High kicking
through the Regency Era
I’ve always
been a history geek. I remember telling
my parents when I was a kid that I wanted to be an archeologist and a Rockette
when I grew up…at the same time. I would
dig to find pieces of ancient civilizations by day and high kick with my red
lipstick on by night. Life hasn’t quite
turned out the way I envisioned it at age 5.
But I am excited that I get to write historical romance. And, I get to do it while wearing red
lipstick if I want to. (Kick line not
included.)
I became
interested in writing after years of being an avid reader. What books were my favorites you ask? Historical romance, of course! More specifically, I devoured anything with
the back of a lady’s ball gown on the cover.
*wistful sighs* Due to my attraction to colorful dresses that twirl I
read mostly in the Regency Era. I fell
in love with the escape these stories provide in a location close to my heart—England!
When it was
time to choose a place to set my stories I couldn’t think of a better place to
submerge myself on a daily basis than England’s Regency Era. I mean, who wouldn’t want to live in an early
1800s world? …A fictional world, that
is. Every day, I get to enjoy the
setting, entertainment and fashion of the Regency Era while in front of my
laptop, in my air conditioned house, after having used my hair dryer. It’s the life! *grins*
While most
of my stories take place in London, HOW TO LOSE A LORD IN 10 DAYS OR LESS is
set in a place I adore, the North Yorkshire Moors. I spent time there years ago,
and it’s easy to get lost in the history of such a beautiful area. Katie Moore lives in the old gamekeeper’s
cottage on her family’s estate at the base of Roseberry Topping. Today, it’s an area for hiking and mountain
biking. In 1818, however, things were
quite different.
Andy and
Katie’s story is focused around their mutual fondness for horses. Although Katie is terrified of the animals after
her riding accident a year ago. Nonetheless she is forced to help heal Andy’s
horse after he crashes into her life, and becomes stranded on her
property. Horses are a big part of any
historical setting. The romanticism of
carriage rides and the need to be seen at the right time in the park are some
of my favorite parts of writing in the Regency Era.
My number
one favorite part? The fashion!
The empire
waist, capped sleeve gowns of this period are as forgiving as they are
lovely. Of course, you won’t see many gowns
like these in HOW TO LOSE A LORD IN 10 DAYS OR LESS. In fact, when Katie discards her breeches in
favor of a dress, mayhem is sure to follow.
I hope you
enjoy the 3rd book in the Tricks of the Ton series. Between an uptight lord and an unconventional
lady it’s a wild ride on horseback through my favorite period in history, and
in my favorite setting.
