Please welcome author Alexia Reed!
Growing up, I was a fairly late bloomer where romance was concerned. I
loved reading but I read mostly suspense and horror—Dean Koontz, Stephen King,
etc. I quickly knew I didn’t like books where there wasn’t a satisfying ending.
My first accidental romance was Tami Hoag’s Cry Wolf. I still remember
the day I got it. I was in Coles and was looking at books to get, my arms full
of like five or so. My mom was helping me look and she picked out a book with a
black and white cover, I guess thinking the title was interesting. Her words
were something like, ‘This is about a serial killer. How about this?’. I
paraphrase because I’m not entirely sure but it was something along those
lines. I’d been reading more thrillers by that point. I decided to try the book
out and it definitely wasn’t what I was expecting.
It was…quite shocking! There was kissing and…ahem…sex.
You have to realize, to this point, I had never read a book with
intimate scenes before, but the moment I read that book I knew I wasn’t going
back to a bleak world of no emotion in books. Yes, for years, I did mostly read
only the romantic suspense kind, but I was hooked. Here was a genre I could get
behind. One where a happily ever after was guaranteed. Not just that, but
character-driven stories. It wasn’t just the warm fluttery feelings of the
romance on page, it was the connection the reader got with the characters
themselves. With romance books, you get to know more than a character’s
motivations. You know their fears and dreams intimately. It’s like suddenly
they’re your best friend, that one person you know everything about.
There’s a coziness there that you don’t get with some of the other
genres.
What was your first romance book? Do you remember? What do you like
about it?

My first romance book was probably a Bette Neel book since I was allowed to buy Harlequin books; then it was a Julie Garwood historical romance which I loved, loved, loved....And I still love her books.
ReplyDeleteI actually have the first 3 romances I read. Two are Harlequin Romances from 1975 and one is 1977. I was in Jr. High when I read them. Country of the Vine by Mary Wibberly, The Voice in the Thunder by Elizabeth Hunter, and Hawk in a Blue Sky by Charlotte Lamb. I still read them once in a while just for old times sake. Did I give away my age on this one?!?! LOL!!!
ReplyDeleteI think it was a Johanna Lindsey book. I remember that it was very enjoyable.

My first romance book was a Catherine Coulter book. I mistook one of her historical romance books for a fantasy book. It was a little bit of a shock to me at first but then I found I liked it. I've been hooked ever since.

This book sounds really good. I think my first real romance book was Shanna by Kathleen Woodiwiss. I really enjoyed it and from there on I had to check out all other types of romance mainly paranormal but also historical and contemporary. Thanks for the chance to win.

It's been a long time since my first romance book, & the romance was probably very mild - it was either something by Barbara Cartland or the Cherry Ames Nurse series.

Thanks for the great post and giveaway! I've had this book on my radar for a while now. Been reading such great buzz about it and I love the premise (I've always loved superhero/x-men types).
ReplyDeleteMy first romance was For the Roses by Julie Garwood, I was 16 and they made a Hallmark movie version of it. It has the movie cover on it so it didn't look like a romance and I bought it and was able to get it past my uber religious mother. Boy was I surprised!
You know I can't remember my first romance...I've just read too many I guess...but, I'm sure it was probably a Harlequin. This books sounds VERY exciting and...thx for the giveaway op!

Oh wow, I am not sure of the title, but I think it was Sookie Stackhouse book1, so a paranormal romance.
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds great! Thanks for the giveaway!

The first romance book I remember is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. So far, it's my favorite of all times. I like it because the feelings of the characters are so pure, but they won't let the other one know.
