in for a triangle conflict (like Rachel Vincent's Shifter series), because it really makes you want to read the next book! Obviously, I prefer the series to end HEA. Having just read Lover Mine by J.R. Ward, I do love paranormal romance / an HEA just as much. So, I guess I like both genres equally. :)

  4. PNR and UF are both favorites to read for of course very different reasons. Like everyone else read PNR for the HEA and read UF for the action and if reading a series by an author that writes both genres than I am in heaven...

  5. I much prefer UF over PNR ... Night Huntress is one I LOVE, where the main character, Cat, only has one partner throughout ... and it's not boring because of that, BELIEVE me, HOT!!! I think I often find PNR to be a little contrived ... they all seem to have the same plot, with different character names ... I've never really got into BDB, for example, and I know loads of people love it and other similar series. I think with UF, you never know what you're going to get ... the different stories always manage to take me by surprise, so reading loads of UF doesn't get monotonous at all, whereas PNR has a bit of a formula.

  6. Confession: I'm new to both genres. My best friend and I challenged each other to read (and review) 100 books in 2010 - and part of the challenge is that we have to move outside of our genre comfort zone. I am SO glad we made that rule. I'd be hard pressed to tell you which is which, but I know I like many authors people have suggested above. I like the sex, but if the story is good enough, I *can* look past it. Not all sex is well written and that's worse than no sex (in books...) I'm thankful both genres seem to be doing well in the marketplace :-)

  7. I read a little of both - but after reading Para for so long - I am still rolling around in the UF genre..

It's fast, it's pacey and the characters just keep coming out of the woodwork...

There is no "little women" in UF as well, the mildest, calmest chic is most often the most vicious killer... Love that...

I will admit that I have to filter in some Para between UF because I still miss that old world charm that those heroes bring to the genre...

    Cool topic..

  8. Here Here for HEA!!

I will say I have to agree with Enbrethiliel I am gettin tired of the same go around. I dont know If I should try a different genre or what I even swap to erotic and they are the same. I want a happy medium too!!!

I read book one of Night Huntress I do like it but I just wish there was more romance not just sex just a better conection between Cat and Bone's I hope to find that in book two.

  9. I'm on book 2 of the Night Huntress series right now and yes Laurie there is a better connection in this book between Cat & Bones, I'm really enjoying this one.
I like both PN & UF, luv my HEA's, but I like my UF's with some romance in them like the Southern Vampire series, the Night Huntress series and the Mercy Thompson books, I need the romance to keep me interested.
