You’ve all heard the old adage about the chicken and the
egg. Did the chicken lay the egg, or did the egg come first, and the chicken
came out of the egg?
In writing science fiction, there’s a similar question to
ponder. Did humans – people from Earth, Terrans; we – settle the universe, or
was the universe already settled before we came on the scene?
Call me ego-centric, but I like the idea that we settle the universe. Therefore, in my books, that’s the way it is. Humans went out from Old Earth about a thousand years ago, and settled the part of the universe where the books take place.
There’s the planet of Fontaine, a downtrodden and not very
wealthy place, where you can still find an old-fashioned revolver if you know
where to look, and where the best gambler in the universe was born and died.
There’s the peaceful colony of New Jericho, and the planet
of El Kedar, where the Kedarii warrior women live.
There’s Avaris, the pleasure planet: a human construct where
you can find every vice known to man, plus a few we probably haven’t thought of
yet.
There’s the Republic of Rhene, where a very militant group called the Rhenians live.
And there’s the planet of Marica, which the Rhenians have
occupied, and are currently in the process of trying to subdue. The Maricans,
needless to say, aren’t happy about being taken over by someone else, and are
fighting back.
It’s business as usual, in other words. People wanting what
they don’t have, and people trying to hold on to what they’ve got. Not to
mention people getting caught in the middle and landing themselves in the
prison colony on the moon Marica-3, and then having to figure out a way to
escape.
It’s a big world out there. And getting bigger all the time.
